Last Week’s Jams (7.28 – 8.1)

It was a really strange week over on the music side of things; Tuesday blew up and we covered 10 brand new songs. But, then it’s like everything died and there were no new tunes. Alas, we managed to get into about 25 new jams, though one didn’t hit the DSPs, so we’ll have to have you play detective (or just go love Piggietails already). I got to meet some new bands this week, like Aussie’s Mana Pools, as well as My Generation, so be sure to keep an eye on both. Some diehard acts we love also came out with new tunes, such as Snooper‘s new album, Massage back in the fold and another Dancer hit from their forthcoming banger of an LP. Plus, the are is some ATX love from Nuclear Daisies and J’Cuuzi too! Get on it.

Golden Apples Share Mind

This new track from Golden Apples is a jam from start to finish, but for me, some of the greatest joy are the little musical nuggets hanging inside the track itself. When it opened with a snappy drum groove I was on board, but then this crisp guitar meanders into the picture and I was locked into the song. Russel Edling’s voice has this familiarity, in both the tone and the style, though I particularly love the punctuated hit at 50 seconds, erupting into this boisterous bundle of love that you can’t deny. Going forward the song then begins to layer in some textures that completely open up the dynamic, and I’m totally here for it. The new album, Shooting Star, will be out on September 19th via Lame-O Records, with an Austin date in September too!

Golden Apples Announces Shooting Star

I love waking up to a bunch of really rad tunes, and today seems to be in our favor, as we now get this rad tune from Golden Apples, announcing the group’s new LP. The press release says their new album draws from a fusion between the sounds of Karen Dalton and Yo La Tengo, so obviously that’s going to scratch all the itches, musically. For me, the vocals really drew me in here, letting the sort of noise billow all around my ears whilst still keeping me focused; they’re kind of whispering, with some layers thrown atop one another while guitars buzz and explode in the background. It’s a balance between noise and joy, and I’m just going to sit here and put it on repeat for a few rounds. Shooting Star will drop via Lame-O on September 19th.

Last Week’s Jams, Today (4.18 – 4.22)

Lot’s of really great stuff last week, so we’re here, as we always are, revisiting our coverage from last week, that way you can catch up…or at least have a sweet playlist to enjoy. Some cool new stuff last week from perennial favorites like Flasher and Say Sue Me, plus excellent news that there’s a new CLAMM record on the way. Plus, I hadn’t been to a traveling show, aside from SXSW, so I was stoked to get out of the house and catch Dummy absolutely rip over at Hotel Vegas, so I threw in a nice little jam from the band’s Mandatory Enjoyment. It’s Monday; here’s tunes you might have missed.

Golden Apples Share Let Me Do My Thing

Everything we’ve heard from Golden Apples new LP has the markings of the last 30 years of indie rock; they’re like historical musicians rewriting the sounds as they see fit. On the latest single from the group, they hit these strong chords that nod to the surf-rock craze, but what I love his how they slow it down, never giving into the need to release that tension, so the track slides into this more subtle groove. When it hits the chorus, it carefully switches into the modern, looking at guitar pop and its penchant for huge melodic choruses. Looking forward to hearing all Golden Apples, their self-titled record out on April 28th via Lame-O Records.
