Check Out Dallas Friends Kyoto Lo-Fi

Sometimes we can all use a little bit of feel good indie pop music with dashes of garage rock right? If that sounds like your sort of bag, this new single “Godot” from Dallas based Kyoto Lo-Fi should be right up your alley. Imagine if you will a band mixing some vocal and guitar elements of The Strokes with pop tendencies like Devo. Slick New Single From Aunt Sis

Man it’s been right around 3 years since we’ve heard anything from Asheville, NC based indie rockers Aunt Sis. After the long delay, you can imagine my excitement to hear from them again. Breaking back on the scene today, the band offer up this delightful new single “Fastest Animal”. The track begins as a bright bit of instrumental guitars full of light, but then slows down a bit before building into a fast and furious finish with yearning vocals to boot. It’s a welcome return from a band we were certainly missing.

You Should Check Out Big Baby

Right around this time last year I shared some news about indie pop masters Young Scum from Richmond, VA. Since then, I’ve heard very little from the band, and assumed maybe they had called it quits. As it turns out, not to be so, as the guys reformed under the new name Big Baby. Their new project already has an albums worth of material and they sent me over an exclusive preview via recently released single “Not That”. Once again we are treated to some of the most delightful and memorable indie pop currently being released. If you dig it, new album Sour Patch is currently available on their bandcamp page.

Late to the Game: Fresh Hit from The Popguns

I was beginning to worry that one of our favorite purveyors of indiepop had gone too dormant, but as luck would have it, looks like Matinee Recordings have gotten their hands on another new album from the Popguns. The band has been going at it for thirty years, yet Wendy Morgan still has the pipes to make all those indiepop fans swoon; her performance here is definitely the star of the show. She turns melodies atop the band’s sharp jangles and steady beats, washing over you with emotion tugging notes. Look for Sugar Kisses, the new record, on June 14th.

Brand New Pop Number from The Luxembourg Signal

As much as I relished the debut album from The Luxembourg Signal, I’m going out on a short limb and claiming this new single as the best work they’ve done to date…might just be one of the best songs I’ve heard this month, in fact. When the song came in, mixing guitars with speedy hi-hat work, I thought the band might jump off into an upbeat affair. Soon, however, synths washed over my speakers and Betsy Moyer’s smoky voice slowly billowed. For me, that combination would be enough to call it a winner, but the band won’t rest there; they bring in some walls of distortion and bending chords from the distance, building a dreamily infectious moment…Moyer’s voice almost takes on a playful tone during the chorus. And, as the song fades to a close, they throw in a slightly heavier hand and some vocal “bah bah bahdop,” only increasing my adoration. They’ve got their follow-up, Blue Field, in the works, but they’ll be releasing this song via 7″ on June 23rd via Shelflife. Sit back and fall in love here.

Bright New Single From Snowglobe

8919019_1_origMany thanks are due to local Austin label Super Sonic Sounds Records for sending over this bright new single from Memphis based Snowglobe. It’s pure indie pop at it’s core, but also features some elements of Americana and a bit of quirkiness as well. Hopefully we’ll be hearing more from these guys real soon.

Snowglobe will release their new self-titled LP on July 29th via Super Sonic Sounds Records.

Rip It Up DJ Night @ Cheer Up Charlies (6.25)

rip_it_upIf you follow this site, you know by now that I’m a huge indiepop/jangle pop/post-punk fan. It’s one of my favorite genres, and I’ve been hoping that somehow the rest of Austin catches on to it. So, with our friends that helped organize the ATX Popfest and Welcome to the Jangle, we’re organizing what we hope will be a monthly DJ residency (with shows to come in the future) to share our favorite genre. Tomorrow night at Cheer Up Charlies, at 7 PM, we’ll be kicking things off, with a few well-regarded DJs, including Nathaniel from Literature. More Synth Pop from Red Sleeping Beauty

redsleepingWhen I talked about the Mi Amor 7″ a few weeks back I mentioned that Red Sleeping Beauty really seemed to be going for it again, with deserved success. Today, Labrador and Shelflife released another track from the forthcoming album, and it’s a hit. I love the tone of the vocals (dark, sometimes smoky), especially when they coolly move into the chorus. Synth work is playful, though it’s not banging you over the head like some EDM sorts, allowing you to take in the pleasure of great electronic pop. The record is titled Kristina and has a release date of June 17th. You want real pop music? Here you go.

New Pop from The Hairs

thehairsI’m surprised that this new track from The Hairs isn’t getting more traction. This is the sort of literary pop music that people pine for, but maybe that’s just in my small circle of friends. Regardless, The Hairs combine these vocal hooks that wrap around this excellent songwriting, churning out infectiousness that will resonate on your stereo forever. They’re also one of the many great acts that’s going to be playing at the excellently curated NYC Popfest in a few weeks. Look for the group’s new album, While, I Hated Life, Barbarian, which will be released by Old Flame Records on June 24th.

New Single From Stone Cold Fox

SCF-Summer-15-Promo-2118-620x414During the early part of last year, Nathan shared a song with you guys by Brooklyn based group Stone Cold Fox and all of us started paying attention to the group.  Since that time we didn’t hear a whole lot from the band so I was fairly excited when they sent me over this great new song “Contagion”.  I’m calling it a straight up indie rock gem certainly worthy of tons of praise and accolades.  The band has told us to expect a new album sometime in 2016 with this song and surely more hits in store.
