Hey There Halfsour

Halfsour_091Another day, another hit from Jigsaw Records 2016 collection. This time out, we’ve got a tune from Boston’s Halfsour, bringing about a more ramshackle bit of power-pop. The track has an inner hook, but it’s coated in the way the vocals are delivered with a devil-may-care attitude; it even sounds like the tune was recorded live, giving it a punch that you don’t always get with perfected studio blends. They’ll be releasing their debut album on January 29th, and if you’re asking me, this song is one helluva way to kick things off.

Fresh Track from Puunhalaaja

pjListening to Puunhalaaja, and bands like Dungen, reminds me of the power of music. I clearly have no idea what the band’s name means, nor what the lyrics hold, but I’m drawn to the Finnish artist regardless. There’s a smooth emotion sitting in the groove of the guitar work, and the vocals feel extremely familiar, at least in their tone. Music, I suppose, always lives in its emotive qualities, be it the song you lost your virginity to or something that connects to you more deeply; it matters to us because we leave affected. I look forward to seeing what else happens when the debut album is dropped on Soliti Music on November 20th.

Fortuna Pop Brings You Chorusgirl

Chorusgirl_Close_up_Blue_webToday’s the day when I get to count on reliable labels I adore to bring us great new tunes, such as this brand new single from Chorusgirl. There’s a definitive nostalgic nod, as mentioned in the band’s bio (Lush/The Cure), but I see the group fitting right alongside acts like Eternal Summers. You’ve got guitar work swirling around the vocals, all the while the rhythm section propels the song forward, giving the track a juxtaposition between brooding and shimmering joy. You’ll be able to grab their debut album from Fortuna Pop on November 13th.

Beauty From Wilsen

untitledWilsen is a relatively new band from New York city fronted and creatively run by the lovely Tamsin Wilsen.  As a new debut LP is coming soon, Tamsin and her band are sharing a preview of their material with this beautiful track “Garden”.  One can find elements of Feist in the song combined with some backing beats that drop at all the perfect moments.  A truly great introduction to this young artist.

Stay tuned with more information on a debut LP dropping sometime later this year.

Noisy Rocker from Ovlov

ovlovFeel like I started out the day with sort of a soft touch, musically speaking, so I want to make sure you all get your dosage of rock n’ roll as the day draws to a close.  This sprawling track opens up gently, then blasts off with noisy discordant guitar work.  Whilst Ovlov definitely exemplifies a louder edge, there’s still an element of accessibility that breaks through with the delivery of the vocals. After working hard for several years, the band is finally ready to unleash Am, their debut album; it will be out on July 2nd via Exploding in Sound Records.

Sweet Folk Tune from Lost Lander

Those of you looking for something to fulfill your folk/americana niche this week definitely need to look into Lost Lander, the project of Matt Sheehy. He’s just released his debut for the project, DRRT, this week, and I’ve definitely got some room on my daily playlist for this album.  There’s definitely a rising moment in this song, as the strummed guitar builds to an eruption of lush orchestration featuring various string instruments; it all crashes into a steady drumbeat, creating an emotionally beautiful moment within the song…and then it even has a bit of a breakdown.  This isn’t your run-of-the-mill folk number, so lose yourself in this jam.

New(ish) Jam from You Won’t

As the musical year draws to a close, it’s getting kind of hard to find some solid tracks to toss your way, but I didn’t have to go too far once I visited the site of our old friends over at Old Flame Records.  They’ll be releasing the debut of You Won’t, titled Skeptic Goodbye, and it’s definitely something you’ll want on your 2012 radar.  This track has been floating around for a few weeks or so, and it’s going to be floating around in my head for the rest of the week I feel.  The gentle strum of the mandolin along with the accompanying percussive stop just makes its way into your soul, in only the best way possible.  Look out for these guys to make a big splash in 12′.

New Music from Veronica Falls

It seems like Slumberland Records is intent on signing all the great bands in the world; I expect a Celebrity Death Match between them and Captured Tracks soon.  They just announced today that they’ll be releasing the debut record from Veronica Falls on September 20th.  The label has even been kind enough to offer up a free download of “Come On Over” for every one to sample.  This track sort of begins with a trickle, jangling guitars and all, but then it jumps off with banging drums and faster guitars.  Female vocals soon enter to provide a dream-state that will accompany listeners through the rest of the song.  It’s a pretty promising single, so let’s all get excited about Veronica Falls.
