I meant to run this on Friday, but as I hope our friend Geoff in Club Coma understands, that dad life gets in the way sometimes. This Austin outfit is, like many of late, fusing club vibes and rock n’ roll, and they do so with this powerful brand of rock n’ roll, particularly if you catch the group in the live set (like we did at our SXSW party last night). They pull in a bit more of an R&B meets pop in their recording, then drive those rock riffs through the roof when they hit the stage. It’s not an act looking for a crossover, just a handful of great musicians fusing their love of genres into this huge musical delight. Try a sample.

Last Week’s Jams (7.8 – 7.12)

After a brief vacation, I apparently over-indulged while RayRay was out on the town, hitting up nearly 30+ songs, and some of those, like the premiere we ran for legendary Refrigerator, aren’t even on streaming platforms, so you have to go find em’ on the site! Austin had a big week, with acts like Club Coma, Liz Burrito, Voxtrot, Font and Letting Up Despite Great Faults throwing out some new jams. But, don’t think San Francisco/Oakland were game for being overshadowed, with Tony Jay, Sad Eyed Beatniks, Chime School, Fake Fruit and Parallel all dropping new jams. So, this is nearly 2 hours of really really great music, so sit back, press play, and escape the madness, albeit for a brief moment.

Club Coma Shares Changing the Rules

Our friends in Austin’s Club Coma haven’t stopped crafting music following their self-titled LP from last year; they’ve continued to take their approach to deconstructive pop even further. On this fresh single, they work for over a minute taking these appeasing elements of modern pop and twisting them into a blend of twisted noise and metal, setting the tone for the synthetic groove to drop right in underneath as they drive their pop sensibility into the listener’s ears. They’ll blend both elements of noise and pop into the single as it continues, continuing to see them taking apart pop music and building it up in their own image. And, if you’re in the ATX, they celebrate the single’s release tonight at Cheer Up Charlies with TC Superstar and more!
