Thanks Light Drop Costa Rica Video

As we were in the midst of the Summer season here in Texas, fellow Austinites Thanks Light dropped the charming little “Costa Rica” single, which we gladly covered for its beachy, sun-drenched joy. Now, as the weather locks us into the cold, and as we crave those beach vibes, the group have crafted a fun little video to celebrate the dream to “bring Costa Rica to me.” If you missed the tune the first go round, this gives you a chance to bask in the natural warmth, then give a special shoutout to the band’s own Zane Ruttenberg who animated the video. Get warm!

Adios Cometa Release Luminosa

Lankford and I have always had a special place in our DNA for Costa Rica as both of us spent a ton of time there in our younger years. While I am sure both of us would agree, most the music in the country leaned toward a certain style most of the time, so it’s refreshing to pick up on this noisy, reverb laden Costa Rican band Adios Cometa. The quintet released a critically acclaimed LP last year entitled Nuestras Manos Son Incendios and continue the steady output with this new track “Luminosa.” I love how this thing kicks in super heavy from the get go and doesn’t try to mess about. The screaming near the end is a nice touch too.

Adios Cometa will release this track as part of a new album called Un Destello de Luz which is available for pre-order now via Steadfast Records.

Thanks Light Share Costa Rica

If ever a song was justified as existing on this site, it would absolutely have to be the latest track from Austin’s Thanks Light. You see, both RayRay and I have spent time in Costa Rica, myself having lived there for some time, so the thematic reference of the happiness of that country definitely feel like they hit home. They’re offered in a playful style, sort of like a Texas version of “pura vida,” with twanging guitars being bent and stretched beneath a summery heat whilst elegant keys give the track a little more proverbial meat. Just a gentle sway in the breeze, like sitting beachside and sleeping in a hammock, “way down in Costa Rica.”

Bright New Tune From Lentamente

We were first introduced to Costa Rican Ario Rojas and his musical known as Lentamente right around this time last year with the release of his debut LP Galeria de Espejos Paralelos on Z Tapes. Now a year later, Rojas continues to pump out new material every few months or so and continues to impress with his bedroom/dream indie pop approach to songwriting. His latest, “Panorama in 3D”, evokes many of those same super dreamy, bright and playful feelings from some of his earlier work, but also shows a musician who has learned to really tighten up production and mature into his craft. It’s a lovely piece of songwriting.

New Tune from Lentamente

I’ve really been enjoying the stuff I’ve heard from the forthcoming Lentamente LP; its kind of all over the place in the best way possible. There’s this sort of inherent bounce you’d find in a number of post-punk bands, but it still kind of has this bedroom feel that comes from the vocals, giving it that sort of DIY street cred…plus it never hurts to shine a light on one of ATH’s favorite companies. It’s tough to describe, throwing in all the jangles and all the feels, but still being perfect enough to really satiate your pop tastebuds. Give it a listen, and if you dig, there’s a cassette release of Galeria de Espejos Paralelos on October 19th via Z Tapes.

Cibeles Shares New Single, Ave de Corral

Y’all know that in separate periods, both RayRay and I have lived in Costa Rica, right? And you know I love a good pop song with Spanish lyrics, and today, I give you both with this new tune from Cibeles. It’s one of those unassuming songs that kind of creeps under your skin, seeming to have this wayward meandering about it; if I were crafting the video I’d likely focus on one protagonist wandering about on solitude. The vocals wash against your soul, like waves tickling your feet near the ocean, toying with your soul; I love the backing notes that add texture after the two minute park too. Just a nice way to let your mind float off into Monday.
