Austin Spotlight: Empire Machines

1601277_725410277513549_9198015871024763830_nWith the insane amount of bands in our great little city, it’s never truly shocking that I’m finding promising up and coming bands all the time.  Somehow I had never really listened to Empire Machines despite seeing their name from time to time on some local bills.  After reaching out to me recently, I gave a listen to their new EP and am rather pleased with the discovery.  Below you can check out that new EP entitled Animal Skin.  Waiting for you within is what might be one of Austin’s best kept secrets in the indie rock scene.  You’ll get a bit of heavy distortion, enchanting melodies and one of the better rhythm sections I’ve heard in quite some time.  Opening and title track “Animal Skin” hits super hard and will grab your attention as you make your way through an engaging and rocking 3 tracker.

Say hi to Empire Machines on facebook or stream more of their music over on bandcamp.  Stay tuned for more news from the band.

Upbeat Tune from Painted Palms + Free EP

paintedpalmsWe’ve covered Painted Palms before, and now we’ve all got even more reason to celebrate, as the group has just put up the FREE Nothing Lasts Long EP for your ears.  According to our sources, the story behind the release was for the duo to experiment with the worlds where psychedelia and electronica collide; they even intended to create is as a mixtape of sorts.  I’m really digging this tune below, with a really solid groove that grabs you from the get go.  You can grab yourself this rad little EP HERE.

New Beauty From Eric & Magill

EricMagillUmbrellaBandPhotoFinal.152750

I’ve played this song “Tangled Up in Nets” by Eric & Magill several times on repeat at this point and I can’t seem to get enough of it.  The variety of instruments being played on the track that somehow come together in a really beautiful way is part of why I dig it so much.  Then this amazingly unique female voice provided by Heidi Spencer comes in to tie it all together and make the song that much better.  To summarize, I think this song rules and you should think the same.

If you’re into it like you should be, mark your calendars for February 19th as the band will be releasing a new EP entitled Two Travellers for free on their bandcamp page.

Killer Pop Tunes from Zebra Hunt

You’ve gotta depend on your Internet friends when it comes to discovering the scene across the country, so I’m glad Toby over at Finest Kiss in Seattle turned me onto this band Zebra Hunt. The three-piece outright definitely has some Oceanic hints in their works, but I also see a modern bent in the recording process, allowing for the central melody to really burst through here. They’ve got a short little EP that you can download for free over at their BANDCAMP page, and I promise you’ll be spending the rest of your day listening to these three gems.  Have fun here folks.

Free EP from 1, 2, 3

Now, for those of you who’ve listened to us and given some attention to 1, 2, 3 especially THIS song, you might be surprised by what you hear on this Free EP.  Gone are the peppy elements you usually associate with the band, but there’s a reason for that.  Member Nic originally composed this EP for his niece as a beautiful little piece for her to use when drifting off at night.  Thus, the extreme tempo changes on this, but don’t just discard this post because you want more of the same; there’s a wonderful sound waiting on Dreamland Pt. 1, waiting to carry you into your own REM sleep.  And hey, it’s a nice little gift for fans of all things free, so head HERE to get your hands on it; sample a track below to boot!

Free EP from Generationals

Surely you know of our love over here for Generationals, as we’ve raved about the band for some time now.  If you haven’t caught on to them, go get yourself a copy of their most recent, Actor Caster, and you’ll no doubt be having a good time.  The good folks over at Park the Van are offering up a new EP from the group, featuring a few remixes and a new tune.  The best part? It’s all free. All you have to do is head HERE, and the EP is yours for free.  Who doesn’t enjoy free music, especially when it’s from a great band.

New (Free) Tunes from Scott Orr

This Canadian fellow has been doing the indie folk thing for some time now, but he wanted to strip it down a bit more.  Scott Orr has just released a free Acoustic EP, which has a few new tracks, and some old ones done in a super-stripped down manner.  One of the things I like the most about this new EP is that he vowed to just do it in his own style, with very few overdubs and retakes in the recording process.  Just giving it a listen lets you see that such an approach gives it an extremely personal quality, which never hurts anyone, now does it?  If you dig this, you can grab the EP HERE.

Free EP from Guards

We all love free tunes, so you can’t really turn away from this great new band, Guards.  Their sound is a bit of lo-fi, but they definitely do their part to include a bit of strong melody in those tracks.  The self-titled EP from the band has seven tracks, and each one has a bit of a different spin than the preceding number, so you don’t get bogged down in monotony.  Definitely give this group a try.
