Letting Up Despite Great Faults Share Swirl

Okay, so “Swirl” has been floating around for a few days now, but to be fair, there’s been a lot of really great music, so I’m finally sitting down to enjoy new stuff from Letting Up Despite Great Faults. This new song illustrates some recent moves of the band, allowing songwriter Mike Lee to let go of the vocals, thus giving Annah more of the light. This move, as apparent on the tune below, maintains the band’s dreamy softness, as Fisette’s voice isn’t too far off from the tones Lee offers when he’s on the mic. I love the classic dance of the guitars here, sounding like something you’d find on a Republic B-sides collection…and a bonus for the band as they got Jay Som to lend some mixing help…another sign that these are good things on the rise.

Living Hour Announce New LP + Release Single w/ Jay Som

I have a feeling that if you’re writing about best tunes for the week, this new Living Hour track definitely has to be up there (if not, one of my favorite tunes of the month). I got hooked on the crashing guitar opening, but love the contrast as the tune quickly slides into a more mellow space, leaving lots of room for notes to ring sharply in your ears, allowing all those notes and vocals to kind of hang in the air. All that said, the song eventually slides back into the heavier notes, but I love how the mix keeps it heavy, though quiet; the vocals still have their dreaminess, even when coated with the distortion. A perfect balance between fragility and noise awaits you. The group will release their new LP, Someday is Today via Kanine in September.

A Year End List from Joe Smyth of Nine Mile Records and Touring

Joe Smyth help us keep our Austin theme today, as he’s one of the folks helping get Austin acts (and others) out on the road. But, more importantly, he’s a scavenger of music news, so he’s given us a couple of great lists…one a shout out to the blogs that turned him onto great music…and the other just a general best of list. Peruse as you must, and if you have touring needs…check out Nine Mile Touring.

Jay Som Announces Anak Ko

When Everybody Works was released, it seemed that everyone unanimously fell in love with Jay Som, myself included. So, will Anak Ko live up to the expectations? Honestly, not sure, but I sure do love this new single; it’s sort of an amalgam of sounds that I’ve grown to love; there is that ringing guitar sound with roots all the way back to the Flying Nun scene, synth work is built into provide some texture, and later on there’s this buzzsaw guitar knifing its way through the tracks latter half…and it’s all spun with exuberance that immediately makes you press play and listen again. Sometimes bands can fill too many ideas and muddy the mix, but here, the execution’s perfect…all the more reason to look forward to Anak Ko, out on 8/23 via Polyvinyl.

Stephen Steinbrink Shares New Single

This new Stephen Steinbrink number dropped at the end of the day yesterday, so why not start off our Friday by pointing you in the right direction…in case you missed out. While he’s toured in various acts through the years, he also has an extensive discography…but perhaps Utopia Teased will be the pinnacle. This track works around the softness of Steinbjrink’s voice and this rolling guitar line that seems built for ferrying you and your friends down some lone river even gets some aid from Melina from Jay Som to throw in some nice harmonies. Look for the new LP on November 9th via Western Vinyl.

Jay Som Preps New 7″

If you were reading many a year-end list, then surely you noticed Jay Som‘s album Everybody Works landing on most. Melina Duerte had originally demoed a few extra songs for the record that didn’t quite fit the flow, so she saved them for you to enjoy on a new 7″. To me, this tune sounds like a dreamier version of something Tegan and Sara would have written, with just hints of jangling guitar and a soft smoky vocal to ride it out. It should be clear after jamming this tune that Jay Som hype actually has substance; look for the new 7″ to drop via Polyvinyl on January 26th.

Jay Som Is Back with New Music

Ran the Courtneys latest track this morning, so seems only appropriate that we’d rock this new tune from their tourmate, Jay Som. The release of her new album, Everybody Works, is just about a month away, and I love the heavy-handed guitar on this new tune. Melina Duarte has a softness to her voice that provides the perfect musical juxtaposition, especially when she gets playful with the “up up up” line. There’s some discordant noise too at the end, when the chords are changed just a bit to offer up a slight bit of noise that gives the tune an extra bit of oompf to close things out. Polyvinyl Records will release the album on March 10th.

Japanese Breakfast will floor you with their perfect dream pop, while Jay Somis an artist of the self proclaimed “woozy” genre. I suggest you get there early to get the most out of your money.
