Charm School Announce Skadenfreude Ploy

While I love Charm School‘s work, the title of their brand new EP had me momentarily worried; would Skadenfreude Ploy be a rocking take on ska? Well, one listen below and you’ll realize the group mean business; they’re going to develop smashing post-punk buoyed by noise and, yes, horns. This tune incorporates a thundering blast from the get go, and theres a seeming sax squawk running through the background that builds up the noise structure. Andrew Charm has this disaffected growl on the vocals; it’s akin to like-minded acts, though the lyrical provides the anger that drives the song forward. The new EP is out February 20th via Surprise Mind.

Charm School Slow Jam On Without a Doubt

Imagine if Interpol weren’t so pretentious, choosing to revel in the pop side of their craft rather than push for some overly-emotive brand of post-punk. If you’ve got that sound in your mind, you’ve got the feel of the newest Charm School single, dwelling in the ethereal slowness the genre offers. At times, it seems like a bold croon, allowing the vocals to creep around behind the guitars, and in doing so, you get to kind of spin yourself about, twirling about with the crisp ring before it erupts into cacophony. Steadied and bold, this track hits the right spots; look for Debt Forever on January 24th via Surprise Mind.

Charm School Share Happines is a Warm Sun

It’s hard to believe that we’re already looking at next year’s new releases, but one of the things I’ve got penciled in for cranking up is the next LP from Charm School. There’s something about it that reminds me of Dry Cleaning, particularly in the way they tether themselves to a central groove, then ride it out in a punky fashion. Unlike a lot of their peers, this groove rocks for a solid 7 plus minutes, taking that energy and consistently churning it over and over whilst delivering the vocals in a rock-steady fashion. Their new LP, Debt Forever, is out on January 24th.

Brand New Music from Halfsour

Halfsour caught our attention when they had a release with our friends over at Jigsaw Records, and they just unleashed another couple of tunes from their forthcoming Charm School. I like how these two tracks show the two sides of the story of this band, offering one with the male front and the other featuring a female front. In that story, you get a rambunctious semi-TV Personalities feel, while the latter brings out a more pop-punk centric jam. These new jams will be featured on the new release from Disposable America and Too Far Gone Records on October 14th…this should be on your list.
