ATH Free Week Guide

So it’s that time of year again in Austin when all us music nerds get our geek on with a slew of free shows going on.  Thats right folks, it’s free week in Austin!  Now we know that the free shows really began this past weekend, but ATH was nursing a minor hangover from New Years so we missed out on those shows.  We would however like to share our picks for the best show each night of the week going through the upcoming weekend.  Obviously options abound for shows and choosing just ONE show for each night was a tough chore for us.  We just figured that you could see ALL your options on most other sites in town.  We’d recommend Show List Austin or Do512 for all expansive show lists.  Follow the jump for our nightly recommendations.

Wu-Tang Clan @ Emo’s (12/11)

Date 12/11/10
Location Emos
Doors 8pm
Tickets Sold Out!

Saturday night at Emo’s is home to one of the most random lineups I can remember in recent history.  For starters the insane Wu-Tang Clan will be headlining outside with fellow hip-hop acts MC Overlord, Phranchyze, and Riders Against the Storm.  Then the inside stage will feature some of Austin’s hot indie bands in the form of White Denim, The Authors, and Hundred Visions.  I never thought I’d be saying White Denim and Wu-Tang in the same sentence…  Unfortunately tickets are only currently available for the inside stage so maybe you can sneak between the two stages?  My guess is that security will be a little more strict on the big difference in price between the two shows.

Show Preview: Tame Impala @ Emos (12/1)

Date Wednesday, December 1st
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $10 from TicketWeb

Unless you’ve been hiding out this year, you surely are aware of the great storm that has spread concerning Australian group Tame Impala.  Their blend of psychedelic rock with various texturizing layers has won over every single writer here in the States, and deservedly so, as their record, Innerspeaker, is a joy to listen to, track after track after track.  You’ll find the psychedelia, you’ll find 90s alternative, and I hope you see the layering, such as that used on their album cover. As if this wasn’t enough, you also get to catch the group play with Star Death & the White Dwarfs and Kuroma.  If you’re looking for that other worldly musical experience on Wednesday night, then this is where you’ll need to be.

Show Preview: We Are Scientists @ Emos (10/28)

Date Thursday, Oct 28th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $13 from Ticketweb

We like We Are Scientists, and we’re pretty sure that the band is going to put on one hell of a show for you all, but the real reason to get excited has to be the opening band Twin Tigers.  They blew us away at SXSW, and their album. Gray Waves, was about as perfect a debut as you can get.  Their feedback squalls, wrapped tightly around pop sensibility, is sure to give you something to remember.  It’s not often that we fawn over a band, but this is one I’ve been all about, so you can guarantee that I’ll be there in attendance.  Also, Rewards will open up the whole evening, so you have yet another good reason to get yourself to Emos.

Show Preview: The Fresh & Onlys @ Emos (10/27)

Date Wednesday, October 27th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from Ticketweb

On the midweek marquis at Emos this week, you have to come out. There’s no way around it, The Fresh & Onlys are going to be playing.  They just released their new album, Play It Strange, which is surely going to be in our Top 20 of the year, and I can’t get songs like “Waterfalls” out of my head.  Recorded, there definitely is a bit of haze to their sound, but live, they’re an entirely different animal; it’s something you definitely need to see in order to understand.  Also in attendance will be Royal Baths and Rayon Beach, so two more reasons to get out to this show. The touring year is winding down, and this looks to be one of the best shows Austin has left, so don’t miss out!

Show Preview: Ra Ra Riot @ Emos (10/26)

Date Tuesday, October 26th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $15 from Ticketweb

Okay, so everyone will probably be running around town trying to get their hands on this Jonsi character, but I just can’t do it.  I think I’ll pass my time with a little bit of pop tunes, and a nice dose of orchestral touches.  You see, Ra Ra Riot are playing at Emos on the same night.  The band just released The Orchard, their sophomore effort, and while it may seem them trying new ground, it still has a lot of upside, not to mention the band’s great live  potential. Also on the bill are up-and-comers Givers and one of my favorite new groups, Villagers.  This sounds like a more low-key place to be Tuesday night, so get on out there folks.

Deer Tick always seem to be making tons of stops in Austin, and why not with the great tunes they keep pumping out?  The band has yet another Austin show planned at Emo’s tonight with some other solid bands backing them up.  Joining Deer Tick on the stage are J-Roddy Walston and the Business along with local boys Crooks.  Great show for a Wednesday night.
