The Serfs Announce Limited EU 7″

Last year’s Half Eaten by Dogs was a ridiculously solid effort from Cincinnati’s The Serfs; it warranted a brilliant tour through the EU throughout this November, and with that, the group are offering up a limited 7″ for their tour, with a few copies available in the States. “Paid in Full” is the A-side, and honestly, it reminds me of a more accessible version of The Knife; it’s got that same synthetic sound, but there’s something that feels friendly and like it’s perfectly built to soundtrack some futuristic show on Apple TV. But, just because they pull off a perfect club hit, doesn’t mean they can’t tether that to a more traditional rock ethos, like they do on the B-side, “Regen.” I love the descending guitar lines that run through this track, with the vocals matching that movement. This 7″ is out November 8th via Trouble In Mind, who of late have been on the forefront of the great melting pot between dance and indie rock (see Dummy, Naked Roommate, the Serfs, etc). EU tour dates can be found on the group’s Bandcamp Page.

Choncy Share Default Single

Seems like the musical hotbed at the moment is based in the Cincinnati area, or maybe just Ohio as a whole. Another act that’s joining up with Serfs as some of my favorite tunes coming out at the moment is Choncy. When you press play, you’re immediately met by this frantic groove, pushing you into the track before it angrily begins to sputter out of control. Straddling and jittery, the track rolls and pushes in a maniacal fashion, sputtering to this enthusiastic end. Something about this tune feels like its humanity coming face to face with our own technological demise; it feels like it incorporates all the tricks of the modern musical trade, yet does so with a bit of a playful wink to keep us all on our toes. This tune features on their forthcoming LP, which we can expect early next year via Feel It Records.

Another Ditty from The Golden Boys

The Golden Boys will be releasing Better Than Good Times this Friday via 12XU, and just to be sure you’re tuned in, they’ve dropped one last single before the record hits the stores. Perhaps the best compliment you can pay the band on this run is that they don’t fit neatly into some niche genre. Instead, they employ solid rock n’ roll foundations, filling in the space with a rolling electronic organ and a traditional verse/chorus/jam/chorus structure; it’s the execution and the natural hook that brings your ear closer to the speakers as slight toe tapping occurs beneath your desk. The band will be hitting up End of an Ear Friday, with a larger release party the following night at Barracuda.

Premiere: Frontier Folk Nebraska

The boys in Cincinnati band Frontier Folk Nebraska have long been on our radar over the years with their unique take on the Americana genre. As fans of the band, we are always pumped to be asked to premiere new tunes never yet heard elsewhere. Well today I have been given the great pleasure of premiering this hella catchy new song called “Destructive Man” here on ATH. The song brings to mind Chuck Ragan if he wrote sweeping, driving, and chant worthy songs like The Boss. True Delight.

Frontier Folk Nebraska will release new album War Pigthis Friday, March 24th on Old Flame Records.
