Pop Rock from Piskie Sits

piskiesitsIf you’re like me, growing up in the 90s really defined who I am as a listener; I always think first to that time period when thinking of how to make nods to acts I dig.  In the case of Piskie Sits, I don’t think there’s one particular thing that makes me look back over a decade, especially since the Malkmus shout is very much alive in the now.  All I can say is that I can picture myself bouncing and rocking to this hit with all my friends back in the day; it makes it all the more special that it still resonates today!  The group will release Creature Feature via Philophobia in October.

New Music from Blessed Feathers

blessedfeathersWe’ve all got tastes that go all over the place, so why not indulge ourselves and travel that way with Blessed Feathers who offer up the softer side of Wisconsin.  One reason to take note is that the person who produced the group’s record is Kevin McMahon, who has the Walkmen and Real Estate under his belt, so you know the songs are going to sound beautiful.  But, producers can’t work without great songs, and I’m pretty sure you could file this away as such, offering gentle melodies and a wonderful female backing vocal, all servicing the focal point of Donivan Berube’s voice. The band will release Order of the Arrow on November 5th, featuring this hit.

Download the New Single from ODESZA

artworks-000057705660-fz57u7-t500x500I figure if we want to cover music, we should probably try to cover all of it, right? This new track from ODESZA isn’t my typical fair, as it’s mostly, if not entirely samples, but there’s something about it that’s really caught my attention. I like the rising action of the track, yet it holds back not completely giving into the need for a dropped beat that explodes in your ears.  Also, I like the careful little glitches placed here and there, encouraging me to listen actively, which is how it should be.  You can pick up the new My Friends Never Die EP tomorrow when it’s released!

Dyaln of the Mallard Returns as FRONDS

frondsRemember the dark punk of The Mallard? Well, don’t think that FRONDS is going to sound anything like that just because former member, Dylan Tidyman-Jones, is behind the sounds.  Instead, he’s crafted this incredible dreamy pop album, featuring the song below; it’s a self-titled album that will be out on October 8th by new Castle Face imprint Do Not Disturb.  My ears hear bits of Papercuts, just in the way there’s a shimmering bit of pop lurking beneath the dream-like atmosphere of the tune.  It’s just a really majestic tune that seems perfect to take us all into the weekend.

Slow Rocker from Fuzz

fuzzThose of you who’ve been on the Ty Segall rock n’ roll bandwagon have to love what you’re hearing from his latest project, Fuzz.  He’s teamed up with a couple of friends (one who’s in his regular band) to bring a shredding, noise filled act to your ears.  On the latest single from Fuzz, the slow building tune gradually makes its way, erupting into a wall of noise at the chorus.  I actually really dig the mellower moments on this tune, offering us a look at the softer-side Segall’s been brandishing of late…but dammit if that’s not a chorus for the ages.  In the Red Records will be releasing this self-titled album on October 1st.  He’ll also be in Austin on the 4th.

John Dwyer Unearths The Herms

hermspromophoto_101756Being John Dwyer has to be pretty sweet.  Not only does he get to front Thee Oh Sees, but he gets to run Castle Face Records too.  A great band and a great label? Sweet gig bro.  It’s also allowed him some time to really dig deep into his local or nearby history, as is the case with Berkley band The Herms.  He’s taken some early demos and 8-track recordings from the group and compiled them into the Drop Out Vol. 1 LP.  This is the first take on this band for many of us, and this swaggering bit of rock n’ roll is enough to see exactly why John took on the project.  It’s rock like this that I can get behind.

Yet Another Hit from Dot Dash

dotdashWhen it rains it pours, and in this case, it’s raining hits for our friends in Dot Dash.  The DC group has just released their latest LP, Half-Remembered Dream, via The Beautiful Music, and the latest single is just another reason why more people should put everything down to fall in love with this band. There’s a bit more of a punkier element on this track, but the warmth of the vocals, which dominates the new record, really does wonders to keep the song perfectly balanced throughout.  If you’re in need of a new album that combines great melodies with power-pop guitars, then go get your hands on this year’s hottest ticket.

New Music from Astrid Swan

astrdNot too long ago we told you that Astrid Swan was working on wrapping up her 5th studio album, Astrid4.  Today we bring you another new track from that release, which shows the minimalist artist broadening her sound.  The piano is definitely playing the skeletal background role here, with rolling drums and horns lurking in the background.  Their union provides an emphatic punch to the song itself, allowing for the sensible pop listener to fall head over heels.  This record will see a release by Soliti on October 25th.

Mind Spiders Rock It Out

Mind SpidersThe last two LPs from Mind Spiders have always received adulation and heavy rotation here at ATH, so it probably won’t change when the group releases their newest, Inhumanistic; it’s going to be released via Dirtnap Records on October 8th.  If you’ve caught the band in the last year, you’ve probably seen the track below; it’s a quick blasting song in the band’s traditional rock n’ roll fashion, pushing guitars quickly in anticipation of the group’s dynamite drumming.  And with an anthemic chorus of “make make make make” there’s no reason you won’t have a blast hopping about to this tune.

Floating Pop from The Olive Shoots

oliveshootsIt’s been a rough year for some of the great indie pop labels, and I had worried that Dufflecoat Records might succumb to the demands of the world.  Luckily, they’ve decided to keep doors open for now, preparing to release a couple of great acts; the first you should take notice of is The Olive Shoots.  The one-woman Swedish act has just released her Anteros EP via the label, and the lead track requires your attention today.  Vocals drift in, and the tension builds via ambient noise, just before it all comes crashing down into the realm of explosive pop.  After the crash the vocals take a bit to re-enter, but they come in strong and emotional.  Go support good music; pick up this EP today.
