Chuck 2 Shares Teenage Chrononaut

Admittedly, I know very little of Cincinatti, Ohio’s Chuck 2, although I’ll be honest and tell you I’ve really been just sitting back and rocking out to their new album How You Landed Here. Listening to the opening tune, I tried to come up with some magical associations that could easily hook you, and I think I’ve found one that seems fitting, at least in my ears. So, press play on the track below…draw from your musical knowledge…then tell me it doesn’t sound like David Bazan jamming out and writing his own version of Guided By Voices tunes? No? Regardless, this song (and the album) is a ripper, so let those heavy riffs wash ashore!

Straight Banger From Lo Tom

Just about three years ago I fell in love with the self-titled debut album by supergroup Lo Tom, which features David Bazan (Pedro the Lion), Trey Many (Velour 100), Jason Martin (Starflyer 59), and TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion/The Soft Drugs). That album offered us some of the heaviest moments of Control era Pedro with the added bonus of master beat guy Trey Many on percussion. During their time at home, the guys have made another album ready for distribution, but are asking for fans to donate towards the project via Kickstarter. Of course the album announcement comes with a new single to entice fans into giving, and it is yet another straight up banger from the growing supergroup. Check out the rocking “Start Payin'” below and consider donating to the manufacturing costs of LP2.

SXSW 2019 – A Recap

Yet another SXSW is in the books and it’s time for the ATH crew to reminisce a little and offer some highlight from the week behind us. I think we’ve had enough time now to take a few deep breaths, collect our thoughts, and delve through tons of notes and photos. As we’ve done in the past, we’ll offer up awards to bands, venues and events worthy of such praise. It will be glorious. Hit the jump for a full recap with photos.

Introducing: Lo Tom

Supergroup alert! And not just any supergroup, a band featuring one of our longtime faves David Bazan. He’s joined in this new group called Lo Tom by Jason Martin (Starflyer 59), Trey Many (Velour 100/Starflyer 59), and TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion/The Soft Drugs). So apparently these guys made some music together awhile back, sat on the songs for sometime, and have decided to release them now. Below you’ll find their first single entitled “Overboard”. It’s sure to make some of you old school Pedro fans incredibly excited. Pees pants a little….

A debut album is coming sometime this year on Barsuk.

Another New David Bazan Tune

Yep, another day, another hit for Undertow Records. I don’t know what it is, but they have their finger on my record collection at the moment, offering up a new tune from David Bazan. He’s continuing his output with an electronic backbone, using a simplistic loop to create space for his introspective pondering. I like how the tones of the musical notes seem to match the deeper bits of Bazan’s voice, and of course, it’s always great to hear how David looks at the world…especially his world. Care, the title of the new LP, will be released on March 7th, and you better believe I’ll have it in a matter of hours!

David Bazan Still Has It

bazan1While meandering around the internet yesterday, I went into a Pedro the Lion/David Bazan wormhole and came out with information about a new LP from Bazan coming out this Friday. I have no idea what pile of rocks I’ve been under to miss out on this news, but Bazan is so important to my musical history that I’ll be sharing his music regardless of timeliness. The new album I previously mentioned is really more of a collection of songs which saw release on 7″ vinyl last spring via Bazan’s monthly series in 2 volumes. The songs have been reworked, fleshed out, and some have even been redone completely. As a preview, I found this new song “Kept Secrets” on soundcloud yesterday. As always, prepare to be amazed, entranced, and possibly broken down emotionally.

Blanco will hit stores this Friday, May 13th. Pre-order now via Undertow.

What Moon Things Slow Vibing

spaceThere’s something brewing in this new single from What Moon Things. Starting off, it brings this bedroom electronic vibe, which in and of itself is pretty chilled out. But, what caught me is the the vocals; there’s something oddly familiar in their sound…almost like David Bazan. This track appears on the band’s Space Jams EP (not featuring Michael Jordan), but they are also back working hard on what should be a relaxed new album come 2016. It’s something relaxing to enjoy while the weather outside is chilly; warm sounds and smooth vocals…kick it.

Pure Indie Rock from Overseas

overseas-album-cover-500I know Ryan will agree with this, as Overseas are pretty much our favorite super group.  As Texas kids of the 90s, we grew into our own listening to the music of Centro-matic, Pedro the Lion and Bedhead, all who have components that are playing key roles here.  That’s right, you’ve got the Kadane’s, Will Johnson and Mr. Bazan.  I don’t think that anyone who was around that the very thought of that combination alone gets chills going.  I don’t need to say much, but I’ll share a few jams with you, just so you can revel in our joy. They’ll release their self-titled LP on June 11th.
