New Music from Mind Brains

Mind Brains Porch 1 BWPop music has a tendency to get stale, so it’s refreshing to hear an act like Athens’ Mind Brains who continue to break all the rules.  On the opening track of their new self-titled LP, you’ll hear just that sort of construction, with minimal instrumentation plodding along as a swell of choral vocalists burst forth from the distance.  There’s space age experiments being conducted too, right beneath the song’s nose.  You’ll be able to hear the band’s entire composition when their album is released on January 20th via Orange Twin Records.

Dreamy Pop from Del Sur

delsurYou thought dreamy bedroom pop music was in the past? Nope, and thank goodness for that, as this song from Del Sur is surely an enjoyable way to wrap up our week with you.  There’s a soft approach to the track, though the guitars kick in and give you that casual sway where you’re not quite sure if your mind’s ready to drift off or get you in dancing mode.  The Philly act will be releasing their HAGS EP on January 27th of next year, so enjoy this gem while you wait for more great hits.

Playful Pop from Anthonie Tonnon

antonieDon’t you miss bouncing bits of pop music that was perfect by the likes of Jens Lekman? Well, meet Anthonie Tonnon, a New Zealand songwriter who seems to have traded in the country’s beloved guitar pop for catchy piano ballads instead.  I love the careful little changes in inflection that appear in and out of this featured track.  It doesn’t hurt either that the song builds towards the inclusion of a chorus to provide backing vocals while Tonnon’s own voice pleasantly yelps in the foreground.  Look for his album Successor to appear on March 3rd via Wild Kindness.

The Pop of Paul Cook & the Chronicles

paulydI’ve long chronicled (see what I did there) the work and career of Paul Cook, and I’m happy to say that I can always find something enjoyable in his work. He’s a trust worthy pop songsmith, so when he passed over his new EP with request to run a new tune, I couldn’t deny him. There’s subtle touches in his work that elevate his songs above your average fare, like the female touches that come through the background during the latter half of this number.  If you like what you hear, his Night Fires EP is available for free HERE.

Introducing Cats of Transnistria

kittiesYou know my adoration for our Finnish friends over at Soliti Music; that’s going to continue as they’ve just signed an incredibly interesting new act, Cats of Transnistria.  The group is essentially a duo, crafting this really ornate soundscape music, weaving vocals in and out, and creating this aesthetic that’s extremely hard to ignore.  This video the band created to accompany their single captures that approach, as it’s merely just a bit more than a gentle breeze that whispers through the flowers and the video’s protagonist; it fits in perfectly with the vocals.  Look for their EP in January.

Nerd Pop from Quarterbacks

qbsThis song’s been all over the Internet the last few days, so why not let your week get wrapped up with this undeniably catchy little bit of pop from Quarterbacks.  At first listen, the vocals imply that the track prescribes to modern jangle-pop touches, but the guitars aren’t quite that clean and angular, allowing for the band to create their own little musical space.  Honestly, the tune reminds me of the music I listened to during my early college years when I was a young uber twee fan, though the band still has tricks up their sleeve with the slow drawn closing. Look for their debut LP on February 10th via Team Love Records.

Touch of the Gaze from The Black Ryder

blackieThere are a ton of artists that have been able to rehash the shoegaze efforts, and some have done it quite well, though my ear thinks that this tune from The Black Ryder is precisely what I think of when I recall the genre.  Guitars craft this huge wall of sound that wraps itself tightly around the dense haze of Aimee Nash’s vocals.  That wall of noise echoes and rings while a deep drum beat pounds in the far off world the band created.  Look for them to release their new effort, The Door Behind the Door, on The Anti Machine Machine on February 24th.

Colleen Green Returns with New Album

clogreenA few years, Colleen Green was a hot commodity; she created quite a buzz rocking things out at SXSW as I remember.  Since then, things have been quiet for her, though I have a feeling that will change, as her new single is already being played left and right.  It’s definitely got that same playfulness that made her so endearing, playing to some distorted guitars that pulse and throb throughout the track.  You know that her new album, I Want to Grow Up, will be filled with infectious singles just like the one below; it comes out on February 24th via Hardly Art.

Brooding Post Rock from Paperhaus

paperThe weather’s been cold and dreary this weekend, so I wanted to kind of get into this week with some tunes that fit the weather patterns of the world.  For me, this Paperhaus tune really summed up the weather, with these nice bits of angular guitar work knifing their way through a feathery vocal that floats through the distance.  I think the reason this song won me over, aside from the obvious of the music, was that the song stretches near 7 minutes, yet it was still able to capture my attention. They’ve got a self-titled effort coming your way in February of next yea, but for now, just enjoy this tune and all its fine moments.

Hear the Soul from Leon Bridges

1012600_643753272386398_1913935258904776815_nNo lie. I would have no idea about Leon Bridges if it weren’t for my friend at GvsB, who turned me onto the sweet sounds of the Ft. Worth songwriter.  Sure, it doesn’t fit into the modern spin of all things indie, but I’m grateful for that; it’s a refreshing sound that I’ve not heard in some time.  It’s a little bit Cody Chestnutt, but a whole lot more Stax.  At the moment, there’s nothing quite like this being spun out there, making the voice and music of Bridges all the more powerful.  Seriously, how can you not appreciate this?
