The Slow Painters are a four piece band out of Oslo who create their very own brand of indie rock, sprinkled with hints of Americana and folk. My first introduction to the band came by way of this impressive new single called “Egon”. It is a tightly wound bit of indie music, exploring avenues of foot stomping folk music and chant worthy epics. Though the band is new to me, and likely you, I expect to be hearing more from them in the future after my favorite single of the week.

The Slow Painters will release their debut, self-titled LP on August 28th via KeepSecret Records.

Gum Country Announce Debut LP

Why on Earth can’t more bands sound like this? I mean, I reckon I’d get bored after a long time, but I’ll be damned if this Gum Country tune isn’t the right jam for me. It’s got the fuzzy bits that make my ears perk up near the stereo, but still carries on that pop sensibility that makes a song worthy of repeated listens. The band set out to make ‘harsh twee,’ and while I can hear that applying, I do think they take this beyond twee pastiche; it almost seems to have a little psychedelic noodle coursing through the core of the song. Their debut LP Somewhere will be out via Kingfisher Bluez and Burger Records.

Album Stream: Brian Mietz – Panzarotti

As a bit of a break from SXSW news, today I am pleased to share with you the debut album from New Jersey based artist Brian Mietz. Though you may not know him by name, Brian has spent a ton of time in the New Jersey music scene in various music projects and creating album art work for several indie bands. Mietz made the choice to step out on his own with his debut LP Panzarotti, and boy what a debut it is. At it’s core, the album is essentially a bedroom pop record, but with tons and tons of layers to peel back as you give it repeat listens. One fan can find elements of garage rock, some folk, and tons of bright and airy pop elements. You can purchase the new LP from Mietz via Sludge People.

After a promising close to 2016 with a couple of singles we loved, Chicago based The Hazy Seas finally delivered us a much anticipated new single last month. Much to our surprise, the band sent over this new single called “Old Clothes” over the Winter Break season and I’m pleased to share it with you today. As usual, the band’s name once again offers a perfect description of their music with this one again being seriously hazy while still offering some weird pop elements to keep the listener engaged. Could the band’s upcoming LP be one of our first favorites of the year?

The Hazy Seas Share Heavy Heads

There’s a whole lot of alliteration in that headline, but there’s a whole lot of reasons to listen to Chicago’s The Hazy Seas too. For one, you can’t tell me that as soon as those guitars start dancing their way into the scene that you’re not just tapping your toes incessantly. The rhythmic pulse adds extra bounce too, giving this song great energy to push things forward. Interestingly, there’s nice juxtaposition with the vocals, coated and cloudy, kind of this dark solemnity, which matches up with the song’s lyrics taking on the subject of making tough decisions and feeling lost while others look on at your life. The group will release their debut LP in early January of next year, so keep your eyes peeled.

Check New Terry vs Tori

The last I heard from Terry vs Tori was back in 2018 when they dropped an EP via Bedroom Box Records…but a good Internet friend sent me their way again, and lucky for me…and you. This track is their second from their forthcoming debut LP, and it’s got just the right amount of gaze blended with the jangle; it gives a constant sensation of moving/falling throughout, depending on how you wanna look at it. Erica Pender’s voice is perfectly fit right smack dab between both genres, riding it out with this effortless cool warmth that makes pop nerds swoon. No exact date on the release, but I’ll keep you posted! Also…the band is from Sevilla, which is where my dad’s currently living, so you know, small world; they’re the best of friends.

Rat Fancy Announce Debut LP

When I first heard Rat Fancy‘s Suck a Lemon EP, I was hooked; it was about 15 minutes of pop-laden fuzz rock that I couldn’t put down. But, that was all one hot minute ago. Today we bring you news that the band have announced their debut LP, and they’re doing so with in typical infectious fashion. The song itself is like a more raucous version of what the band teased on their EP; Diana sounds more confident and things are just a little more scuzzy texturally…and they never shy too far away from pop sensibility. For me, the video is one of the reasons I love this band; you can feel the energy of Diana and Greg as they jump about on whatever screen you’re watching this on; you want to be there, you want to be them. Sometimes, this old world of ours is crazy and frustrating and confusing, so why not just go out and make some trouble! Stay Cool will be out on June 7th via HHBTM and Solidarity Club Records.

Static Diary Release Video for Phrase from Business

We’ve previously written about Scott Danbom‘s new project, Static Diary, and today we’re happy to share the animated video for album track “Phrase from Business.” It’s a delicate number from the get-go, with a bare piano accompanying Scott’s voice; that piano eventually leans into a heavier electronic pulse. Danborn’s voice has this certain fragility to it that’s intoxicating; it hits it’s peak as the song swell’s around the chorus. About two minutes in, the song surges into a heavy handed jam of sorts, fuzzy and ominous ’til the fadeout. It’s a gorgeous number, and you’ll find it on the Static Diary LP, which drops Friday.

And, if you happen to be in the Denton area, Scott and band have their release show at Dan’s Silver Leaf on Saturday night!

Another Ditty from The Hayman Kupa Band

Two distinctive voices wrapping around each other isn’t always a success, unless its done by The Hayman Kupa Band. Darren and Emma tend to trade back verses on this new single, with a huge chorus really executing their united powers. Musically, you’re running through the fields on a sunny day, stopping from time to time to revel in the company of a great friend. Chugging chords help push the band’s pop objective with little percussive bits sneaking into the party from behind. Thanks to Fika Recordings we’ll all be able to relish the joys of life when they release the band’s LP on July 21st.

New Music from Business of Dreams

In my monthly Corey Cunningham update, today we have a synth driven pop hit from his Business of Dreams project. Immediately your ears are hit with bouncing rhythms, quite playful from the get-go. Vocally, Corey dreamily drapes his voice atop those beats, allowing juxtaposed feelings to mesh perfectly in your speakers. Listen closely at the 1.20 minute mark, where a nice little guitar dances around in the chorus, furthering the delight for listeners. This song will appear on the debut Business of Dreams LP, which comes via Cunningham’s label, Parked in Hell, on February 2nd. Listen now and thank me later.
