More from Bry Webb

Bry Webb pixel singing Barna NemethiI’m a little bummed that Bry Webb isn’t making his way through the US any time soon on his upcoming tour dates…though maybe he’ll make it my way with some of those Constantines dates.  However, I’ve really enjoyed listening to his recent record, Free Will.  It’s infinitely slower than his previous workings and in some ways, has the mark of other folk troubadours like Callahan or Beam.  If you’re looking for a slow-paced gem of a tune, then spend some time with Bry today.

Singer-Songwriter Ditty from Bry Webb

bryThis tune arrived in my mailbox with an endorsement from Feist; whether you agree or not, that’s a ringing endorsement for any musician.  But, even more importantly, Bry Webb was one of the men fronting Constantines, one of my favorite Canadian acts.  Interestingly, I didn’t expect him to come off as a more spirited version of Bill Callahan, but that’s exactly what I’m feeling here.  Is new record, Free Will, is going to be issued by Idee Fixe Records on May 20th.  Listening to this has made my day better, like a gem hiding among my SXSW emails. Give this a thorough listen folks.

Constantines @ Emos – 6/6

iwasakingOut of all the shows this week, this is definitely the one I have been looking forward to the most. Whether it be the post-punk of Constantines, the crazy antics of Crystal Antlers or the tunes of my favorite new band I Was a King (pictured at left), it’s destined to be a night that my ears won’t soon forget. Sure, there are other greats gracing Austin this Saturday like The Strange Boys, Oh No Oh My or Au Revoir Simone, but this is the show you definitely need to be at. Buy your tickets.
