About Last Night – SXSW (Saturday-Tuesday)

As you may have heard, SXSW kicked off this past weekend with some great local shows, especially our lil shindig over at Hotel Vegas with SOTO. Things continued into the early part of the week with most of us venturing out all over town to catch some bands before Austin gets truly wild closer to next weekend. We some bands, we took some photos, and as always, we have things to say. After the jump, you can check out some of our band highlights so far, along with fancy photos from our crew. Hit it.

Check Out Coldwave’s Italia 06

We’re already looking forward to the SXSW lineup, particularly as they’ve listened, relatively, to some of the noise surrounding their sponsorships (though the artist pay bump could still be higher). But, one of the main things I love, and I know a shit ton of folks who over look this benefit, is that it allows bands to apply for grants from their governments to come perform in our country…and Coldwave is one of the group’s just announced for a trip to our shores. The Australian band reminds me a lot of Shame, though they’ve got a larger group building in the texture, as you’ll see from this live video they recorded for “Italia ’06.”

Last Week’s Jams (9.23 – 9.27)

We’re drawing towards the end of the year, and while that means arbitrary musical lists of things, what it also means is that we’ve got a few more records hanging out to enjoy before the year is up. Personally, there were some great new songs from trauma ray, EggS and the Wickies, which indicated that these acts have a lot of promise to deliver. Best Bets dropped their latest LP, which was on our radar, not to mention the new release from Being Dead and Feeling Figures. Loved the introduction to Coldwave, and it never hurts to wrap up the end of the week with new music from Constant Follower!

Coldwave Shares Double AA-Side

I’m still here! At times I have been known to write about music and today the music oversharer in me had to drop this double AA-side release from Australian based upstarts Coldwave. A video for the track “The Ants” can be found below which has a very post-punk focus with some lovely horns to give it a sort of edgy meets Beirut vibe. For further listening, also check out the lengthier, and more contemplative track called “Italia ’06.” Both have something different and unique to offer and should get the band on your radar for good.
