Unless you are living under some sort of large rock, you should be fully aware that Levitation Festival started last night in the ATX. We saw many of you out and about and look forward to more moments of tunes and fun as the weekend progresses. Levitation Festival kicks off on Thursday here in Austin with a great lineup of bands coming into town for shows going down all over downtown. It should be another good time to catch up with some old palls while hopping between venues near and around Red River. As things are now just a few days away, we’ll try to sneak in a couple more of these interviews before you head out the door. Today now marks just one short week away from Levitation Festival kicking off in downtown Austin on Halloween night and running through the weekend. We rather enjoy these quick snapshots of bands coming into town and we hope you also appreciate the exposure to artists you maybe weren’t aware of, or didn’t know so much about. Continuing this fun project is the absolute legendary Acid Mothers Temple. We feel very fortunate to have such a powerhouse participate in our nonsense. #blessed More after the jump.
Wow, hard to believe that we are already about to roll into November and it is once again time for Levitation Festival in Austin. Now this crew stands with the opinion that this is the best fest in town as we love the peeps who put it on, dig the venues, and generally vibe with the bands on the bill. This year is no different as our hype builds and things look to set off in downtown next week. We would of course fail at life if we didn’t try to prep you in some way so a few Levitation “Getting to Know You” interviews seems like a fitting kick off. Also more fitting, is getting to jumpstart this thing with one of my top bands of the entire weekend – Pissed Jeans. Hit the jump for band insights, tunes and set times.

We’re big fans, and were bummed when they left our city to venture off to greener pastures, but it seems to have worked out well for the music. After an excellent debut LP, Andy Pastalaniec’s Chime School are returning this summer with what many already consider an album of the year contender, particularly in the indiepop circles. We’ve already heard some great singles, like the personal favorite, “Wandering Song,” so we reached out to Andy to catch up, grab some insight, then learn about making vegan chili. As we continue our Rock n’ Recipes feature, we wanted to reach out to our old friend R.E. Seraphin, who has connections all the way to one of the earliest ATH Records releases (Mean Jolene!). A little over a month ago, his project released their new album, Fool’s Mate, so we reached out to Ray to talk about influences, the recording process and more. Hopefully you took our suggestion last week when we encouraged you to give a listen to Who Does the Music Love, the debut LP from Outer World. Members of the group have been playing in other acts we’ve enjoyed (Dahlia Seed/Positive No!), so we reached out to Kenneth and Tracy to see if they could give us some insight into their LP. Plus, as an avid coffee enthusiast, with a slight sweet tooth, I was excited to get the recipe for their “Coffee Surprise,” which can easily be replicated at your home! Well, we did it folks. We made it through another year. Your ATH crew was busy as ever, posting well over 1,000 songs this year(!!!), sharing album reviews, and covering local events throughout Austin. As we wrap our FIFTEENTH year doing our thing, it’s also of course that time to share our top tunes from the past 12 months. Now remember, we often post 4-6 songs every single day, so this was a tough list to preen and edit before settling on the top 150 from the year. In my totally accurate math, this is about 10% of everything we covered this year! After the jump you can find a full list of all the songs plus playlists for you to take along with you.
Honestly, I thought about foregoing a year-end list this year. I mean, if you read our site, you know what we love. But, list making can be fun, especially if you really really love music. My criteria was simple, and not based on what I think is “best,” but rather looking at the stuff I listened to the most, and eventually bought (or was gifted). Popular locals for my Nathan Wrapped have me living on an island in between San Francisco and Australia; label of the year would be Trouble in Mind (congrats to Bill and family!); genre would be: most awesome. Again, this is one man’s personal tastes, take it for what its worth.
