Fresh Tune from the Orchids

We’re just a year or so removed from The Orchids 30 Year Retrospective, and it’s great to see the band have new music on the very near horizon. In fact, they’ve recently released the first single from their forthcoming 7″ for WIAIWYA. It’s a mild-mannered pop song, mostly sitting back and allowing the harmonies to do the work over soft percussive elements. The vocal display, of course, has that luxurious contrast between male and female bits…James’ voice always sounds so friendly and familiar, like all those times my father sang with his guitar around the house. Anyways, another great Sarah Records survivor with new music for us; they’re new 7″ drops on August 7th.

Another Charmer from The Smittens

I seem to be continuously charmed by the Smittens, and here we are again with another brilliant pop song to adore. It’s got a steady cadence, filled in with wonderful harmonies between various members of the group; the group stretch out the song in the latter half, allowing for a more thought provoking element to the tune. That makes sense, as Dana says he penned the number as ‘a coming out/transition anthem,’ encouraging us to all ‘find the spaces in which we belong.’ City Rock Dove will be out via Fika Recordings on August 3rd.

Brand New Jetstream Pony

It’s not every day you get to delve into the musical world of pop supergroups, but alas, that’s where we are with Jetstream Pony, a band composed of members hailing from acts like Trembling Blue Stars and the Wedding Present. In this new single, they toy with us, delivering a thirty second guitar intro, meandering through your speakers. Then the rhythm section jumps right in, and let’s face it, you’re immediately hooked on this track. The guitars have a jagged edge, but the song has this sugary sheen that’s leaps and bounds above any other purveyor of pop music at the moment. This excellent tune will appear on the group’s new Self-Destruct Reality EP, which is being released by the highly-regarded Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten; it drops in an amazing 12″ format you can find HERE.

Beachy Pop from Jan Flu

It’s time I take my adoration of indiepop sounds all over the world, this time visiting Japanese outfit Jan Flu. The video itself seems to immediately draw from American tropes such as the skateboarding along the beachfront or other images associated with Cali. Musically, there’s this driving bounce from the group, heightened by the crisp angular guitar lines that encircle your ears. The vocals have this deep tonal quality, which also works in contrast to the sharp tones of the guitars; this juxtaposition is the one that encourages you to twirl about with your arms flailing. This song appears on the groups debut album, After Image, which comes out on July 11th.

Well, I’m pretty sure that the world’s going to be a better place today, at least if this morning’s listen to the Always On Your Side EP is anything to go by. I mean, I can’t deny the catchy powers crafted by Red Sleeping Beauty this round. “Always on Your Side” is crafted with hook-laden synths and warm vocal melodies, then it’s immediately followed by the playful bounding of “Falling Out of Love.” That’s it. I can’t write about it anymore. It’s just too delicious. If, like me, you’re enjoying these four tracks, they’re available in a limited capacity via Sunday Records.

Indiepop from Fantasmamidi

It’s Tuesday, the day everyone forgot. But, why not hit it hard from the get-go with this spirited track from Spain’s Fantasmamidi. Immediately upon pressing play you’re going to find that your toes are tapping uncontrollably, and you might even leave your chair to flail about. Don’t let the Spanish lyrics deter you away, as the vocals still have a nice warm draw to them…even if you don’t speak the language. I really couldn’t think of a better way to start out your day than by listening to this track; their new self-titled album just became available via Discos de Kirlian.

Alpaca Sports Drop New Single

There’s a new single coming from Alpaca Sports, and we’ll wait patiently as long as they keep teasing us with lovable singles like the new one below. The song works around those jangling guitar sounds, with Andreas singing gently atop, so as not to disturb the track’s natural melody. A wash of keyboard work gives the song a bit more depth, with pronounced piano notes appropriately emphasizing various notes. Those unfamiliar with the group might want to pay attention, particularly if you’ve been into things like PoBPaH as of late; it’s all charm, making us salivate for From Paris with Love, which comes out later this year via Elefant Records.

Red Sleeping Beauty Release New Single

Two things that I adore unite together in this joyful track from Red Sleeping Beauty; you get indiepop and you get an homage to soccer. This track is being labeled as the unofficial Swedish World Cup anthem, thus the title of the tune. Heavy on the beats and high on harmonies is a sure-fire way to get right into my listening rotation. Hopefully this track can hold you over until the World Cup kicks off in a few weeks…or until the band wraps up their new studio album, which is rumored to be out this Fall.

Cloudberry Preps Release from Okama Flannel Boy

I promise you that when you listen to the new single from Okama Flannel Boy, you’ll likely place the music somewhere over in the UK, perhaps even Scotland where the shuffling jangle of guitars grew in popularity. But alas, OFB is actually from Mexico City, which makes the fact that Fernando Torres is crafting such joyous indiepop all the more enticing. We owe that discovery purely to Roque, who might be one of the last gatekeepers of great indiepop out there; he’ll be releasing the new four song 7″ from OFB on his Cloudberry Records label, coming some time this summer!

Spritely Indiepop from The Tree House Melodies

A ways back we tossed up this really great single from The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness, and now we bring you the joyous B-side track from their split 7″ with The Tree House Melodies. Every time I listen to this track, I keep thinking this is what Teenage Fanclub would sound like if they never used a distortion pedal again. It’s got a slight bit of bounce in the lightly jangling guitars, and the voice seems to hold onto this sense of longing. All together it carries this understated power-pop vibe, giving you a sense of a fireside chat with one of your favorite artists. You’re going to want to get your hands on this new 7″ from Pretty Olivia Records.
