As previously reported, our pal Peter Matthew Bauer has a new solo album called Flowers coming out next month via Bauer’s own indie label Fortune Tellers. Prior to that much anticipated release date, I am beyond excited to share a new single with you today along with a few quick questions Peter was kind enough to answer the other day. We talk about what it’s like making music as a solo musician, how life is getting back to normal (sort of), and what new music he’s been into recently. Premiere: Peter Matthew Bauer Shares Miracles

Though the demise of the mighty Walkmen broke hearts here in the ATH offices, we’ve loved all the impressive material coming from the band’s members since the break up. Peter Matthew Bauer, former guitar player and songwriter for The Walkmen, has offered two delightful LPs since his band’s demise with Liberation! from 2014 and Mount Qaf from 2017. Here in the present, Bauer has prepped another new LP entitled Flowers slated for a release on September 23rd via Fortune Tellers Music. Prior to the full release, we’ve been given the sheer pleasure of dropping Bauer’s latest single “Miracles” for all you fans to consume and enjoy. The progression and production of this stellar tune is some of the best I’ve heard in quite some time. We’ve got the single along with a quote about the track from Peter after the jump.

Slumberland Annouce Last Singles of the SLR30 Series

It’s been a gift that continues to give me things I love, with Slumberland’s SLR30 Series wrapping up with its final singles on December 4th! It looks as if we’re going out with a bang, with one 7″ from UK’s Flowers and the other a new 7″ from one of my personal favorites, Neutrals! We’re treated to the A-Sides for both singles, and man, pretty sure we all win with these being added to the fold. The Flowers track is more powerful than I remember the band from some of their earlier releases, though it still hones in on the band’s penchant for melodic pop. Neutrals on the other hand do what they do best, buzzing through 2 minutes with infectious power pop punk; I think this might be the best recording from the band, with Allan’s voice spitting the lines out with this incredible sharpness. We’ve already brought you a tune or two from the forthcoming Milky Wimpshake LP, their first since 2015, but I couldn’t miss out on a chance to give you a heads up that Rachel from Flowers is also featured on a few occasions. If you’re grabbing the record, as you should, you’ll find the opener, featured below, has her voice paired perfectly with the band; the song’s full of swaggering pop rock…the infectious sort of course. I love how they mute the rock in the opening verses to let the vocal harmonies shine together, before pushing down on the pedals and letting loose. The chugga-chugga riffs of the chorus are perfect slices of rock n’ roll…I just want to play this song all the damn day long! Bobo Integral will release Confessions of an English Marxist on October 16th.

Flowers Drop a Million Ideas

What exactly is this new release from Flowers? Well, it seems to be about 70 demos the group have recorded, perhaps while working on a brand new triple LP? One can only guess, but one thing we do get to enjoy as indiepop fans is a slice of the band’s delectable sound, over and over again. I’ve spent my morning thumbing through the various entries; it’s like an indiepop ADHD journey, bouncing between upbeat and melodic slowpop, enchanting all the while. Whatever day it is, it’s never bad time to let Flowers take you away…and you can have it all for the NYP special on Bandcamp HERE.

New Music from Mary Bryce

Mary Bryce has impressed us over the last several years, most recently with his band Smiile. But, she’s now ready to step out for a solo outing, and we’ve got a track for you to familiarize yourself with her songwriting. Immediately, you’ll notice the power of her voice; it has this huge range without seeming forced. The string arrangements accompanying the central piano passage are quite stunning, perfectly accenting Bryce’s voice as she stretches her pipes into the soulful closing in the song’s latter half…akin to the work of Amber Kauffman. Have at it kids.

Flowers Release Last Single Ever on Fortuna Pop

No. Flowers are not breaking up. But, with their new 7″ single, Fortuna Pop will finally close its doors and move on to greener pastures. Sadly, we might not find a finer purveyor of pop, but we’ll always have the memories. The label, in my eyes, goes out with a bang, dropping two Flowers tracks that are memorable as ever. The first tune has a bubbly underbelly, while the latter track has a juxtaposed softness to it…all illustrating just how glorious the band is. Enjoy the tracks below, and fall in love, for the last time, with Fortuna Pop.

Honeyrude Drop New Single

For all the great music in Austin, our shoegaze game has been hit or miss. I mean, we have the ridiculously solid Grivo, but now we’ve also got Honeyrude. The band dropped another new single from their forthcoming The Color Blue LP, and it’s shimmering guitar tsunami to open up the song is perfect for shoegaze and dream pop fans alike. Jess Ledbetter’s voice brings about a softness that allows for a calming beauty. Be sure to stick around for the song’s latter half, filled with guitar excursions and fading vocals. Look for the new LP via Shifting Sounds on August 18th.
