Summer keeps on rolling right along like the hellfire that is Texas, and the song’s just keep hitting that sweet spot. Had some old acts make a return this past week with Devendra Banhart and Sigur Ros making the cut, but also excited to see old ATH Records act Being Dead with their banging new single. Along the way we had some hits from Night Beats, Dippers, Kindsight and Sonny & the Sunsets…to name but a few of the bands we can’t seem to stop covering on our end. A good little 20 song collection for you to kick off your day here!

Ciel Share So Scared Single

Ciel have quietly been winning fans over the last several years, and we’d gladly consider ourselves among those admiring the group’s work. Today, there’s a fresh new single out from the group, offering a glimpse at their forthcoming Make It Better EP. They’ve lessened the waves of guitar noise that they first brought to our ears, focusing instead on the blossoming pop rock undercurrents that have forever existed. You can hear similarities to acts like Metric, bringing in these strong vocal lines walking a fine line between spoken and sung. When the chorus hits there’s a cascading guitar cutting in, with a more emphatic punch to those vocals hitting. Their new EP will be out on July 7th.

Lots of coverage running around last week, and with ACL in town, there was some coverage of shows and what not. We ended the week throwing up some streams of our favorite LPs that dropped too. But, ultimately, you came here for the tunes, and we had lots of them. Personally, I loved new stuff from I Was a King, Heather Trost and Field School, not to mention the little twist in expectations thrown in by the latest from Smashing Times. Friday Album Streams: Alvvays, The Mall, Peel Dream Magazine and More

Well, Friday is here, and that’s a great reason to check in on some cool releases. Plus, get the bonus of knowing its Bandcamp Friday, so you get a chance to support your favorite artists and labels by streaming and jamming and buying! The Alvvays record has been buzzing everywhere, including our site, so we had to include that one. I’m personally stoked to hear how all the new Peel Dream Magazine songs fit together, as it seems like a different sound coming our way…we’re in for an exciting plot twist. There’s a couple other small releases here that we figured might fly under the radar, so wanted to be sure to include a bit of the other goods too! If we’re missing something cool, holler at us so we can be sure to give it a listen.

Happy Monday! Man, we covered a ton of ground last week, and I’m super stoked with the songs we squeezed into this playlist…and for the first time all of them are available on one streaming platform. That either means my tastes have gotten super basic, or those DSPs have taken over! Either way, there were a bunch of songs to love last week. I’m smitten with this new track from Kindsight, and I can’t stop playing that Cozy Slippers tune, so that’s a fun place for you to start. We get bonuses as members of Math and Physics Clubs have created two new bands, both with great new singles: Field School and Model Shop. Just a bunch of great jams to get your morning off on the right track.

The bobbing and weaving that immediately opens this tune sets of the new Ciel single as a certain banger; it has this heaviness that’s perfect for opening up the group’s new Not in the Sun, Nor in the Dark EP. Michelle’s vocals through the verses are sort of crystalline, reminding me at times of Clementine of Cherry Glazer; it sets up the chorus to unleash a heavier punch that really claws at your speakers in an attempt to deliver a melodic punch of noise to your ears. They’ll drop their new EP via Jazz Life on October 7th, and I reckon they’ll head right back into the study to write more sweet jams like this one.

We packed as much sweet music as we could into four days, especially considering one of us was down with the ‘Rona…and on vacation no less. Still, there was so much great new music that it was hard to stay away, from brand new Lande Hekt and Alvvays to the release of that latest Flowertown LP. Personally, I was glad to see Northern Portrait back on the menu, with a new album slated for a Fall release. Sit back, start you week, and enjoy a replay of what we got into last week!

Ciel Deliver Another Ripper

Brighton based outfit CIEL picked up some steam in the Spring of this year with a new single and vague details of a new EP on the horizon. Today we have more concrete details of the new EP, Not in the Sun, Nor in the Dark, with an accompanying new single to boot. I think you’ll find “Baby Don’t You Know” features this hazy, dream pop, almost shoegaze inspiration but with a downright sick grit and edge that you simply don’t find often in the genre. You will love it.

New EP Not in the Sun, Nor in the Dark will drop on October 7th via Jazz Life.

Weirdly, I felt like I didn’t cover too much last week, but apparently we got in at least 15 new songs, plus a few extras. I’m getting pickier in my old age, but mostly just figure you read Stereogum first, so no need to cover what they’re covering in their Premature Ejaculation column. I started out this week’s playlist with a cover from Screaming Females, but bookend it with the OG from The Selecter, cuz why the fuck not. Our friends Humdrum had a new hit, and that glorious Papercuts LP finally dropped in. It’s Monday, and there’s jams…I’m just over here listening to the first wave British ska.

CIEL Share Fine Everything

CIEL share their new track this week, and with that, they’ve announced a new EP on the horizon…but if you’re listening closely, you’ll also notice a more direct punch to their sound. This track doesn’t feel shrouded in that borderline territory between post-punk and dream pop; it’s a straight ahead ripper, albeit one punctuated by this incredible rhythmic pulse that helps cast the song’s hook deep inside your brain. They’re still hitting you with a nice bit of noise, but they’re not shying away from tying it in with melody and classic pop sensibility. This is our first taste, but already we’re thirsting for more from the Brighton bunch.
