ACL Interviews: Fool’s Gold

In our continued goal to bring you as much pre-ACL coverage as possible, we bring you our second interview of the festival season from L.A. based indie-pop group Fool’s Gold.  We’ve been following these guys since their inception, and have particularly enjoyed their new album Leave No Trace. Leading up to their appearance at ACL in a couple weeks, we sat down with Fool’s Gold front man Luke Top to ask him about his band’s tunes.  Follow the jump for full interview.

New Tune from Foreign Born (amidst hiatus)

Sad news coming our way as Foreign Born have decided to turn their focus elsewhere, at least for the time being.  I thoroughly loved their record, Person to Person, so I’m sad to see them take a break, but they do have other projects to focus on, such as Fools Gold.  Fortunately, before they head off into the California sun, they’ve left us with a brand new track to enjoy.  Sadly, it only makes me wish all the more that they wouldn’t hang things up just yet, as they clearly have some brilliant stuff left to accomplish.

New Track from Vetiver

Seeing as we’re huge fans of Sub Pop, we’ve known this one was coming for sometime, but we hadn’t gotten a chance to hear anything new. Then today out comes “Can’t You Tell,” the first single from the new Vetiver record, The Errant Charm, coming to you on June 14th.  This song has less of a traditional feel for the band, adding a little bit of bounce in their step, at least in comparison to their folk stylings on past efforts.  Similar to bands like the Fruit Bats or Foreign Born, they’ve added a bit of a pop element, perhaps seeking out a happier vibe for us all. Give this one a listen.

2009 Top 50 Albums

bestof2009cover_albums

Creating a Top 50 Albums list is never easy.  You have to battle with what you think the world believes, and what you truly believe in your heart, to be solid jams.  We have even more trouble because we have to three writers, all who have different ideas, and we have to make those ideas fit into a neat box.  Well, we got it done, and honestly, our criteria was based on two things: how great we thought the album was, artistically speaking, and how long we listened to it without getting bored.  That’s it. It’s fool proof; you might not like it, but it’s our list, so here it is… Read more

FT50: Songs of 2009

bestof2009cover_songsWe have to start this list off with a disclaimer.  We have three writers, all with different tastes, so the list should reflect that a little bit.  Also, these are our opinions, and by no means, are they meant to be seen as an “end all be all” to the question of what were the best songs of 2009.  That being said, we like our list quite a bit.  Sure, it’s got some expected numbers at the top, but the rest of the list is genius.  We’ve got some of the songs streaming for you, and the rest take you straight to youtube.  Follow the jump for full list.

7/19 – Foreign Born/The Veils @ Mohawk

og_v_fb_06Sunday night wrapped up a rather moderate week of live music in Austin, but let’s not forget that we’ve had a pretty awesome summer of live music. Fortunately for us at ATH, we were able to catch Foreign Born, The Veils and Other Girls at The Mohawk on Sunday night, just after we did our best to pretend to be entertained by the Anarchy Wrestling Tour outside of the Mohawk. You can’t argue with $1 Pabst or good tunes. Follow the jump for our take on the show and a few snapshots.

FT5 – 2009 Jams of the Summer

0626top5coverWe’re right in the beginning of summer, as we can all tell by the ridiculous heat has been beating down upon us.  For us, we just sit around all day listening to sweet tunes, hoping that we can create the perfect playlists for our long drives to nowhere.  As per usual, we think we’ve provided you with a list of songs that are destined to have you turning up your stereo as you drive through the hill country or maybe you just want to throw them on during your barbecue.  Regardless, these are our jams of the summer.

Fool’s Gold

foolsgoldNo not that terrible movie with Kate HudsonFool’s Gold is a brand new collective/band hailing from the big city of Los Angeles.  We call the band a collective because it started out as more of a side project of sorts and has since moved into a huge band full of artists with mixed musical influences.  You’ll find members of Foreign Born, a former We Are Scientists drummer, a member of The Fall, and tons of other talented musicians.  You can expect debut self-titled full length from the band September 29th via IAMSOUND Records.

More New Music From Foreign Born

foreignborn1Not long ago, we dropped a new single your way called “Vacationing People” by L.A. band Foreign Born.  Now we’ve got another new song from the band’s upcoming album entitled “Earl Warnings”.  Both of these new tracks are creating a lot of positive buzz about the new album in the ATH offices.  You can pick up Person to Person June 23rd via Secretly Canadian.   You can also catch a live session by the band in July when they make a stop at Mohawk .  Stay tuned for more deets on that closer to the actual date.
