Daniel Francis Doyle and the Dreams Back on Slack Capital 2

Slack Capital 2 is a compilation of music by 27 of the greatest bands in Austin. All proceeds from the comp go to SafePlace, which provides support for victims of domestic and sexual violence. We’re unveiling one song per day until the the release party on April 14.

Song of the day: Daniel Francis Doyle & The Dreams — “I Had To Do It”

Daniel Francis Doyle is hard to pin down. Maybe you’ve seen him do his one-man-band “loops” set, where he builds songs layer by layer and beats on the drums while screaming through a headset mic. Maybe you’ve seen him do a nylon-string guitar set, where he reveals a quieter side to his art– easier to see the Jonathan Richman influence. Or maybe you’ve seen him play with The Dreams, his synth pop band, where his neuroses combine with an urgent dance beat closer to Gary Numan than Donna Summer. “I Had To Do It” was made with The Dreams, and it has the herky-jerky charm of an 80’s pop hit, or a Steve Martin skit. Seriously– Oh man, those synths! Produced by SLUGBUG’s Paul Millar, who knows a thing or two about warped synth sounds, this is a track you’ll want to hear again and again for the sugary satisfaction of that synth line that creeps in every chorus, responding delightfully to Doyle’s queasy pleas.

Daniel Francis Doyle is playing the Slack Capital 2 release party April 14 at Barracuda, and he’s told us it will be his final show (what!) with The Dreams. Don’t miss it. — Eric Braden

The Bill Ball: An Interview w/ Eric Bill — October 9th @ Swan Dive

12042917_10103610812125518_894458247127330031_nWith all the buzz about Austin music dying and what not, I think it’s interesting to note that there have been a ton of like-minded individuals coming out to create their own curated shows. We did ATX Popfest, Raw Paw had the Alien Zine, Vegas has Good Vibrations and now there’s the Bill Ball at Swan Dive on October 9th. These things have always been around, but they seem to be gaining prominence as people try to create a sense of community here in town. I caught up with Eric Bill of the band Big Bill to grab some of his thoughts on the First Annual Bill Ball…and his band too. Read on for the answers and a video for the Bill Ball! Read more

Show Preview: Big Bill Tour Kick Off

billyIt’s difficult to tour nowadays, unless you’ve got a pocket of change in your pocket to help carry you on your way.  So, with that, I suggest you go and throw all your money at one of Austin’s great acts, Big Bill.  They just put on a great set with us over at Mohawk on Sunday, and tonight will be your last chance to catch them for several months.  It might, and I stress might, also be one of the last times you get to see Mirror Travel, if the rumor mill is correct….which will be an extremely sad day.  Plus, Daniel Francis Doyle & the Dreams, along with the Eternal Dyad Dance Crew will be starting things off the right way.  The show starts at 9 PM over at Holy Mountain, so get there early to enjoy some cheap libations and get yourself in the mood for some great tunes.

Non-festival goers have some nice options for live music this week in and around Austin.  One of the best choices has to be The Dodos playing at local favorite venue Mohawk.  Joining the indie mainstays are Dustin Wong and Daniel Francis Boyle.  Having seen The Dodos several times before in the live setting, I can tell you that you won’t be disappointed if you scoop up a ticket to this show.

Austin Spotlight: New Music from Daniel Francis Doyle

dfd-t-shirtDaniel Francis Doyle is an Austin musician that deals with the more playful side of pop music.  There’s always been interesting time signatures or non-traditional instruments used in his craft, yet that’s always been carefully wrapped around warm melodies.  Lucky for us all, Daniel has just put up a batch of new tunes; it’s the first I’ve heard from him since 2011.  According to my sources, the music was recorded at The Owl, one of Austin’s best kept secrets, so you never know who popped up to help record.  I like this particular tune for it’s light-hearted guitar stutter, not to mention I’m a fan of his vocal delivery.  There’s 9 new songs, and Daniel’s gracious enough to share them with you all. I’ll keep you posted when we near a release date for these tracks.

Show Preview: Mission of Burma @ Mohawk (7/22)

Date Friday, July 22nd
Location Mohawk
Doors 800pm
Tickets $15 @ Frontgate

One of the great acts that made a musical resurgence during the 00s is Mission of Burma, and since returning to the fold, they’ve kept it going.  Their musical catalog is extremely song, and they’ve written perhaps one of the greatest songs ever in “(That’s When I Reach for My) Revolver.”  I could play that song again and again, and it’s still brilliant.  If you dig the song, and aren’t familiar with the band, a great place to start is A Gun to the Head, which is sort of a compilation. Also on the bill at Mohawk are Austinites Ume and Daniel Francis Doyle.  Should be a great place to start your evening.
