Long have we supported the New York’s Dead Stars, so as they prepare to head into Austin for a few days of rock n’ roll at SXSW, we thought it best to give you a quick introduction to the band before you decide that you’ll be better off including them in your viewing plans. Read on for the band’s answers to our thought-provoking questions.
One of my favorite bands of the last several years, Natural Child, is making their way to Austin, again. Despite the fact that they always seem to be here, I’m always willing to go out of my way to catch their sets. They’ve got a new album, Dancin With Wolves, which will be out by the time the band rolls into town for SXSW; it’s a little bit different than previous work, but equally as good. Running interviews thus far has been a success, and it’s great to see the dynamic personalities spread across the globe making music. We turn our sites today towards Canada’s Each Other, who’ve got a brand new record coming out on Lefse Records; it’s titled Being Elastic. I caught the band a few years back, and personally, it was one of my favorite sets; I also hear via various friends that they’re super nice, which makes appreciating them all the easier. Pizza Time is the Denver-based product of one David Pizza. Not only does he like to rock the pizza rep, but he also spends a great deal of his time offering punk rock in Spanish. He’s done some releases with the most excellent cats over at Burger Records (though I wonder if they had issue with the band name, but I suppose Burger Time was already taken). Anyways, David is on his way to Austin for a great SXSW, so read on for his thoughts about the festival.
The Austin Music Blogger Awards is less than a week away, so we’ve got a few more interviews to help you get to know your local artists. This time I caught up with my friend Stephen Svacina from Sweet Talk; his band is nominated for Best EP with their Flash of Light EP (12XU). Stephen’s a good dude, and in one of Austin’s great pop-punk bands (just don’t tell him that or he’ll threaten you with pyrotechnic violence). They’ve got tons of bands to work with, and they try and organize a big weekend-long extravaganza so you can get your fill of their wide variety of acts. “Have never checked that out but seems like it would be pretty cool!” Yo, this is what I’m talking about! SXSW Interviews. This is one of the great things about SXSW; you get to discover brand new bands to love and adore. Perhaps one of those bands will be the Rich Hands, the Texas trio who seem to be working as hard as they can to get as many dates lined up for you as possible during the week. Another band kicking things out of the Southeastern United States hotbed is Dead Gaze. The band closed out a solid 2013 with the release of Brain Holiday, before touring the country with good friend Dent May. We were able to catch up with Cole via Al Gore’s greatest invention; you can read his responses down below.
The great thing about SXSW is that you get a lot of bands coming in from abroad to test the waters of the American music scene, so we figured we ought to offer up one of those acts to you: September Girls. The band is working with Fortuna Pop for their album, Cursing the Sea, which is a solid release. We even changed up our set of questions a bit for the ladies to give you a different look at acts traveling to us from far away.
