Minimalist Pop from Phoria

phoriaIf you went out last night and have to work all day Friday, you’re likely in need of some recovery music to get you through the day. Phoria, a  Brighton quintet, has crafted these really subdued pieces of pop music, featuring whispering vocals and minute electronic details throughout.  It’s a pretty stark musical landscape that they’ve created, but I’m finding myself absorbed with each repeated play.  You’ll be able to find this tune on the band’s Display EP, which is seeing an international release on June 16th via X Novo. Should be a nice little listening trip.

New Tune from Home School

homeschoolFeel like it has been awhile since I harped on the great work being done by the folks over at Art is Hard Records, continuing with their always interesting approach to releasing music.  As part of their Postcard Series, the label has just gotten out a new tune from Home School.  Here, you’ll hear music sitting in the background, with the vocals taking the main focus here.  I like the relaxed feel of the approach, not to mention I’m a huge sucker for twanging/jangling guitar parts these days….every day now that I think about it.  Think you’re going to dig this tune for real.

You Like the Smiths? You’ll like Ancient Times

tumblr_mjrohl6lAc1rbayaao1_500This new tune from Ancient Times has been making its way around the indie pop blogs as of late, and I’m really enjoying it…meaning it’s sharing time.  Immediately you’ll notice the vocals taking on that Morrissey croon, but the more I listen, the more I see that the music is a bit different.  There’s not that sheen to the guitar, though you can see a bit of a jagged edge in the playing.  While the Moz is out hating on everything with meat, you can happily visit with Ancient Times today to get you through.  I suggest jamming here, then heading off to the Soundcloud page for an extended taste.

New Sludge Rock From Theo Verney

2941472308-1We just got sent this short and sweet new sludge rock tune called “Dead N Bones” from Brighton, UK based outfit Theo Verney.  Now Theo tells us that all of his recordings were done completely on his own with full responsibility of instruments falling on his shoulders.  I don’t know about you, but I always find that pretty damn impressive.  So the song we have for you definitely falls into what I like to call the sludge rock category with the darkness of Black Angels and guitars similar to The White Stripes.  It creates this really great moment of rock n roll, though it only lasts a minute and a half.  If you’re into it like me, check out a few more tunes by Theo over on his bandcamp page.

Rad Rocker from Bird Skulls

I’ve played this song on repeat at least ten times, and I can’t help but be transported back to my adolescence, fueled by angst and hooks.  In two minutes, one of the UKs hottest acts, Bird Skulls, blasts through with distorted guitars at breakneck speed.  It’s a bit of grunge, but a bit of punk rock, so in essence, it’s sort of like everything we all loved about the late 80s/early 90s.  You can get your hands on their new single cassette from the kind folks over at Art is Hard Records, and they’ll throw in a nice little winter hat to make your life warmer.  I’m glad people still make music like this.
