Quirky Pop from Joey Fourr

joeyYou know by now that I’m a huge fan of Art Is Hard Records, especially when it comes to their Pizza Club Singles.  They just recently tossed up this oddity from Joey Fourr.  The tune warbles in and out of the speakers, with male and female vocals working in unison.  Sure, it’s got a bit of that home recording spin on it, but that doesn’t take away from the song’s ability to get under your skin.  Listen below, and feel free to browse AIH for tons of hidden gems; you can get some sweet free downloads and order some limited releases.

New Single from Paul Cook and the Chronicles

artworks-000085447342-csi8dq-t500x500I’ve got a really soft spot for Paul Cook and the Chronicles.  Paul’s got this heavenly voice that reminds me of more innocent days of music enjoyment.  On the band’s latest single, there’s this light bit of guitar that lays quietly beneath the rest of the production…which isn’t too shabby in and of itself.  Duties for recording this track were done by Todd Roache, who also handled the work on Paul’s “Radar.”  At some point, I expect the group to finish up touches on a full-length, but for now, they’re letting us enjoy this beauty for free.

Another New Track from the Rosebuds

blueeyesWe’re just a few short weeks away from the release of the new album from The Rosebuds, and another single has made it’s way into the world.  Ivan takes the lead on this track, and I’ll be the first to say that this is one of my favorite songs from the group, period.  There’s a pronounced energy to it, which highlights the band’s exuberance.  There’s also a few moments when the band pulls back just for a second; those moments get me every time.  Sand + Silence will be released by the good people at Western Vinyl on August 5th; it’s shaping up to be one of those records that wins everyone over, so don’t be left out.

New Music from Blooper

bloopyIt’s already been a great July, with several exciting new albums announced, and a few new hits, so it’s only fitting that Blooper should announce their new So Very Small EP. It’s the perfect blend of power-pop, with jangling guitars hiding beneath the distortion; there’s also a certain warmth to the track that endears itself to the indiepop fans.  The band doesn’t release new music too often, so you’ve got to be excited that the Seattle act has opted to get up-and-going with this new tune. You can order the EP from Jigsaw Records as we speak, but for now just revel in the track below.

Pleased to Meet You: Niagra

niagraApparently I’m not as up on my avant pop music in the Italian scene as I used to be, as I’m pretty impressed by Turin’s Niagra. The duo construct these rather interesting pop pieces that, from what I’ve heard, compile all sorts of electronic elements (beats, loops, samples) to serve as the background for their varying approaches to pop songwriting.  Here, the vocals have this soft touch, which works in direct contrast to the pulsating music they’ve used.  This fall they’ll be releasing their album, Don’t Take It Personally, on Metronome Records on September 8th; it definitely won’t be your run-of-the-mill electronic pop record.

Rock Out with Dribble

dribbleChecking in on my favorite country of Australia, I stumbled upon this excellent new tune from Dribble.  It starts out innocently enough before blasting forth with a discordant bounce and riotous vocals.  There’s a spirit within the song that can only be fully realized when surrounded by a bunch of friends in a tiny little club.  Still, the track packs a huge punch, which is perhaps owed to Mikey Young of Total Control/Eddy Current, who recorded the band’s new 7″.  It’ll be out shortly via Cool Death Records.

Another Track from The Pharmacy

Pharmacy-blog-534x380I’m really expecting this new album from The Pharmacy to catch a lot of ears, especially considering that I felt their first album, Stoned and Alone, was vastly underrated.  This brand new single has a slower pace to it, which illustrates the band’s growth since their first release.  The guitars are taking their time, weaving a world of country-tinged chords that allow for the vocals to really take in all the focus.  If you’re a fan of Natural Child, then Spells will definitely be something to look forward to; it’s being released by Old Flame Records on August 12th.

Fresh Tune from Zola Jesus

zolaWhen I saw that a new Zola Jesus track was floating around the net, this was not at all what I was expecting, though I’m not saying I hate it.  Her first few efforts were filled with this ethereal pop, often focusing more on the emotional side of the songs than anything else.  But, this new track immediately shows she’s got something new up her sleeve; her voice still has it’s gentle tone, but the electronic beat is wholly unexpected. Sure, there were electronic touches fleshing out the sound early on, but this pushes the artist purely into the direction of straight electronic pop.  You know what. I like it, and if you do, look for Taiga to be released on October 7th.

Great Return for Imaginary Pants

coverImaginary Pants only have a handful of small releases, but I’m really in love with their most recent EP, Kites at Night.  Perhaps it’s because there’s five new songs; you can’t ever complain when you get five songs with Rose Melberg involved. There’s a variety of songs too, with the one below opening the EP up with a warm bit of summery pop, but there’s also a couple of more upbeat tracks like “Creaking Gates” and “Bleak Outside.”  Either way, you’re not going to be disappointed with what you’re getting, and if you’re so incline, you can get the EP for NYP or order the tape from Lost in Sound Tapes.  You win either way.

Relaxed Tune from The Golden Dregs

goldenIt’s that time again.  Art Is Hard Records have put out their latest Pizza Club Single, this time with The Golden Dregs…it’s the project of Ben Woods who’s done tons of great work with bands like Gorgeous Bully and the Black Tambourines.  This time, however, he’s stepped out as the leader of the band, and what an exciting introduction to his own skill set.  You’ll hear a bit of a country twang in the trickling guitar work, crafting an atmosphere that leaves the perfect set up for his relaxing vocal entrance.  You’re going to dig this groove.
