Last Week’s Jams (9.9 – 9.13)

Seemed like a strange week for some reason, but there were some definitely tunes that just broke my heart, in the best way possible. I continue to be impressed by Merce Lemon‘s new stuff, and “Crow” was just a beast. Porridge Radio, too, offered up a song that just wanted to shatter spirits, though if that’s the case, I won’t mind one bit. Alas, there was some pop in the week, like the new record from Young Scum and new single from Jim Nothing. Plus, old favorites the New Tigers are back, as is Germany’s Roller Derby. Indulge yourselves by pressing play below, but be sure to start with the powerhouse hit from The Wickies.

Cactus Lee Shares Sister Video

Cactus Lee may not be a household name yet, but after a fairly prolific couple of years, it looks like everyone’s starting to take notice. He’s got a slew of dates on the horizon from AmericanaFest, Flying Island Festival and Tomorrow Never Knows, all big indicators of the draw of his magical brand of country. And, since its been a minute, perhaps this brand new single is a hint that there might be more coming our very way just around the corner. I love how the track, and its Super 8 film footage, certainly feels like a dusty Summer day in Texas, yet you can hear the soulfulness in the voice, something that beckons you sing together with a bunch of your best buds. Please keep your eyes on the prize, that is, Cactus Lee.

Music for Listeners Announce 25th Anniversary Shows

If you ever make it to Austin during the SXSW season, you’ve likely been to a set or played a set at the wonderful Music for Listeners day parties. Michael and Orlando have exceptional taste, quite closely aligned to our own, and they work really hard throughout the year to promote their favorite new and old music on their radio show based out of San Antonio; you can stream a lot of their sets HERE. First, congrats to the two of them for 25 years of rocking their radio show; that’s just a magnificent feat in any arena. Second, they’ve announced two really great 25th anniversary shows, one which will feature Voxtrot playing a set of their original 3 EPS, with Blushing and Buttercup opening. The second set will have a more country leaning attitude with Cactus Lee, Native Harrow and Sentimental Family Band taking over. First show is September 14th at Laurie Auditorium and second is on October 5th at Lonesome Rose. And why not celebrate by sharing a new video from Voxtrot! Congrats Michael and Orlando!
