Last Week’s Jams (9.9 – 9.13)

Seemed like a strange week for some reason, but there were some definitely tunes that just broke my heart, in the best way possible. I continue to be impressed by Merce Lemon‘s new stuff, and “Crow” was just a beast. Porridge Radio, too, offered up a song that just wanted to shatter spirits, though if that’s the case, I won’t mind one bit. Alas, there was some pop in the week, like the new record from Young Scum and new single from Jim Nothing. Plus, old favorites the New Tigers are back, as is Germany’s Roller Derby. Indulge yourselves by pressing play below, but be sure to start with the powerhouse hit from The Wickies.

Fascinations Grand Chorus Share Summer Love

While the Summer season may be drawing to its close (please God please!), it looks as if Fascinations Grand Chorus are yet to give up on the dream, as today, they drop a brand new EP brimming with sunshine and warmth that will hold you over through Winter. It’s a nostalgic sound, one that sees the group really hitting on traditional harmonies and sonic vibes that would make Brian Wilson proud. Still, they spin the entirety of their style through a modern indiepop lens, giving it the slightest playfulness that almost feels like they’re giving the fans a little wink as they dance down the beach! Give Summer Love a listen!

Another Tune from Fascinations Grand Chorus

Tomorrow we’ll all get to hear the Anglesea EP in full, but for now we get another tease with the title track from the new EP from Fascinations Grand Chorus. While the first single had an almost doo-wop vibe to it, this track holds a more cavernous vibe. Drums working over synths provide a darkened vision, carefully manipulated as the vocals rise from the depths of the mix; it kind of reminds me of some Karen O. I love how the duo drag their tunes beyond the three minute mark, allowing plenty of room for sonic exploration. Look for the new EP tomorrow!

Upbeat Number from Fascinations Grand Chorus

Fascinations Grand Chorus have a full-length in the works, but in the meantime they wanted to drop a little EP for your pleasure. “When You’re Mine” looks back at classic pop music with Stephanie coming across like the best of the doc-wop era. That being said, the keyboard line that drives this song is catchy as all get out, and really sets the tone for the track. Sure, the song’s lighthearted, but the depth of the studio work illustrates that they’ll surely be more than a one-trick pony. Indulge your sweet tooth with this one; look for the Anglesea EP on December 8th via Silent Stereo.

Groovy R&B from Fascinations Grand Chorus

fascinationsMan, I’m really stuck on listening to Fascinations Grand Chorus. It reminds me a lot of old school Shannon/Clams, though this one seems to have more of a nostalgic R&B vibe, as opposed to the garage feel. In the end, that leaves it with a supreme pop sensibility; this is the sort of hit you wish they played at your middle school dance…or at least I do. The soloing guitar at the back half of the track is a nice little touch to, before bringing back the chorus. Look for their debut EP on Silent Stereo Records in the coming months.

New Music from Fascinations Grand Chorus

fascinationsFascinations Grand Chorus is two players, Stephanie and Andrew. They use keyboards and drums to craft their sound. That being said, this isn’t a Mates of State redux; it’s a construction of pop structures taking nods to punk rock and psychedelia. All that being said, I’m really stuck on the emphatic vocal performance of Stephanie on this song; she’s playful yet pitch-perfect. This is our first listen to the band since announcing their debut self-titled EP, and it’s a bright start that promises more great things to come from the band in the future. Listen up.
