Special Friend Announce Wait Until the Flames Come Rushing In

What happens when you get three great indie labels together to release a new LP? Well, if you ask me, bringing Skep Wax, Howlin’ Banana, and Hidden Bay all together to release a new LP from Special Friend, then you’ve got the guarantee of a solid batch of songs. Our first listen is the hypnotic tune below, working with this guitar shuffle that circles beneath the surface of dual vocal work. There’s something in the way the guitar feels like its rushing you forwards that’s thrown in juxtaposition to what’s the melodic overlapping from the vocals. In a way, it sort of sounds like something Sonic Youth would have put out if they were into lo-fi indie pop…warranting a positive nod on my end of things! We’ll give you more updates on the release date of Wait Until the Flames Come Rushing In when we’ve got em’.

Sean Trelford Readies Care Home Party

We are being shown the future this week, with clever pop tunes from The Laughing Chimes…and now Sean Trelford. Sean’s a teenage songwriter who turned to songwriting to write his way out of his feelings during the pandemic. Those songs have now been compiled to create Care Home Party, a 9 track collection of bedroom pop being championed by our friends at Hidden Bay Records and Field Mates Records. This lead single is playful, and honestly, it’s not too far off from more mainstream indiepop, though the way the tune evolves and sort of trickles down the line is what totally sold me on the sound. Excited to hear the entirety of this LP; it drops on November 18th.

Rush to Relax Prep Misli

If you’re solely an anglophone, then I’ll just come right out and say you should skip over this post about Slovenian outfit Rush to Relax. Honestly, I don’t have a clue what they’re saying, but the emotional draw still supersedes, dripping with sharp guitar pop. The drums have this little bob to them, occasionally kicking in with an extra little high step, so you’ve got the groove established. Various guitar lines come into play throughout; you get some dancing jangles, almost tickling guitar notes, but then as the song unfolds, those lines become more elaborate, accented by sweeping string arrangements to fill it all out. Misli is the name of the group’s new LP, coming our way August 31st via Hidden Bay/Look Back and Laugh/Pop Depresija.

Sinaive Prep Super 45 t.

French group Sinaive are crafting this perfectly fuzzy brand of pop that has me on the edge of my seat as I wait for their new Super 45 t. EP. Opening up with this wall of scuzzy fuzzy guitars immediately captures my attention. From there it turns right into something cozy and warm, with the melodies mingling together to create this wonder-world of daydreaming. Few band really capture the perfect balance between noise and pop elements as perfectly as this French quartet do. Plus, they’re releasing their EP with one of my favorite labels, Hidden Bay Records (also Arvo Disques/Hellzapoppin Records); the whole EP drops at the end of May, but you can get seduced right below!

Luke Lover Readies New LP

Lukas Stadler has been writing and recording songs over the past few years in preparation for the release of his new Luke Lover LP. The project is a mixture between home recordings and work in his band’s practice space, so you’re getting this hyper-intimate songwriting process. But, the song’s resonate beyond the confines of a tape machine or a bedroom, layering moment after moment; you can feel this new single building towards a climactic release, which does indeed come in the song’s last quarter, almost playing upon modern post-punk trends in the vocal delivery. This track’s on the Luke Lover LP, which comes out via Hidden Bay/We Don’t Make It on May 6th.

Enjoying Singles from Coeur Joie

The good thing about mellow music weeks is that you get a chance to indulge in tunes you might have missed or you can prepare from forthcoming releases from friends. So, here I’ve been listening to French outfit Coeur Joie (translates to heart joy) before the release of their new album tomorrow, and I immediately wanted to share the tunes, despite my limitations with the French language. Somethings supersede lyrical content, and these tracks have that emotional appeal where it just hits you immediately, burying you in a listening cocoon that lets you escape from the world. They release Allumettes au bout des iles tomorrow on Hidden Bay Records, so be sure to enjoy the samples below, and grab the whole meal tomorrow!

Persica 3 Announce Tangerine + Share Water Lily Single

Parisian outfit Persica 3 will be releasing Tangerine in the first weeks of March, and they’ve just shared this little sample of what’s coming your way, thus why I’m here pointing you in their direction. There’s not too much out there about those working on the songs, but they’re crafting these beautiful soundscapes that will make folks think back on acts like Stereolab, or more recent pushes by Dummy. It’s pop collage work, at times taking risks to get lost in the musical woods, exploring the paths that leads you nowhere, only to retrace the steps and start anew, each time bringing in more texture to the fold. Grab a cup of coffee, pull your chair to the window, and let this song take your mind out into the world. Look for Tangerine on March 4th courtesy of Hidden Bay Records.

Sam Forrest Announces Aeroplane Days

Feel like you need a mid-morning pick me up? Were you a fan of early Brendan Benson, or late Elliott Smith (I mean, we all were, right?)? Well, then join me in spending a bit of time with Sam Forrest, an English songwriter who just announce his latest record, Aeroplane Days. This tune’s got that driving stomp backing up a nice little strum, with Forrest taking up those wispy vocal notes. One of the reason’s I’ve been gravitating towards Sam’s stuff is that there’s definitely a solid blend between finer intimate moments between he and the listener, balance evenly by buoyant pop feels that pervade the record…as you can see here. If you dig, its out via Hidden Bay Records and Desert Mine on September 10.

Death of Pop Share Go Back Single

We’re about a month away from the release of a new Death of Pop LP, so why not spin that latest single from the James brothers. The band employs these little details that some reason seem to elevate their work above many of their peers, like the steady lite buzz in this tune, like you’re listening to one of your parent’s old records. In a sense, it’s like the dreamier bedroom pop version of Arab Strap, with a larger focus on melody and drenching the listener in electronic pop melodies that criss and cross. It’s like an old school feel, that’s refreshingly current with its dreamy notes. Seconds will be released by Hidden Bay Records and Discos de Kirlian on March 19th.

Special Friend Share Pastel Video

The latest single from Special Friend, well, its quite special. It’s a double edged pop affair, with this incredibly charming guitar work that gives it that old school sort of indie pop feel…the sort you’d expect to hear back in the 80s circle of pop. Still, its steadied by this really solitary percussive element, which allows for the song to structure the vocals, which ultimately win you over. I mean, these two voices are so perfectly fitting its hard to imagine either one existing without the other. Plus, just as the ghost on the video has captivated you; the 2:40 mark brings with it this uptick in energy, bringing out this frantic bit of jangling pop that should be played on all your speakers today! Ennemi Commun will be released by Hidden Bay Records/Howlin Banana on March 26th.
