Another Single from Alex Maas

Three singles into the new Alex Maas record, and this is by far the one that will stand out to me before I go and listen to the Black Angelssinger’s solo record. On first listen, there’s this reverberation through your speakers, almost sort of allowing the notes a bit of levitation just outside your ear. On my end, I’m giving my appreciation to the intimate folky nature of the track; it’s as if the song was meant to serenade the masses before a worker’s march…perhaps tying into Maas reflections on looking inside society for a bit of good. Luca is out on December 4th via Innovative Leisure.

Alex Maas Shares American Conquest Video

Today seems a fitting day to share the new video from Alex Maas of the Black Angels, as the track revolves around the issue of shootings, which is surely an idea for those walking into polling stations. The song is sort of a seance, a contemplative track matched by a colorful video, lulling you into the mystery and the message. But, despite that ominous feel of the song (and of today) Maas assures us that “there’s a lot of good in” the world as a whole, so we should celebrate those moments, and use art to focus on the changes we can make elsewhere. Or maybe that’s how I see it. This song features on Alex’s new solo LP, Luca, out December 4th via Innovative Leisure.

Alex Maas Announces Solo LP

I feel like many folks listening to the Black Angels all these years will be quite taken aback by Alex Maas‘ solo work, and while I love BA, I think I might even love this better. It has this nostalgic pop sound, the sort that filled every room of my home as a child (thanks Dad!). There’s still this sort of foreboding in his vocals, and perhaps in some of the lyrical content of this particular track, though the music definitely seems uplifting. Every moment here feels like its being painted with these huge sweeping brush strokes, leaving classic pop sensibility on the sonic canvas. Pretty powerful stuff. Luca is out on December 4th via Innovative Leisure.

Tijuana Panthers Share Path of Totality

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard from Tijuana Panthers, but they’re looking to making a triumphant return with Carpe Denim, their brand new LP. The band claim to have gone through some growth and maturity, but that doesn’t mean the sound has done the same. In fact, it sounds like they haven’t really skipped a beat, only adding layers that will flex the band’s songwriting muscles. In the video, you can tell the band’s having a bunch of fun, which actually correlates to the song’s vibe; it almost sounds like the group harnessed their live energy and threw it all inside the recording…plus you know I’m a sucker for “whoo-hoos.” You’ll be able to get your hands on the new LP on July 12th via Innovative Leisure.

New Music from The Molochs

There’s two things that come to mind when I play this new track from The Molochs: one, you can most assuredly hear California coming through your speakers; two, this sounds like a sly nod to Britpop (particularly 94′ era Oasis). To me, both things are great reasons to jam this song on repeat; it’s crunchy in just the right spots, but mostly melodic throughout…so I’m easily charmed. Plus, the group have Flowers in the Spring coming your way in September, and since their last LP was a hit, you can pretty much guarantee this one will be equally enjoyable; it drops via Innovative Leisure.

Dig on This New Tune from Mint Field

It’s a strange place where the propulsive grooves of club beats crash into the dreamier zones of psychedelia; this is the precise place where you’ll find Mint Field. They manage to blend minimalist hints of electronica inside these swelling guitar lines that meander into the ether. Musically, it’s fascinating in and of itself, but when placed inside the video below listeners are sure to be completely lifted out of their body as they journey outside of their body. The duo have a slew of dates coming up, including SXSW…all supporting their new album Pasar de las Luces, which is being released by Innovative Leisure on February 23rd.

More From The Molochs

unnamed-2Man these guys in The Molochs are really pumping out some solid tunes in preparation for their new record. We’ve already heard the western boogie in lead single “No More Cryin'” and now we’re treated to another gem with this second single “You and Me”. It seems perfect to me that this band is from southern California because their sound is a perfect homage to late 60s SoCal pop music. This album is going to be on of the year’s best.

Pick up new album America’s Velvet Glory on January 13th via Innovative Leisure.

New Swinging Single From Nick Waterhouse

unnamedThose in the mood for a little throwback, doo wop style pop music on this Wednesday should check out this new single entitled “It’s Time” from San Francisco based Nick Waterhouse. You’ll hear many genre elementshere like soul, jazz, and r&b all coming together nicely to create a powerful bit of retro pop music. I could see Nick headlining a stage at ACL here pretty soon if he keeps this up.

Waterhouse will release Never Twice on September 30th via Innovative Leisure.

More Music from Wall of Death

wallThe name Wall of Death is a lot more foreboding than this single, so lets get that out of the way. It opens really softly, using careful guitar lines filled in behind a nice electronic atmosphere. Then things blast off into a psychedelic explosion of cascading guitars cutting through the speakers before the vocals even come into play. I get the feeling this is what Pink Floyd would sound like if they were making relevant music in the modern era. Look for the band’s brand new album, Loveland, which is being released by Innovative Leisure next Friday, March 4th.

Check This Beautifully Dark Wall of Death Sound

wallofdeathYou’d think with Wall of Death as the band’s name that you’d get something dark and heavy. You do, except it comes in via the emotional pull of the track, rather than the music. When listening to the song itself, you find yourself in a strange place; it’s a place that revolves somewhere in the space between Air and a more ghostly Fresh and Onlys. I know, it sounds pretty ridiculous, in a good way, but you’ll have to take a listen to hear precisely what I heard on my first several run-throughs. This tune is the title track to their new album, Loveland, which hits on January 29th via Innovative Leisure.
