And Another Idiot Glee Track

idiotaWhy not start off the week with another sweet tune from Idiot Glee? This tune has come in quick succession to the first single released, but I can see that we’ve all got to take note of this release as both of the singles are pretty special. There’s a likeness to Adam Green or Jens Lekman in the vocals on this tune, immediately holding a special place in my heart. But, I also like the way the song builds in the middle and end, piling sounds on to the voice of James Friley to create this huge wall of pop. Look for his new self-titled album on January 29th via Hop Hop Records.

Operatic Notes from Idiot Glee

idiotaI feel like it’s been almost three years since we first wrote about Idiot Glee on these here Interweb pages. It seems like upon his return, he’s upped the ante on the production, taking his operatic notes even higher. He’s still coming across like a more forlorn Dent May or Jens Lekman, though that’s not entirely a bad thing as the pop sensibility never seems to fade from his songs. He just announced the release of his new self-titled album, and this lead single should hopefully have you listening closely. Look for the new effort on January 29th via Hop Hop Records.

Show Pics: Islands @ St. David’s Episcopal (2/17)

Islands is an Austin Town Hall favorite. Nicholas Thorburn heads the band that creates a wide range of music, poppy in the beginning, maturing as the project continues. Islands came through Austin with Idiot Glee and decided to take a shot at hosting a show in the St. David’s Episcopal Church.

If you get the chance, go to a show in a church. It is all about the acoustics and the ambience. It’s just different.

How different? Read on, I’ll tell you and show you.

More New Tunes from Idiot Glee

Awhile back I talked about Idiot Glee and singer James Friley, claiming him as one of the artists you needed to check out for SXSW.  His popularity continues to grow with his careful bedroom craftsmanship.  His voice has a distant feel, yet the music is completely relatable.  He’ll be releasing his latest record Paddywhack on Moshi Moshi on June 7th, and the song below is just another slow-burning gem that will carry you away quietly.  This is the kind of weekend we all need when times require a little bit of rest and relaxation.

New Music from Idiot Glee

A lot is always said about creativity amongst singer-songwriters, and recent hits like Jens Lekman (or I guess you could say James Blake) use the layering of textures to craft amazing tracks.  James Friley does much the same thing under the name Idiot Glee, except my itnerest in his tunes comes from his influences musically, such as Scott Walker or Brian Wilson…you know, real pop geniuses.  He’ll be making his way to SXSW this year, and you can look for a full-length at some point in the summer.  For now, just enjoy the fact that his layering of textures and melodies seems harmonious, as that’s what it should be about.
