Show Preview: Hunx and His Punx @ Emos (4/12)

Date Tuesday, April 12th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from TicketWeb

Alright, so I know there is an incredible show going on outside at Emos on the same night featuring the Raveonettes, but the best place for you to be is indoors with Hunx and His Punx.  Hunx just released his latest album, Too Young To Be In Love, which is just chock full of great songs, all reminiscent of early American pop, just with a hint of grime and grit to it.  It’s definitely a show where you can get down, dirty and drunk, not to mention enjoying the whole ordeal.  Also, you’ll get to see some other solid acts, such as Shannon and the Clams and Fungi Girls, both who offer their own blend of refurbished Americana. Whether you have plans or not, $8 is a worthy price for such a great line-up.

Here’s one of those shows that comes around every once in a while that some bloggers only dream about.  On the stage Saturday night at Emo’s is long time ATH favorite band Pains of Being Pure at Heart along with recent blogger favorite Twin Shadow.  I’m sure we’ll be seeing tons of our local music friends there as we all see which band can deliver on their hype.  See you kids at the show.

Show Pictures: Great Nostalgic @ Emo’s (4/2)

On Saturday night, we made our way out to Emo’s for the record release party thrown by our local friends in The Great Nostalgic.  The night turned out to be a success with happenin’ crowds for fellow local and supporting acts Burgess Meredith, One Hundred Flowers, and Royal Forest.  Our dearest friend and photographer Brian Gray also made it out on Saturday to get us some fancy photos from a few of the bands.  These can of course be seen after the jump.

Show Preview: Papercuts @ Emos (4/5)

Date Tuesday, April 5th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $10 @ the Door

If you’ve been following our site, or just the Internet in general, the odds are you’re well aware of Jason Quever and Papercuts.  His control over melodies, as well as his lush arrangements in the studio, have made me a huge fan of everything he does.  He’ll be in town at Emos on Tuesday, supporting the recent release of Fading Parade, and it’s a magnificent album, as you can read HERE. Jason’s a busy fellow, so he doesn’t tour too often, which makes this a must see show, aside from the fact it’s going to be ridiculous anyways.  Also, you can catch another up-and-comer, Banjo or Freakout, who’s been making waves over the last year or so.  Sounds like a pretty decent way to kick off this most excellent April music line-up in Austin.

We here at ATH are such huge fans of Austin band The Great Nostalgic that we’ve almost taken it as our personal mission to help grow their populairty.  With a debut record so forward thinking and creative, it’s been easy to support them as best we can.  This Saturday at Emo’s, the group is celebrating the release of their sophomore effort Hope We Live Like We Promised with a headlining show supported by some other local buzz bands.  Joining GC on stage are Burgess Meredith, One Hundred Flowers, and recent ATH fave Royal Forest.  With a great lineup, cheap door fee, and even cheaper tall boys, you should be there.  We haven’t gotten around to a proper review of the new album yet, but we’ve gotten a snew preview, and can guarantee that it’s going to be a huge leap forward for the band.  Why not pick up a copy at the show?

Hunx and His Punx – Too Young To Be In Love

Rating: ★★★★½

It’s a shame that people tend to associate Hunx and His Punx with some sort of gay punk movement, though he doesn’t do much to do distinguish himself from that image.  However, Too Young To Be in Love is probably one of the most enjoyable releases that should be on everyone’s radar, yet somehow it still seems to be sort of a small blip. Shame on us, as I haven’t had this much fun listening to a record in some time, not to mention the fact that it was produced by one of the Voidoids!

When you jump into “Lovers Lane,” you better be ready to grab a hold of the nearest person to you, swing them in your arms, and spin spin spin.  Hunx has that spoken word delivery you’ve heard from the 50s soundtracks of your parents, then you add in the gentle growl of Shannon Shaw of Shannon and the Clams; you’ll want to play this track at your next barbecue.  And it just walks right into “Hes Coming Back,” which has a similar appeal, but here you’re going to have a bit more of a stomp going on, as the groovy drumming definitely has the toes a tapping.

Perhaps there is an innocent nostalgia in everything Hunx and His Punx does, but that’s precisely why we’re all going to have so much fun listening to this record this year.  Listening to the title track, “Too Young To Be in Love,” you have the absolutely perfect song to close out the night, if your night happens to be some giant hipster-laden prom-type affair.  These are songs where you can roll your window down and tap your fingers to the rhythm on your steering wheel, or perhaps you’d rather just have nice gentle dance around the living room with your significant other while dinner cooks on the stove.  Everything you’ll find on Too Young To Be in Love is full of vibrant tracks that warm your heart, and it would probably do the same for your parents, not to mention their parents.

If you’re looking for faster paced songs, you’re likely to find what your looking for on the latter half of the album, in so far as Hunx can only speed it up so much.  Tracks like “Bad Boy” and “Tonite Tonite” definitely have a more forceful approach to the sheer joy of this record, though there’s an ability to slow it down amidst a heavier footed drummer. As these songs jangle and Shannon adds oohs and ahhs in the background, you’re caught up all over again.  It’s hard, however, to even differentiate these songs from those on the earlier half of the LP, as the whole thing sounds so cohesive, so well put together.

It’s hard to really say who will fall in love with this record, though Hunx and His Punx clearly have made one of the most enjoyable releases of the year.  Perhaps Too Young To Be In Love will get overshadowed as too nostalgic for its own good, or too this or too that.  But, one thing is for sure, you’re not likely to find so many catchy songs lined in a row that are going to make you fell young and innocent all over again, or keep you feeling young if that’s the case. I don’t know, but if this is the gay punk movement, I think it’s time I join.

Show Preview: Lucero @ Emo’s (2/22)

Date 2/22/11
Location Emos
Doors 9pm
Tickets $15 @ Ticketweb

The incredible alt-country rockers known as Lucero are making a stop at Emo’s in Austin Tuesday night.  Joining the guys on stage are Houston country styling band Robert Ellis & The Boys.   Ben Nichols is one of the strongest frontman around, using his combination of booze and passion to compel audiences across the nation.  There’s not a bad thing to say about this band, and if you missed their set at ACL, then you need to make up for it this time around.
