Austin Spotlight: Stream the Milezo Album

milezoIt’s been a really great year for Austin music, recording-wise, so it should come as no surprise that there’s another solid release coming out of the town to wrap up the year. Milezo just tossed out their new album, Heads on Holiday. Like most things done with the band, the entire listen is a journey. You’ll hear songs of the psych sort pushed in the direction of wistful pop songs then off to lush gazing tracks. It’s never in one place long, offering a lot of discovery for listeners. Take a trip with these guys by streaming it in its entirety below; you won’t regret it.

Listen to a Dead Stars B-Side

deadstarsLong have we supported Dead Stars. They’re one of those acts that consistently perfect the are of nostalgic college rock n’ roll. They’ve got huge distorted riffs, pulled back to reveal a steadying melody that always maintains a central roll in their songs. By bridging the two together, they bring you these huge hooks that fit perfectly into long drives with wind in your hair. I love the patience of this song, which features as the B-Side to their”Calm Punk” single. Have fun jamming out this tune really loudly.

Shark Week Return

sharkweek_promo_webBeen awhile since I’ve heard anything from D.C. based Shark Week after a promising start a couple of years surrounding a solid SXSW performance and a few singles here and there.  Today I’m pumped to be sharing with you the first single called “Waste of Time” from the band’s upcoming debut LP.  It’s definitely a more focused effort from what we’ve heard in the past from the band.

New album Beach Fuzz is out on May 19th via PaperCup Music.

Austin Spotlight: Empire Machines

1601277_725410277513549_9198015871024763830_nWith the insane amount of bands in our great little city, it’s never truly shocking that I’m finding promising up and coming bands all the time.  Somehow I had never really listened to Empire Machines despite seeing their name from time to time on some local bills.  After reaching out to me recently, I gave a listen to their new EP and am rather pleased with the discovery.  Below you can check out that new EP entitled Animal Skin.  Waiting for you within is what might be one of Austin’s best kept secrets in the indie rock scene.  You’ll get a bit of heavy distortion, enchanting melodies and one of the better rhythm sections I’ve heard in quite some time.  Opening and title track “Animal Skin” hits super hard and will grab your attention as you make your way through an engaging and rocking 3 tracker.

Say hi to Empire Machines on facebook or stream more of their music over on bandcamp.  Stay tuned for more news from the band.

ATX Show Spotlight: Deep Cuts + Shivery Shakes @ Cheer Ups (1/29)

showIt’s that time of year, when things start to pick up across town as we warm up to SXSW.  There’s a great deal of shows this week, but I’d like to encourage you all to hit up Cheer Up Charlies to catch some local Texas acts that I guarantee will bring joy to your life.  You’ve got the impressive Deep Cuts folks from Houston, who are growing increasingly popular.  Shivery Shakes, who released their Three Waves and a Shake LP on ATH Records, will help keep your spirits up.  Plus Modrag and Casual Strangers intend to get you there early, as they’re both extremely worthy of your attendance.  There’s no cover and the show starts at 9 PM.  Come enjoy the weather and the good vibes.

Divers Bring Out New Single

dvrsThe guys in Divers talk of walking the fine long between indie rock and punk rock, and listening to their new single, you can hear them straddling that strange divide.  Opening this tune is this jagged guitar and furious punch; it reminds me of Les Savy Fav at their most bombastic.  But, those moments subside quickly and move into a safer world where Win Butler would feel most protected..or one of those Hold Steady cats. It’s definitely something I enjoy, though I’m not sure where it falls in my life. I guess we’ll see when their album Hello Hello falls on February 17th.

The Dodos Give Us Something New

thedodos01The Dodos have always been a band beloved by those of us at ATH even if their more recent material has left us longing a bit for the good old days.  Today I’m happy to share with you this new track “Competition” that is really a return to old form in my opinion.  The song is a simple pop number with those folky overtones that made us fall for this band back in the day.  Truly a hit for the winter season.

Pick up the brand spankin’ new album Individ on January 27th via Polyvinyl Records.[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/175335454″ params=”color=ff9900&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The New Pornographers – Brill Bruisers

c0c1c6baRating: ★★★½☆

When it comes to indie rock super groups, you really can’t beat the likes of The New Pornographers. Making music together since 1999, this Canadian band consists of the best of the best, each of which have their own successful career be it alone or with another band. There’s Carl “A.C” Newman, Dan Bejar, Neko Case, and Kathryn Calder, just to name off a few, but let’s be honest: you should probably know who this band is as they’ve been around for longer than a decade and Brill Bruisers makes for their sixth full length release. Though it is sixth in a line of solid releases, by no means does it feel trite or banal—The New Pornographers have managed to do it once again.

With a band that is a culmination of so many great individual artists, I’m always flummoxed as to how this group can create a cohesive sound for their group. Sure, different artists take the lead on a track-to-track basis, incorporating their own styles, but Brill Bruisers manages to come together fairly easily. From opening title track to the last and glittering “You Tell Me Where,” the group hits their stride multiple times and gives you some great tunes.

I think it partially depends on which lead vocalist you like the best that will leads you to your favorite numbers. There’s Newman’s opening “Brill Bruisers,” which kicks the album off en medias res with the groups shimmery indie rock; the percussion is essentially all cymbal, the guitars’ blend in with the mix, synthesizers wander around through the song and the vocals of Newman lead you fearlessly through these airy walls of sound. Of course, he’s not alone, you get a lot of gang vocals singing back up through the whole song, which gives it an even lighter, poppier feeling. Later on you get Bejar’s unmistakable warbling vocals up to bat on “War On The East Coast,” which happens to be my favorite track on the record. The track seemingly makes comment on today’s general feeling of chaos and disarray—“look what we’re living in.” While the track rages on in full fury of to a build at the end, the choral hook has Bejar crooning “Oh, I don’t care, I don’t care,” making you want to scream right along with him, even if the sentiment is apathy, it’s still relatable. However, it’s not just the tracks with an outright lead vocal that will get you falling for them. On the contrary, “Fantasy Fools,” has a shared lead vocal that elbows its way into your list of highlights as well.

Though there’s a lot to love on Brill Bruisers, for me the album doesn’t go above and beyond to give you a sound that you want to sing to the world about. Sure, you’ll come back and jam with this group of lovable indie-poppers now and again, but there’s just a little bit missing from this release to push it to the next level.

Austin Spotlight: The Villas

villasPRESSphotoA simple search on ATH with the terms The Villas will return quite a few hits spotlighting this Austin band.  That being said, you know that we’ve already given them the ATH stamp of approval long ago.  This new track “Natural Selection” is what I would call a classic and catchy indie-pop tune.  You won’t hear any crazy sort of experimental things going on here, just some great rockin’ pop sounds that will have you chanting along after a few listens.  Hope you enjoy.
