Kal Marks Shares A Functional Earth

When you press play on the new Kal Marks tune, you’re going to feel a little bit anxious; there’s this echoing bit of distorted guitars that just pulses in the background, sort of in and out and in and out, all the while the front of the mix offers this primal rock groove. It feels like there’s impending doom headed our way, which is actually the point, as the song takes on the subject matter of humanity’s current damnation. And although that groove feels stationary, a repeat listen will show you peaking just as the song does, rushing into this chaotic jam that seemingly celebrates all that the world, and the tune, have to offer. Dig into this, and look for Wasteland Baby, out on September 13th via Exploding In Sound.

Sour Widows Share Staring Into Heaven/Shining

The forthcoming Revival A Friend is definitely on my list of records I’m looking forward to hearing in their entirety, and I’m glad there’s another Sour Widows musical sample to keep our eyes on the prize. This one is a musical journey unto itself, with the tune trickling in at the beginning; the vocals work quietly over a gentle guitar line, emotionally attaching the band and the listener as one. They carry you close, occasionally adding heavier work on the cymbals and riffs to punch up the volume, then pull us all back with a faint musical whisper. Then it all explodes, taking all the nuances and turning them into one broad moment of sweeping rock and roll that breaks into a jam for a few minutes. Explorative and rocking, just as I like it. Revival of a Friend is out June 28th via Exploding in Sound.

Mandy Shares Forsythia

Being a fan of Miranda Winters other gig, Melkbelly, is not a requirement to enjoy her new project, Mandy. What you will need, however, is a thirst for huge riffs and soaring melodies; they’re plentiful in the latest single from the forthcoming Lawn Girl LP. Those distorted waves of guitar noise greet you from the get go, and they continue to climb and crash against you time and time again. The necessary hook for repeat enjoyment (which you will have!) is definitely part of Winters’ vocal delivery; I enjoy the way her voice climbs up then drops back down in each little verse. This record’s going to rip, so turn up this tune and grab a copy from Exploding in Sound before the April 26th release date.

Washer Drop Fresh Single

After dropping Improved Means to Deteriorated Ends, I’ll admit, I wasn’t quite expecting Washer to jump right back and deliver new music, but here they are with fresh single for your ears! There’s something about the songwriting on this tune that feels like a mid90s rocker, hinting at grungy riffs but pushing more towards a kind of college rock feel. There’s a certain indifference in their approach, just selling these crunchy riffs that blast through the speakers while the vocals carry this biting cool; when they let loose at the end it just feels like the band are fully embracing the fun and joy of playing together. This single brought to you courtesy of Exploding in Sound.

Prewn Shares Another Track from Through the Window

Admittedly, Prewn was not an act on my radar until they signed with Exploding in Sound for their forthcoming Through the Window LP. But, as soon as I heard Izzy Hagerup’s voice, I was mesmerized; there was something so distinctively haunting that I couldn’t get it out of my head. Now the latest single provides that same emotion, her voice rising and falling brilliantly from with the confines of the stripped down approach. While the tune has this cavernous feel, it eventually erupts into this cacophonous world of explorative folk that bends and turns as Hagerup puts her voice on full display. Look for the release to drop on August 25th.

Prewn Share Perfect World Single

The power of a voice can sometimes be the only gift you need, which is where I think I first entered my adoration for Prewn and their singer Izzy Hagerup. At times, the voice is smoky and brimming with emotion, yet pulling your ear closer and you hear the fragility and the slight quiver in her delivery; the mixture of the two absolutely sucked me deep into this “Perfect World.” That said, the arrangements that encircle that moving voice do it justice, filling in the space behind just enough to lead us to the musical promised land; you get bending little guitar lines and light percussive tambourine jangles…so if you have a heart, you’re going to be moved here. Look for Prewn to drop Through the Window on August 25th via Exploding in Sound Records.

Ovlov Return with Buds LP

Are they together? Are they not? Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter, as we should also just sit back and appreciate that Ovlov have announced a brand new EP. To me, the band always sound like what J Mascis has been chasing for years, stirring up a pot of melody and noise, but with a DIY attitude. You get these matter-of-fact lyrics here, delivered almost haphazardly, like a private conversation, which steadies the song. But, what’s always appealing about an Ovlov tune is that they manage to kind of create this storm around that sense of calm, not unlike some cliche hurricane analogy; everything is bringing destruction, except, of course, those vocals. Buds sounds like a ripper and it’ll be out on November 19th via Exploding in Sound Records.

Smile Machine Shares Shit Apple

If you’re a fan of juxtaposed sounds, then you’re going to love Smile Machine; I think the very band name hints at what you’re getting here, mentioning the warmth of a smile and the metallic vision of a machine. Musically, you get this crash of noisy guitar work and crashing cymbals, rumbling, almost as if you’re ripped the cones of your speakers. Beneath it all is the voice of Jordyn Blakely, offering up these quiet melodic whisperings that are barely able to billow through the wall of noise. Two great sounds crashing into one glorious moment of rock n’ roll. And, as if it wasn’t obvious enough, Smile Machine will release Bye For Now on the appropriate home, Exploding in Sound Records.

Dig Nitty Share Lomita

Brooklyn’s Dig Nitty have something really special going on here, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t give the band’s first single a little shout out. Musically, this song offers a sort of casual mesh of surf and garage rock; guitars just on the border of jangling, ringing out as the rhythm section gives the track a nice little bounce. Of course, you’ll also hear a dreamy wash coating the track, mostly due to the soothing voice of Erin McGrath; she initially formed the band with Reggie Bender after the two met working at Shea Stadium. This little ditty is worthy of the two minutes you’ll spend steaming below. Their debut LP Reverse of Mastery will be out via Exploding in Sound on July 24th.

Soft Pop from Water From Your Eyes

Friday’s are all about reflection, soft tunes that really drive things home the joy of kicking off your shoes and relaxing, just like this smooth pop number from Water From Your Eyes. The band’s latest single/video is all about this natural inclination towards movement; you can feel the song pushing you (and itself) forward as the rhythm pulses. Rachel Brown’s softened vocals give a nice textural balance to the tune, turning the song into a melodious affair worthy of countless weekend listens. The project releases Somebody Else’s Song on October 25th via Exploding in Sound Records.
