New Banger From Brontez Purnell Trio

Brontez Purnell is a guy who is hard to pin down artistically as he traverses all types of musical genres along with both dancing and writing. His latest comes by way of his trio of sorts featuring this new single “If You Can’t Help Me” which takes an old gospel standard and gives it a garage pop twist. The bass on this one is a particular stand out with some heavy distortion and an almost nasty vibe to it ala TV on the Radio. I am sure you will dig it below.

This track is a B-side to a new single release featuring “Forgive Me, Phillip” on the flip.

Brontez Purnell Trio Shares Forgive Me Philip Video

Brontez Purnell has been at it a really long time, whether we’re talking about his solo work, his old Young Lovers stuff or, today, the Brontez Purnell Trio. He’s been on Sub Pop, written several books, and definitely is an artist that should be revered, so let’s crank up this fresh single form his new project with Matty Fasano and Josephine Network. Personally, I loved the snappiness of the tune, instantly infectious as the snare pops along with the sharp cuts from the guitar work. Brontez has a distinct delivery, but the sun shines on the tune once the whole group joins in to sing through the chorus. When the suns out, Brontez is going to bring the fun out…and it’s out in full below.

New Videos from Upset the Rhythm: Brontez Purnell and Screensaver

I’ve made no secret of my adoration for all things hitting from Upset the Rhythm; they seem to be locked into my coverage, and today they’ve got two brand new videos that I felt were worthy of sharing. The first cut is the new single from Brontez Purnell; he’s a Berkley based artist laying down playful pop punk songs that sound like they were made by your best friend in his garage (I mean that in a good way!). The label releases Confirmed Bachelor on November 10th. On the other video, you get the video version of Screensaver‘s latest, “Future Trash,” which I covered a few weeks back. This is a dark wave goth hit; you’ll find it on their Decent Shapes LP, dropping this Friday!

Last Week’s Jams (7.31 – 8.4)

I really thought we knocked it out of the park last week, covering 25 different tunes. But, it looks like we decided to one-up ourselves and post 26 for this week’s Last Week’s Jams collection. We got some of our favorite labels and bands putting out fresh new stuff, like new Tony Jay on Slumberland and new Onyon on Trouble in Mind. Plus, our friends at Keeled Scales are putting out a new LP with one of my favorite Texas songwriters, Will Johnson. All that and we haven’t even talked about how great that new Smashing Times single is. As much as it can be a challenge to cover it all, feel like we did our damndest to bring you some of the more deserving hits you might not find where the cool kids hang out.

Brontez Purnell Announces Confirmed Bachelor

Fresh on the heels of the excellent Jaboukie 7″, Brontez Purnell is ready to return with a new full length LP, Confirmed Bachelor. With that, you get a fresh single, introducing Brontez new solo stuff, and man, I just love the way this song unfolds. It kicks off with these huge riffs ringing around Purnell’s voice. The drums snap in quickly, and the track quickly begins to have this playful bounce to it, but mid-track, there’s a pause and then this striking swirl of guitars feeding back through your speakers, shattering the pop structure just a bit as the tune filters towards a stomping close. Twist and turns and hooks and noise; this tune has it all. Look for Confirmed Bachelor via Upset the Rhythm on September 15th.
