Blistering Indiepop from A Certain Smile

Just as I was lamenting a shortage of great indiepop vibes in the 2018, it looks like the world was destined to prove me wrong. Today A Certain Smile announce the release of their debut album, bringing the sound of Portland’s indiepop to our ears. The track rushes forward from the get-go, employing little touches of shoegaze in the guitar to go along with more traditional jagged lines stabbing through the mix. Vocals from Thomas Andrew provide that fireside warmth that pop fans crave, sending out wave after wave of melodious lines through your speakers. The debut album Fits and Starts will be released by the band on March 9th, and it’s sure to be a gem.

Stop what you’re doing right now and check out this new tune called “Spit” from Brooklyn based outfit Abraham King. It starts a little bit slow, almost a downer to be honest, but once it drops and the heavy bass comes in, it brings something truly special. Think old school 90s indie bands like Pavement if the breaks were even heavier.

Abraham King will dropping their debut LP sometime this fall. Stay tuned.

ATX Spotlight: Brand New US Weekly

Listen up. US Weekly has been gradually building a huge following in Austin, and with the announcement of their debut album, they’re ready to break through to a larger audience. I love how you can feel singer Chris Nordahl stalking the stage with his vocal delivery, bringing the band’s live energy through on this recording. You’ll also get to hear the band disrupt your ears with discordant guitars and an underlying tension fueled by Kent’s drum rolls. Their full length album hits the streets on April 22nd via Night Moves, ready to take the rest of the country by storm!

Check the New Rays Video

You’ve by now been anticipating the new Rays album as much as I have, and today we’re checking back in as the band bring a video to the fold for their new single “Made of Shadows.” The tune has these sharp little guitar cuts, almost dancing around one another, while the vocals are thrown out with a rabid indifference. You’ll find the charm of the band apparent in the lo-fi, early MTV style of the video; it’s not like we want all our bands to take themselves too seriously, after all. Their debut album will hit on March 30th, courtesy of the powerhouse label, Trouble in Mind.

I raved about Terry Malts last year, and this year I’m going to praise one of their other projects, Business of Dreams. I’ve talked about the Corey Cunningham’s side gig before, and while I expected a certain level of greatness, I wanted to be sure you were aware too! It’s nine tracks of great indiepop, some of it dreamy and some of it more upbeat, like my personal favorite “Joyride.” Now that I think of it, “Turning Away” might be another favorite. Well, who am I kidding, I love it all. Take some time out of your day to indulge yourself in these pop delights. Buy it from Parked in Hell.

Diet Cig Give Us More To Love

If it isn’t abundantly clear yet, we here at ATH are big fans of that band called Diet Cig. We just saw them at Sound on Sound, have attended their show in the past, and love the energy brought by the duo in everything they do. With that said, I was obviously excited this morning to get an email delivering news of a new single and the release of their debut album. I already can’t wait for the album and a chance to see them again come March. Very excite!

Swear I’m Good at This will come out on April 7th via Frenchkiss Records.

Chris Bierden Is Invisible Boy

chrisbierdenChris Bierden spends a great deal of his time with Polica, but don’t think that Invisible Boy will resemble that outfit too much; it’s clear with this single that he’s got another itch to scratch. Listening through, this sounds like a grander aim, something akin to a lounging version of Bowie. I love the fact that the central figure, aside from the vocals is the piano work…that always gets me for some reason. It almost sounds like Chris is channeling the world of Destroyer as well, crafting a huge operatic pop figure. Look for his debut album on November 11th via Totally Gross National Product.

ATX Spotlight: Good Talk Readies Debut Album

good talk wall helloThose hanging around Austin have hopefully caught on to the burgeoning pop rock scene, but those of you who aren’t living here should also take note of what we’re letting into the world, like Good Talk, for example. The group’s ready to release their debut this weekend, and the big single is ridiculously good. Guitars seemingly discordantly crash against each other, emphasized by the smashing cymbals. Something in the vocal delivery sounds really familiar, like a friend telling you the story of his life; the tones hit are slightly imperfect, which in the end, fits perfectly into the group’s sound. I’ve been listening to this record all weekend, and I hope you’ll join the band to celebrate their release this Saturday at Cheer Up Charlies!

Cats of Transnistria Announce Debut Album

catsCats of Transnistria have appeared on our pages before, but I don’t think they’ve made quite the impression as this brand new single should make on your ears. It’s a slow moving piece, unfolding with quiet guitar notes beneath an incredible atmospheric background. Vocals don’t even enter the picture until 2.5 minutes into the track, effortlessly sitting atop the musical mix. As the song continues, you’re likely to be immersed as the volume of the guitars rings louder, building a huge sonic wall; it’s pretty perfect. This comes as an announcement to the band’s new debut, Divine, which will be released by Soliti on March 18th.

PATV Deliver Another Hit

unnamed (11)The entire team here at ATH has shown full support and kind words about NYC based band Public Access TV since we first heard about them a year or so ago. Their sound is such a simple approach to the pop rock genre that I’d find it difficult to understand how anyone could dislike it. Think of them as a Warm Soda or Vaccines like band if you’re needing a comparison. Also check out this new track called “On Location” and let us know what ya think. We dig it.
