My first introduction to DUMB was when Eric Bill and I were working on Slack Capital; it was a compilation filled with 19 incredible songs (don’t forget Slack Cap 3 this year where Bad Boy Croy pops up), but nothing felt more like Austin than “I Don’t Wanna Die on I-35.” Lately Corey Baum has been focusing on his other project Croy and the Boys, but just this week DUMB popped back up with this great track and video. I love how the song seems to incorporate both sides of Corey’s songwriting, bringing in a bit of twang to a classic power pop aesthetic, always sure to instill a solid hook to boot! Plus, it never hurts to have a sense of humor, and I’m only wishing this song was true!

Today we’re spotlighting a song by Croy and the Boys called “Sleeping Til 2.” Saturated with their characteristic dry humor and a nothing-to-do Sunday morning vibe, this song perfectly encapsulates the modern malaise of a simple man trying to figure stuff out. “I tried some new drugs/ and they were fun/ But six-packs, and my backyard’s/ the budget I’m on,” sings bandleader Corey Baums, and the key is his earnestness, which makes it funny, rather than corny. Croy and the Boys may be in on the joke, but the characters in their songs aren’t, and that makes all the difference.

Premiere: Croy and the Boys Celebrate Album w/ New Single

It’s been a long time coming for Corey Baum and his posse, aka Croy and the Boys. Finally, their new album is ready for the masses, and it sounds as great as we’ve all expected it would. Their brand new single holds true to the Texas country tradition, but they’ve textured the track to make it more than just a run of the mill piece; there are layered guitars and a walking bit of keys. Honestly, it sounds like a cross between Wilco and Lucero, with hints of the Texan attitude Baum has inherited since moving to our state. The band have titled the album, Hey Come Back, and they’re celebrating it’s release over at Hotel Vegas this Saturday.
