Last Week’s Jams (2.5 – 2.9)

We had a windows down car drive end to the week, so here we are looking at all the hits we covered in the last week. There were a few jams like the new single from Gentleman Jesse or the Pheromoans latest that aren’t anywhere on DPS, but we’ve got tons of other jams from the week. I really loved the new bops from Johnnie Carwash, Icarus Phoenixand Flowertown, while Ray snuck in some new Mini Trees and Acid Tongue. Plus, we tried to suggest you take listens to new LPs from Itasca, David Nance, Dead Bandit and Pylon Reenactment Society, so if anything, sample a tune here and there from the new records. Another Rad Careen Single

When we covered Careen‘s first single, I was definitely feeling a bit of Sonic Youth fandom in their craftsmanship, and while that’s still there, this single below seems to emit darker notes, nearing an almost industrial nature. I’m all about the song’s journey too, as it seems to kind of work back in forth between various worlds, seamlessly in spots and completely different segments in others. When it begins, the guitars are fast and pushing the pace; there’s still a beautified edge to it though, like a J Mascis fan covering a Hum record. As it progresses, the dominating doom of the tune begins to take over, though there definitely is some flirtation with the more indie-centric nature. All of it culminates in this crashing end that feels like it belongs in the outer circles of 90s metal and what we lazily referred to as doom. It’s a cool mixture, and something that leaves the band feeling refreshing in the long run. Cycle 3 drops on February 23rd.

While it may have only been a four day week in terms of work, we made sure we made the best of it for you, bringing you a slew of hot indie rock bangers. Slumberland had a great week, dropping new music from Umbrellas, and introducing us to Torrey too! We were stoked to share a new video from the BVs as well, flipping their style a bit to tease you with what’s in store going forward. Some Texas love for Infinites and Alien Eyelid was a must, with an added bonus being that our friends in Pale Lights dropped a compilation of rarities and singles on Friday. Careen Share Last Winter Video

Even after running this site for nearly 15 years now, there’s still just so much music to discover that you’ve got rely upon friends to keep you in the loop now and then. For me, that’s how I heard about Careen, when a friend sent an email encouraging us to listen to this new EP; the email name-checked Unwound, among others, so having just recently seen them, I was like yeah, lets do this! My two cents to offer is that the tune works in two phases; a traditional underground fare then a bit of sonic exploration. I gravitated towards the immediacy of the first phase, as the vocalist in the verses sounds like classic Thurston, up until the emphatic vocal bursts tear through speakers. That back side toys with the same sonic territory, but it’s employing space and limited vocal bits to let the tune completely evolve into its own realm. Cool jams, so look for Cycle 3 on February 23rd via Death Metal Florida.
