Hobby Club Drop Another Single

Feel like Hobby Club have been peaking into my record collection. Beth’s voice is powerful and up front; her performance is like she controls the room around her, even when speaking through the speakers. Behind her, there’s these jagged little jangling guitar lines, sharp and turning; they seem to match the drum beat perfectly, struck at just the right time to maximize the infectiousness. Important and fun, that’s how this feels to me, like I need to/have to listen, but I can kick up the feet just a little bit while in the process. I’m looking forward to the duo’s debut EP on Friday!

Star Tropics Share Indiepop Gem

I feel like it’s been a slow year for indiepop fans. We had that Fanclub EP, and the Business of Dreams LP, but I pray that the newest single from Star Tropics means we’ll get another LP from them real soon. It’s been a few years since Lost World, so that only seems fitting…and if the whole thing is as good as this single I’ll probably cry. It employs a lot of the genre staples, those guitars that blend dream and jangling, dancing and maneuvering in the mix. Oh, and then they go throw that female/male vocal juxtaposition at me? Yea, just a slight swoon, no big deal. I like how the wash of keyboards opens up the space too, letting the song ride out into the horizon. Made my day.

Stream The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness Debut LP

Just a week or two ago, The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness teased their debut LP with “Close the Doors;” I wrote about the churning pop magnificence. Now, Dead Calm isn’t officially out until March 1st, but Pretty Olivia Records is already streaming the record in its entirety. If you missed the crystalline guitars of the Lucksmiths, with the occasional power-pop pep, then this is where you belong today. I’ve been playing “Southern Words” on repeat for some time today, and also happy to see that “Nervous Man” found a home on the LP. Dammit, I’m going to go down into the worm hole that is this entire album; join me, won’t you!

The Boys with Perpetual Nervousness Announce Debut LP

If you paid close attention to my year end list of indiepop last year, you saw the “Nervous Man” single from the Boys with Perpetual Nervousness included. Now, the band have announced their debut LP, and it looks to be filled with these twinkling jangles and warm melodies. Andrew Taylor takes over vocal duties for this song, while 12 string guitars charm your pants off; I love the little vocal twist at the end of the song just before the 3 minute mark. It makes sense that I adore this, as the band also features Gonzalo from El Palacio de Linares. Could he make two hit albums in one year? We’ll see when Dead Calm appears on March 8th via Pretty Olivia Records.

Lost Tapes Return with The Bill

It’s been a few years since we last heard from Lost Tapes with their collection, We Thought It Was Okay at the Time. One thing’s for sure today, the band definitely are doing okay right now, hitting that musical sweet spot of my personal tastes. For starters, there’s a wash over the track, matched by some of the shadier attributes of the accompanying video; this haze hangs on to the vocals too, giving off this dream state. But, just beneath that fuzzy pop is this stuttering jangle pop; it’s sounds a great bit like “Rip It Up” by Orange Juice, which is a sure-fire dance number for me and my wife. Not every day you come across a number that hits the dream pop and the jangle at once; this tune appears on the group’s new EP, out on Shelflife on February 22nd.

Elva Announce Debut LP

There’s been whispers of an Elva full-length ever since they dropped their first single, but they’ve picked up over the last month…and that time is apparently near. The group, featuring former members of Allo Darlin and Making Marks, have announced Winter Sun via Tapete Records. At this point, we’re only getting snippets, but they’re lengthy snippets, so it warrants a post…not to mention it’s always wonderful to hear Elizabeth Morris voice coming through my speakers. It looks like she and Ola will be trading vocal duties for the band’s forthcoming release, or at least that’s what we get here in these teasers. So for now, just over 4 minutes to show you how wonderful Elva can be…and then we wait until April!

Escuchen a El Palacio de Linares

In shitty times we turn to music; it cures us in ways other things cannot. I’m in the midst of one such week, and the only solace I’m finding are in this song or that song. But, the past few days have been spent putting this new LP from El Palacio de Linares on repeat. There’s spritely indiepop gems like “Piscinas Naturales” or “Pez Espada,” but admittedly, I keep coming back to the ridiculously beautiful “Ciervo y Erizo.” Something about the melody mixed with the song’s natural bounce before spinning into the dreamy chorus is probably going to bring tears to my eyes as I play it again and again today. Pleased to Meet You: Olivia’s World

You’re working through your day, enjoying various tunes, and suddenly Rose Melberg’s name pops up under new releases. You scour the Internet, you rush to find the track…lo and behold, there’s Olivia’s World, a new band featuring Rose on drums, with friends Lica and Joe joining in. The trio craft that insatiable sort of pop, high on fuzzy, hook-laden guitars, and heavy on the sugary vocals that make any listener swoon. The video is playful, attached to the feeling of the song, with Lica seemingly having the most fun with her shark impression. Lost Sound Tapes promise to have a cassette EP out this Spring…but it’ll sell out quick if the songs are all as good as this.

Brand New Business of Dreams

We continue our regular column supporting all things Corey Cunningham by bringing you the latest single from his Business of Dreams project. I’m not sure how he’s been able to do it, but he’s topped his previous release, and is running nearly neck and neck with some of his other projects that I adore. I love the keyboard work in this track; it sort of gives this shining brightness from behind the mix, allowing for the wispy vocals to coolly wash over the listener. I don’t want to gush, except that I do. This song is just one example of everything that is great about the new album; there’s ten other examples on Ripe for Anarchy, out Feb 1st via Slumberland.
