Another Tune from Jess Williamson

jessJess Williamson is fast becoming a big name over here at our homes, warming her way into our hearts with a few beautifully stunning tracks in less than a few weeks.  This latest track premiered just before the break, and it’s got a different bent than the track that we released earlier.  Her vocal performance here is steadier, though there’s a bit of a quiver, keeping the uniqueness of her style alive.  Whereas “Native State” seemed more playful, there’s a somber quality to this track that’s even more emotional than her previous single.  Her album Native State will be out in January, to an excited masses.

Soft Pop from The High Wire

highwiresYou’ve got to love when bands stretch out the negative space to allow for their melodies to shine perfectly.  This is precisely what you’ll get when you spin this track from London’s The High Wire.  There’s tons of open space in the track, but the band manage to pace the track perfectly, maximizing their pop strategies to win over the listeners. I love how the song seems to build, yet holds back throughout, pushing your heart’s anticipation to its breaking point.  The trio is finishing up touches on their album, which is slated for release in the middle of 2014.  After this tune, I’m not sure I can wait that long.

New Music from Haunted Houses

hauntedAs the year winds down, new music to whet your appetite is becoming harder and harder to find, except for some gems that came out at the end of last week.  One of the tunes that caught my attention was this newest jam from Haunted House.  The song is one of the tracks set to fit onto their self-titled EP, which will be released in early 2014; it holds onto a bedroom quality, while still having enough musicianship to make the song sound huge.  I love the foggy quality of the vocals; they still have some clarity despite being spun through a little wash.  Should be an interesting listen when we get to hear the rest of the tracks.

Another Gem from Mathew Cothran

mathewIf you haven’t listened to Mathew Cothran in any of his various projects then I’m going to force you to admit you’ve made some mistakes! Well, okay, I won’t be that forceful, but I’ll continue to promote his work on these here pages.  Recently, the man behind Coma Cinema unleashed a few short songs for our enjoyment on his Failure EP.  I don’t know what it is about his songwriting, but I get completely wrapped up in everything he has to say.  There’s something I can’t put my finger on, but I love every minute I spend listening to a song he’s penned. Join me, won’t you?

Art Is Hard Announce Gorgeous Bully EP

artworks-000062786249-84xil3-t500x500I always keep an eye on what’s going on with Art Is Hard Records; they’re a small time label doing some interesting releases on a small, but exceptional scale.  They just recently announced that they’ll be putting out the new Nobody Hates You as Much as You Hate Yourself  EP by Gorgeous Bully, and the lead track is absolutely something you need to hear.  It’s infectious as any piece of garage-pop I’ve heard this year, but it still has enough of a ramshackle punch to make it more than just a mediocre piece of pop music.  It’s going to come out on a limited cassette, and if I’m guessing right, they’ll go pretty quick, so get at it!

Austin Spotlight: Jess Williamson

jessJust so the world of Austin musicians doesn’t hate us, we’re not just into the rock n’ roll stylings of our fair city.  Personally, I love all sorts of different stuff, but right now I’m really enjoying the music of Austin’s own Jess Williamson.  I love her ornate style of finger-picking the banjo, and her unique control of her pipes.  It’s a bit odd, but in that endearing sort of way that makes the boys (and girls) swoon.  She’s set to release her new record, Native State, on January 28th via Brutal Honest, and if it’s all this carefully orchestrated, then it’ll definitely catch the ears of those in Austin, and hopefully beyond.

Student Teachers Get Re-Release!

ST_PubPhoto-660x439Man, everyone is getting re-released these days, which is actually quite alright with me, as this latest re-release is sort of dear to my heart.  My favorite time period is probably the late 70s NYC, or Lawrence in the late 90, but will stick with the former for now.  The Student Teachers were one of those underground acts that I only heard about; I knew I’d probably like them considering all the bands they’d played with, and that one of Blondie’s members helped record their stuff.  While I’m harping on this whole NYC punk bent, you’ve got to hear the single they’ve re-released to get you acquainted with their music.  It’s definitely not punk, though there’s still that outsider affinity.  Seems like a natural bridge between Bowie and NY…to me anyways.  So, if you like what you hear, you can grab the Invitation to The Student Teachers from Nacional Records.

Noisy Jam from Thunders

thundersI feel like I’ve been taking it easy with my listening lately, pushing lots of softer jams your way.  But, I figured I’d change that up and give you guys a listen to Thunders. The band is offering up this crunchy bit of noisy pop rock as the first single to their record Weird Spines White Trash Whatever, which will be release in January via Maximum Pelt.  I dig the fact that the band is operating around this truly pop-centric musical form, but they’ve just opted to turn up the noise all around the track, making things more fun for us all.  You like your rock noisy? Come no further.

New Music from The Rainy Afternoons

rainyMan, sometimes Texas is so big you just don’t realize the hidden gems hiding in your own backyard.  It took a UK blog, Burning World, to shine a light on the Rainy Afternoons, which is the project of one of the former members of Flying Nun band, Garageland.  That band fared pretty well, and I think some of the songs from this project definitely have some longevity.  The songs on this short unnamed EP range from fuzzy to super accessible, such as the song below.  Be sure to check out all the tunes up for offer, and don’t forget that you can always donate to help the cause…well, you should always donate.

Monday Morning Dance Party with De Lux

deluxIf you’re anything close to me, then I know Monday’s can be a struggle; it’s hard to get out of bed sometimes in order to get going.  So I figured I’d bust out this throbbing jam from De Lux to get you up and out of your chair. Initially the vibe got me going, bobbing my head around the house, but then the lyrics came in, adding to the party.  They’re coated a bit here, but the muddy feel definitely adds to the vibe you’ll get with this tune. It reminds me of what LCD Soundsystem could have sounded like if they were any good.  You can get your hands on their self-titled EP on December 10th if you’re looking to party, but for now, let’s dance.
