Boyracer Share Ode to Graeme Downes

If you don’t know Graeme Downes, well, I can’t help you there. But, maybe by turning on this new single from Boyracer you’ll be able to get the gist of why the songwriter is held in such high regard…enough to warrant an ode of sorts. Musically, the band have tuned down their energy here, and I mean that in the best way; they’re still manage to have an understated jangle and a sublime rhythm section, but it very much feels like Stew and company have embarked on the ballad route for their latest single. Riley throws in some velvety backing vocals throughout, maximizing the lure of the melodic tootsie roll at the center of the tune. Seaside Riot is out via Emotional Response this Friday!

Persona Share Track from Typical Girls 6 Compilation

A few weeks ago we brought you news that Typical Girls 6 was on its way, premiering the striking new track from Cindy. Today, we’ve got another track from UK outfit Persona, with another powerful performance to entice you grab a copy of the album. This song appeared earlier on the band’s Persona EP, but here we get another chance to celebrate the band’s approach to songwriting. Raquel’s aim is to make something weird, according to the bio, using the guitar in a variety of manners to create a sound that stretches our expectations of what rock n’ roll can truly be. It’s a thoughtful poetic motivation, with the guitar sound gently ticking in the background like a metronome keeping pace for us. Typical Girls 6 will be out this Friday via Emotional Response Records, so grab one before they’re all gone!

Useless Users Announce We Are All

With historical lineage and ties to Sarah Records, you’re likely going to love Useless Users (members of Secret Shine, Action Painting, Even as We Speak), but please don’t go into thinking this is a revisiting of the days of old! Useless Users are onto something new, something a little more dedicated towards a denser realm of pop music. The opening track on the band’s debut creeps along, bubbling bass working over sharp little beats; the vocals have this ghostly aura, with guitars ringing about behind it. While the opener exudes patience, the group still maintain their murkier edges while pushing a bit of a pace, as you see on “I Am Forton Wreck;” this is likely where folks are giving the band early Pulp nods! What I’m hearing is a bunch of great tunes, written by songwriters I already loved, so I expect We Are All to fulfill my wildest dreams; it drops on July 3rd via Emotional Response Records.

Boyracer Announce Assuaged LP

You think Boyracer plan to slow down? Absolutely not! The band return with a brand new record this year; Assuaged will be released by Stewart’s own label Emotional Response. Our first listen has the band brandishing their noisy elements and coiling them around a nice little bubblegum pop core, ready to spring exuberant hooks on unassuming fans. Stew gets the perfect foil here from bandmate Christina Riley, tossing in some supporting harmonies to give the melody a little more buoyancy. For me, the star of the show, however is the drum work; it’s so sharp and helps keep the song rambunctious and fun all at once. Assuaged drops on July 5th!

Tape Waves Share Invisible Lines Video

I think one of the things I love about listening to Tape Waves is how safe (no-frills, comforting, etc) their brand of dream pop is, meaning that in the best way! You get folks over indulging in beats, or minimizing the strum of a guitar, and maybe even sometimes coating the vocals in too much of a studio wash. But here, as you can hear with their latest single, Tape Waves don’t need to employ any of those little textures; their songs succeed on their own merit. And, you can hear light guitar strums, steady drum bounce, and Kim’s wonderful voice fitting right into it all; they’ve managed to balance in such a way that you might even just call normalize it by calling it some of the best pop music all around. Good songs supersede technological studio tricks, in my mind anyways. Plus, the video’s adorable, featuring cats, ice cream and a couple going through their record collection! Bright is out soon via Emotional Response!

Tape Waves Sign with Emotional Response and Announce Bright LP

I’ve been covering Tape Waves since their earliest days on Bleeding Gold Records, so its great to hear that the band have signed up with one of our favorite labels Emotional Response for their next LP. And, because you can’t really announce a new record without a single, they’ve thrown us one of those to boot! The song’s got this steady rhythmic bounce to it, giving the song a sturdy background that enables Kim and Jarod to craft the perfect slice of Friday dream pop. Kim’s voice are perfectly softened against the crystalline guitars sparkling behind her; this feels like a very Sarah adjacent pop sound, along the lines of early Heavenly or recent acts like Luxembourg Signal. Some sharpened guitar chords dance about in the song’s middle, giving a nice dose of joy to the listener as the tune fades to a close. Look for Bright on June 4th!

New Stuff from Emotional Response Records

One of our favorite DIY labels, Emotional Response, has some great stuff popping up tomorrow, so we wanted to point you in their direction before you headed off into the weekend on your own. The first of those releases is Mystic Hotline from San Francisco’s Latitude. I won’t lie to you; I can’t help but to think about the Go-Gos “Vacation” when I listen to this group, and mind you, I don’t see that as a bad thing at all. On the release page, they allude to a darker mood pervading the LP, which seems to align with the world right now. The other release from the label is a Best of Collection from the Bachelor Pad titled All Hash and Cock. If you give a listen to the available tracks, you’ll see the band straddling the lines of old school punk and the noisier side of underground pop…which comes as no surprise considering the label’s ties to Boyracer. So, at the very least, streams the LPs tomorrow, grab them HERE, and sample them below!

Seablite Share Another Song from High Rise Mannequins

Don’t act like we haven’t been hyping up Seablite over the last year or so, and don’t act surprised when I throw another tune your way from the group! I love the latest recording; the band’s trademark fuzz is buried really deep here; still feels like your speakers are broken, but allows for the diamond to come out of the rough. And, boy, does it ever! The vocals come and rise to this sort of crystalline pinnacle, shining at the top of the cymbal crashes and rolling fuzz from beneath. They’re just keeping at the great tunes here. Look for High Rise Mannequins via Meritorio Records and Emotional Response on February 21st.

Emotional Response Announce Typical Girls Vol. 5

Every year, Emotional Response brings us a collection of the best female led punk and indie, with a nod to the Slits in the compilation’s title, Typical Girls. Today we bring you news of Volume 5 with a great track from Color TV; it’s a pop rock gem heavy on hooks, with a huge chorus that’s destined to find itself engrained in your brain for the rest of the day. The rest of the compilation bounces around the globe bringing hits from the likes of Spain’s Linda Guilala, Australia’s Slag Queens and Scotland’s Vital Idles…not to mention about 12 other acts you should have on your regular rotation. Typical Girls Volume 5 will be out via Emotional Response on February 21st.

Seablite Announce Brand New EP

Last year was a really big year for Seablite; their album Grass Stains and Novocaine broke through a crowded landscape to find its way onto Good Morning America’s Top 50 LPs of 2019. Still, they’re not resting on those successes, returning with a brand new 10″ EP for Emotional Response. Kicking in with a trademark bit of fuzz, the song jumps right in with a jangling buzz and shimmy, giving you some noise that will let you tap your toes too! The vocals are really gentle, almost just riding out the edge of the feedback; I think the chorus is really really special, building on the natural warmth and pushing it further by curling the notes around little guitar stabs. This band is on an incredible roll, so be sure to get acquainted with them now. High Rise Mannequins will be out on February 21st.
