MIEN Announce Evil People

I love a good supergroup, especially when its made up acts we already love…and bonus points if it features Austin folks. So, here’s MIEN, which features members of Black Angels, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Elephant Stone and Earlies…all who’ve been regulars here, and now they’ve got a new album, Evil People. This new single is like a proto-psych; it’s filled with these pulsing notes and shattering guitar squalls, yet just as I thought the tune was pigeon-holed, they mix it up and move into different territory after the two minute mark, taking on a melodic moment to let the song breathe and open up. Looking forward to seeing where this album goes; MIIEN comes out on April 18th via Fuzz Club.

Circling Back on SKLOSS

Amidst the hubbub of last week, I neglected to highlight this new single from Austin’s SKLOSS. The brooding nature and slow build are one of the core elements of their new LP that makes their debut LP so gratifying; if you’re wont for immediacy and easy hooks, skip on my friends. Karen’s vocals provide this ghostly echo, all the while she’s pummeling the kit. Sandy’s on fire for his part, letting those riffs flow with this natural doom sentiment that crashes in waves against the speakers. I mean, watch the video and you’ll see how emphatic noise can wake the elderly! Their debut, The Pattern Speaks, hits on March 7th via Fuzz Club.

The Men Drop PO Box 96

I’ll admit, as much as we loved Open Your Heart and the early works of the Men, I sometimes need a reminder of how rad their entire catalog is, like when they drop a new ripper right into my lap. This new single is an immediate screamer, kind of barreling down the highway with this bravado and attitude that’s reminiscent of New York Dolls, only amped up with a bit of anger and spite. Maybe they’re angry at me forgetting how fucking rad they can be? I’m not sure, but I do know that Buyer Beware is definitely on my list of anticipated records for this February; it drops on the 28th via Fuzz Club.

Black Doldrums Deliver Another Hit

London based Black Doldrums came onto my musical radar last month with the fuzzed out, post punk single “Hideaway.” As many know, once a band gets on my radar, I tend to save all new singles and albums as they come in. Such is the case with this new single “Summer Breeze,” which offers a hint of brightness underneath the sort of dark wave sound I originally vibed with. You’ll find lots to like here.

Black Doldrums Drop Hideaway

Dang if London based label Fuzz club hasn’t been dropping some serious heat recently as purveyors and curators of modern, fuzzy psych rock. Continuing with the string of modern gems in the label’s catalogue is this dark wave psych number called “Hideaway” from fellow London risers Black Doldrums. I am personally loving the play here on what some might consider a fuzzed up, psych sound with a gnarly, darker, post-punk type vibe. For me, it creates something all together unique and fresh in the genre.

Obligatory Jesus and Mary Chain New Album Post

Admittedly, there’s probably not much more to the story of JAMC that I can personally add, other than I’ve enjoyed the band the four times I’ve caught them after their most recent resurgence. They’ve got 40 years of rock n’ roll under their belts, and now, they’ve got a brand new album to go along with it! The opening minute or so of the record’s first single has a very British feel to it, somewhere in the cool waters between Blur and Spiritualized (or Spacemen 3 if we’re looking to avoid anachronisms). But, then the band makes it entirely their own, dropping in those trademark heavy guitar walls. As the tune builds, the song’s title gets repeated, giving off this rhythmic pattern that locks the vocals in step with the groove. Glasgow Eyes drops on March 8th via Fuzz Club!

Daiistar Share Another Single from Good Time

I’m really interested to hear what Daiistar‘s debut album sounds like; they’ve been toying with me on every single they’ve dropped. Sure, they’re all in the same realm…psych, dream pop, shoegaze, but they’ve added in some layers to mix the tunes, which, for now, is keeping me on my musical toes. Plus, it’s all been really good, so you can’t argue with that start. This latest track from Good Time feels a bit like if Brian Jonestown just went off the deep-end into a sort of heavier realm; you can feel the weight of the guitars as the track swallows you up. Slow pacing only builds some solid tension, yet it never quite gets released, jamming out on the edges of dream pop as the song draws to a close. Fuzz Club will release Good Time on September 8th.

One More From Night Beats

Well unless you just straight up don’t read about the new tunes on our site, I’m sure you’ve seen my fandom around the upcoming LP from Danny Blackwell and his LA based project Night Beats. If you did miss it, go back and check out the albums lead banger “Hot Ghee,” the psych trip of “Thank You,” and the groovy one “Nightmare.” Once you’re done there, come on back for the last preview of the new album with this slow R&B melody of “Blue.” Hit play and melt into the beats.

All of these new tracks will appear on the new Night Beats album Rajan which is due out this Friday the 14th via Suicide Squeeze/Fuzz Club.

Daiistar Announce Debut LP

To be quite honest, the whole reemergence of psychedelia has worn a little thin; I mean, it’s such a specific sound, it’s got to have incredible songwriting to really stay the test of time. But, Austin’s Daiistar are flirting with mixing in other elements, especially when you turn on the opening seconds of their new “Star Starter” single; it takes on a bit of that old-school neo-psychedelia, adding an element that almost feels like its hitting on those Happy Mondays notes. Don’t worry though, there’s still tons of fuzz and squalling guitars, but that rhythm section gives it this dancefloor feel that illustrates the group pushing the expectations of Austin’s psych scene. The group will release Good Time, their debut, via Fuzz Club this September.

One more jam from Night Beats

It seems like this new album from Danny Lee Blackwell and his project known as Night Beats is going to be one of the surprise gems of the summer. Having already shared two hits with “Hot Ghee” back in April and “Thank You” last month, my buzz and excitement was already building. Now getting yet another jam today with this new track, “Nightmare,” I can definitely confirm that the new album is going to be a psych-rock meets disco, meets bee-bop banger, from start to finish.

The new Night Beats album Rajan is due out on July 14th via Suicide Squeeze and Fuzz Club. Pre-orders are live now.
