Brand Spanking New Deardarkhead

deardarkheadYou should already be aware of Deardarkhead, the long-running act of warm noise makers (Captured Tracks) even threw out a retrospective a few years back). They’ve been going strong for the last several years, despite nixing their long-time singer and moving forward as an instrumental act. Oddly, they haven’t seemed to miss a beat, if anything growing stronger as a unit. On this brand new single, I’m a huge fan of the rhythm section, particularly the bass chords that seem to bubble up beneath cascading distorted guitars. There’s movement within the song too, which isn’t always present in instrumental pieces, changing tones and power behind the mix. Their new album Strange Weather will be filled with tunes both startling and soothing; it will be released by the super reliable (and Texas based!) Saint Marie Records on March 25th.

B Boys Share No-Nonsense Rocker

B BoysB Boys are a three pieceon the verge of releasing their debut EP,No Worry No Mind and their sound is exciting and rambunctious rock and roll. They’ve shared a new single from this debut called, “Get a Grip,” and it’s definitely going to embed itself deep in your brain as you go through the rest of your day. You are welcomed to the song by tight knit guitar riffs and lo-fi vocals. The drums are shimmery and cymbal heavy, while those electric guitar riffs simply don’t quit, their cutting sound slicing through the mix over and over again. You’ll definitely want to keep your ears open and listening for updates from B Boys, especially that debut EP out March 18th via Captured Tracks.

Are You Stoked For Wild Nothing’s Life of Pause Yet?

11958077_970211316378664_2723550751892443815_o-2No? Really? It seems almost impossible that you could have missed out on the excellent singles that Jack Tatum’s Wild Nothing has been doling out over the past few months in anticipation ofLife of Pause, but if you’ve been under a rock or something, you’re in luck. Today, we’ve got yet another single from the upcoming record with its title track, which you should immediately press play on below. This song is perhaps the single most resonant of Wild Nothing’s past collection of synth drenched pop tracks, and it’s every bit as good. Pulsing synths really drive this song, and the mellow beat grounds it in a danceable rhythm. All that’s left for you to do is preorderLife of Pausehere and wait a little while longer for the February 19th release date viaBella Union.

softmoonFriday night one of our favorite bands will be gracing the stage for a nice set, and I couldn’t think of a better sound system to handle the wall of beautiful noise that The Soft Moon will bring to the table. Two New Wild Nothing Tracks?!?!

Credit_Daniel_McMahon2The boys are back! I’m beyond excited to announce that Wild Nothing have a new album on the way called Life of Pause, which is due out shortly via Captured Tracks. After their spectacular previous release, Nocturne, it seems that this band is still moving upwards and onwards with their sound; these two new tracks still showcase that lush dream pop, but with more hints of synths laced into the sound. While I like both of the new tunes, I think the second track, “TV Queen” strikes closer along the lines of what we’ve heard before from the band.  Take a listen to the tracks below and rejoice that there is yet more new music to come from Wild Nothing.

More New DIIV Music

DIIV

If anyone is judging by soundcloud plays, and you shouldn’t, then this new DIIV record already has a lot of excitement behind, having reached over 10K streams in less than 24 hours. Personally, I was excited by their newer songs at this past Levitation Fest…more so than I was by their earlier work. This new track definitely has my interest piqued further, using a lot of great guitar work to fill out the space behind Cole’s voice. For my two cents, it’s one of the strongest things they’ve done; it’s got a really dark feeling to it, furthered by the way the vocals calmly hang in the air. Their new album, Is the Is Are Now will be released by Captured Tracks on February 5th.

Fresh DIIV Track

diiveThis tune’s all over the place, and judging by the response (and their huge show at Mohawk this past weekend) DIIV are still drawing popularity and excitement. Aside from the song, which I think fulfills my expectations from their set at Psych Fest last Spring, I’m stoked to hear that the band has 17 new songs to offer listeners. They had a solid first effort, but I felt it was a little bit short. This means fans will get twice the release when Is the Is Are hits the streets on February 5th of next year. Look for it to come via Captured Tracks, which is always reliable in my eyes.

EZTV Cover Chris Knox

EZTZ-Calling-OutI’m not typically one to discuss cover tunes, but seeing as this song involves two of my favorites, Chris Knox and EZTV, I feel like it’s justified. EZTV is one of the various acts that really caught me this year, and they definitely do justice to one of Knox’s most popularized tracks. It’s all in honor to celebrate that Captured Tracks (the label of EZTV) will be reissuing Knox’s catalog, including some of his work with Tall Dwarfs. I guess the best thing about a cover is that it encourages you go back and dig through your records, or it opens doors for new listeners. Either way, you can’t go wrong listening to this track, or to either of the band’s (people) involved.

Show Review: Mac Demarco @ Stubbs (10.20)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetExpectations were quite high for Tuesday night at Stubbs. Riding high off the release of Another One, Mac Demarco and company came to a sold out venue to share the new tunes as well as jam out some of the old. Playing to quite the young crowd, though one who has probably seen the band in some capacity—over the past year, Mac has played not only one, but two of Austin’s festivals. For those who have seen Demarco’s live act, the night was quite predictable, but nevertheless enjoyable. Read on for my full recap.

Sweet! New DIIV Tune

DIIV

DIIV

A few years ago, DIIV was all the rage on the Internet, but when their album came out, I’ll admit I wasn’t blown away…as much as people expected me to be. But, I had a lot of hope for the band going forward, especially after they put on an incredible set at Levitation Fest this past year. Lucky for us, their new single fulfills on the live sets promise. It holds onto the slightly jangling post rock atmosphere, while driving home a pop-centric vocal that’s perfectly fitting. The date of their confusingly titled Is The Is Are has yet to be announced, but rest assured, it’s coming soon via Captured Tracks.
