Writing a song with the idea that “now everything can be recorded and it’s usually nothing we want to remember” seems like a pretty heavy notion. But, at least when Mononegatives are banging it out they somehow manage to make it all feel like a bit of fun. At times they feel like Wire, then they feel like they’re calling on the Spits too, buzzing guitars and this claustrophobia where everything shakes out into this defiant noisy masterpiece best listened to on full blast. Mononegatives Drop Role Reversal Single

Mononegatives are becoming increasingly difficult to pigeonhole…and for that I’m eternally grateful. At times, the group feels like they’re operating with a penchant for video game noise pop, but then the beat settles into that motorik-ish backbeat, where jagged riffs come in and cut the song up as the vocals are delivered in an almost robotically manufactured nature. As the chorus of “role reversal” comes to life, there’s a slight hint at melodic tendencies, despite the rest of the song operating in a fairly industrial realm. You’ll flip back and forth: is this punk? do these lads do new wave? does it rule? It rules. Just listen.

Sex Park Share Obligation

Well, just another case of the Mondays here, so feel like getting wrapped up in some sort of dark electronic blanket to cozy up next to my computer before my kids come in today. This new Sex Park tune just dropped, and it’s got some great things working for it, which works for me. The tune kind of takes on this shimmering sort of electronic pop, akin to maybe Black Marble at current. But, what really drew me in was the vocals here; I’ve heard tons of bands doing dark electronic pop after all. I love the deepness of the vocals; they remind me of Majical Cloudz and a voice I really miss. This tune appears on the band’s forthcoming LP, but it’s also on a split 7″ for Dowd Records!

Shasta Share Roaming Hearts Video

San Francisco’s Shasta has some heavy-hitters working on crafting the tunes that appear on their debut EP; you’ve got members who’ve played in Bleached, the Shins, Beck and Gothic Tropic…if we’re namedropping. On the band’s latest single, it’s just on the knife’s edge of a dance hit; the sharp edges are there, and there’s a seductive nature to the tune that beckons you to the dance floor. Perhaps a touch too slow for traditional dance grooves, but in that subtlety you’re likely to dive deeper into the song’s natural intoxication, guaranteeing you’ll have it on blast at your next late night shindig. Look for the debut EP on March 13th via Dowd Records.

TLA Share Forty Years Video

Listener beware! It’s hard not to get entranced by the sonic pulse of this music accompanied with this incredible video just released by TLA. The group is the project of various members of acts like The Shins and The Pleased, which were two acts I was very much in love with during their prime…but this is something wholly different. Visuals aside (though they’re stunning), this feels like what Billy Corgan was after on Adore, only with better execution. I feel like the vocal melodies get tied perfectly into the beats (I’m all about the choruses), adding this great textural feel that’s gives off this psychedelic rave quality that I’m really drawn towards here. The group will release New Language on November 1st via Dowd Records.
