Day Joy Return!

14900599_1101102266671394_6097542225198903490_nWe made some posts about Orlando based outfit Day Joy in late 2012/early 2013 and hyped the band as one of the next big things. After the hype, no one really heard much from the group over the last 3 years as Michael Serrin, the mastermind of the project, dealt with the loss of a family member and depression. Well Serrin has luckily decided to make music again and just sent me this gem entitled”Florida’s Warm”. You can obviously hear some of the pain in Serrin’s voice as he takes us through this hushed beauty of a track. Powerful stuff.

Expect a new album from Day Joy to come your way in the Spring of 2017.

New Single from Day Joy

DayJoy5_191340Just a short while ago, Day Joy released their excellent album, Go to Sleep, Mess, which features this great new single.  I like the fact that this tune exepmlifies the diversity in the group’s sound, offering a look at the softer side of the band’s musical approach.  The vocals are really soft on this tune, and there’s no rushing their delivery.  Meanwhile, the backing tracks have some quieted picking going on in the background, all coated in a wash of atmospheric haze.  It’s a long number, with plenty of interesting moments that unfold before your ears…stay tuned to the end to listen to the string arrangement that bookends the tune.

Sprawling Beauty from Day Joy

Part of me wishes it would one day get cold in Austin, that way I could really delve into some of the music that seems perfectly fitting for this time of year.  On the newest gem from Day Joy, you can really get lost in the layered textures, emotionally pulling you in with touches of string arrangements.  Even the echo of pre-recorded sounds is somewhat haunting, yet the effortless harmonies inherent in the song seem like they’d fit right in if one was to be sitting fireside.  It’s such a joy to discover bands that really work to hone their craftsmanship.  You can find this tune on Go to Sleep, Mess–it comes out on February 12th via Small Plate Records.

Great Floating Folk Number from Day Joy

I’ve been looking through the window at the rain for hours, trying to get the site ready for the week.  One of the tracks we were sent just seems perfectly fitting for the soundtrack of these last two hours. Florida’s Day Joy have crafted this emotional folk number, which gives me the impression that my life is quietly floating by as the rain soaks my yard.  It’s a pretty special listen, and one that moved me the minute I pressed play.  You can find this track and others on the band’s debut, Go To Sleep, Mess; the record will be released soon by Small Plate Records.
