FT5: Indie Rock African Americans

This is a serious subject, and one I don’t plan to take very lightly. As I’ve attended several shows recently, even small local ones, I began to look at the racial dynamic in the Austin music scene. Oddly, one giant sore thumb sticks out: the lack of African-American attendees at these shows. This is probably the same way in every city across the land, and I tend to think it’s quite unfortunate. I’m not here to debate how to solve the problem, if you deem this a problem, but rather to honor my Top Five African-American participants in the realm of indie rock. This is just my opinion, but I immediately banned the guy from Bloc Party because he put out two bad records and continues to make bad electronica music.

Crystal Antlers has long been one of those rare bands we like on record and have always enjoyed in the live setting. Trust us and make your way to the inside stage at Mohawk on Thursday night for a set by this Cali band. Opening support is provided by hyped local boys Harlem and Audacity. Should be good time.

FT50: Songs of 2009

We have to start this list off with a disclaimer. We have three writers, all with different tastes, so the list should reflect that a little bit. Also, these are our opinions, and by no means, are they meant to be seen as an “end all be all” to the question of what were the best songs of 2009. That being said, we like our list quite a bit. Sure, it’s got some expected numbers at the top, but the rest of the list is genius. We’ve got some of the songs streaming for you, and the rest take you straight to youtube. We hope all of you stayed dry on Sunday at the Fun Fun Fun Festival and we also hope you soaked in the great weather of Saturday. All in all we had a great time over the weekend and saw tons of great bands. Just as we did with ACL, we’d like to give you a brief recap with our top 10 favorite bands from the weekend festivities. As the week full of shows drew to a close, I had one more highlight that awaited me; The Constantines. Admittedly, I was more interested in seeing openers I Was A King than the headliners, but this was mostly due to my recent love of the Norwegian band’s self-titled album, rather than animosity towards The Cons.

Free Sampler From Urban Outfitters

Hip clothing company Urban Outfitters are offering up a free 23 song sampler filled with some of the best acts from this year. Crazy good track listing features singles and previously unreleased material from Phoenix, Delta Spirit, Grizzly Bear, St. Vincent and tons more great artists. You can stream the sampler online or you can download it from the itunes store. Here’s one of the tracks from the sampler by Crystal Antlers called “Andrew”.

Constantines @ Emos – 6/6

Out of all the shows this week, this is definitely the one I have been looking forward to the most. Whether it be the post-punk of Constantines, the crazy antics of Crystal Antlers or the tunes of my favorite new band I Was a King (pictured at left), it’s destined to be a night that my ears won’t soon forget. Sure, there are other greats gracing Austin this Saturday like The Strange Boys, Oh No Oh My or Au Revoir Simone, but this is the show you definitely need to be at. Buy your tickets.

New Tunes From Crystal Antlers

The latest and greatest crystal in their name band, Crystal Antlers, have a new rockin’ jam for your listening pleasure. The new track is called “Andrew” and will appear on the band’s upcoming LP Tentacles out April 6th. If the whole album sounds like this, we may be in store for one of the years best.

Crystal Antlers @ Beerland (11/2)

Another one our favorite new bands, Crystal Antlers, will be playing at Beerland in Austin Sunday night. We had high praise of the bands opening set for the Kadane Brothers earlier in the summer so we are of course pumped for this one. You can read more about this show on the Beerland website.

06/26 Kadane Brothers Show + Interview

The Kadane Brothers delivered an intimate two guitar and no frills set at Emo’s Austin on Thursday night. Austin was the first show in a series of quick North American tour dates for Matt & Bubba Kadane without their backing band The New Year. The brothers showcased a few new songs off their forthcoming self titled release The New Year due out in September with their band of the same name. Each song of the set featured one of the two brothers singing lead with the other brother singing harmonies to back up. Read more
