New Music From Eternal Summers

I’ve heard little to nothing from fuzz-pop group Eternal Summers since posting their sweet jam of summer cerca 2010 “Pogo”.  Well now the group just sent out word a few days ago that they have a new LP entitled Correct Behavior due out July 24th via Kanine Records.  We’re obviously pretty excited about the news and are even more excited to share this new song with you “Millions”.  Maybe this can be a summer jam 2012?  Damn it’s hot.

New Track from Young Prisms

Man, it looks like a solid year for Kanine Records, especially as they announce the release of the new album from Young Prisms.  The Cali band’s In Between, their sophomore release, will hit stores on March 27th.  One listen to the first single from this track, you’ll pretty much see where the “Floating in Blue” title comes in to play.  It opens with a nice bit of haze, then enter a light bit of female vocals to hold the song together.  Beneath all that, the guitars tie in a bit of melancholy, offering listeners a superb track they can play over and over again.  Go on, press play. And again.

Grooms – Prom

Rating: ★★★★☆

Two years ago, Rejoicer, came out, putting Grooms on the map, at least for a little bit.  In those two years, the group has really put in their time figuring out their style, and it’s going to pay huge dividends in 2011.  Prom is a record full of tracks tied together cohesively, yet each track is completely able to stand alone as an undeniable hit.

“Tiger Trees” opens with sampled drum beats and a repetitive guitar, sort of like an ambient opener for a Mogwai song, but moments later, cymbals crash, noise washes in, and you’re stuck in the melody bubbling beneath the track.  Here you’ll be intrigued by Grooms‘ ability to slither in and out of discordant atmospherics and melodious washes of noise.  Beauty in noise seems to be a huge theme from the get go as you enter into “Prom.”  It’s a youthful discussion lyrically, moving from the song’s title to discussion of the Smiths in one’s bedroom, but you’ll find yourself wrapped up in the line “I wanna be friends with you.”

Perhaps it’s just me, but while people can probably throw around a Sonic Youth reference here and there, due entirely to the loud quiet loud noise element, I occasionally hear later 90s indie rock heroes such as Built to Spill.  “Expression Of” has that same meandering quality that the best BoS tracks had, and vocally, you can definitely hear a little Doug Martsch channeling.  Part of the allure of Prom is that the band seemingly drop references to various bands throughout, such as the nod to Deerhunter in “Skating With a Girl,” but Grooms owns the sound; they make it entirely their own, wrapping it up in a unique blend of quieting melodies juxtaposed with distortion and feedback.

If you wanted to nit-pick here, perhaps you could call for a bit of a more polished production value, as some tracks tend to rattle perhaps too much for their own good. That being said, that’s one of the interesting qualities here, as the band clearly is marking their own territory within the realms of their forefathers. “Into the Arms,” comes late into the album, and this is perhaps the most Thurston Moore-ish song, even down to the lyrics, but the vocal delivery takes on a character of it’s own, allowing you to focus on the song’s construction, made more remarkable by the fact that the bass line seems to live just beneath the surface of the song, letting the cutting guitar chords roam free.

Sure, there’s definitely some landmark references throughout Prom, but everything has roots in something nowadays.  Grooms succeeds in their endeavors because you clearly see their dedication to crafting their own space within the confines of noisy indie rock.  It’s a place you’ll need to delve into, traveling with the band from start to finish on this most excellent journey, leaving you feeling fulfilled and rewarded for giving this record the deserved time.

New Track from Pepper Rabbit

Almost less than a year after their last release, it seems that Pepper Rabbit are returning again with a brand new record, Red Velvet Snow Ball.  Said album will be released on August 9th via Kanine Records, and if it sounds at all like this debut track, it’s going to be pretty special.  I love the way the song opens with this sort of bouncy beat, contrasted by some technological warfare on the sound itself.  But, once they get going, it’s hard not to see this as anything as blissful pop music, of the best sort.  For a duo, this band sure knows how to flesh out their own sound, which you’ll definitely be aware of when you listen to this on repeat for the next several hours.

New Song from Grooms

One of the great things about SXSW is that it introduces you to bands you’ve never heard of, and often don’t remember days afterward, but then when you come across a new tune you get really excited, remembering all the promise the band showed in their brief set.  Such is the case of Grooms, having come across them last year at SXSW.  Having been quiet since the release of their last album, Rejoicer, the group has now lined up the release of Prom, set to come out July 12th via Kanine Records.  This first track comes off with this real muddy feel to it, filled with noise throughout, seemingly about to crash down up the listener.  All the while the vocals have this thoughtful quality, as if the lyrics are an observation of the music.  It all makes for a listen that will have you pushing repeat until the button breaks.

New Song from Xray Eyeballs

A few months back we brought you news of Xray Eyeballs, a project featuring OJ from Golden Triangle, but now there’s a new track out there, thanks to MOKB, just before the band’s release of their record Not Nothing, which will hit stores net week via Kanine Records. Listening to this track, I definitely am digging the way it trudges along, slowly building towards the eventual musical release.  It’s a less immediate track than others we’ve heard, giving us the impression that Not Nothing will definitely have all sorts of things to offer its listeners.  Just you wait and see.

New Music from Xray Eyeballs

Everyone seems to have their favorite style of punk or new wave or garage or whatever, but Brooklyn’s Xray Eyeballs seem to have all of that in mind when crafting their songs, that and a touch of down-trodden temperament.  The songs could easily go double time on your turn table and sound like run of the mill garage punk, but in this time, they just sound like your party ran out of beer, and you lost all your money gambling on beer pong.  Luckily, you can add this to the late night soundtrack of your life on April 19th when Kanine Records release the band’s full length, Not Nothing, to the rest of the world.  I’d write more, but I’m sort of bummed from listening to this track, in a good way of course.

New Tunes from Dream Diary

Are you ready for the next big thing folks?  Well, if you haven’t already heard, we’re pretty sure that the next big thing is going to come from Dream Diary, a Brooklyn band with a whole lot of jangle, a touch of British homage, and a dash of twee.  Yep, pretty much sums up exactly what you’re looking for right? Well, the band plan to release their album, You Are the Beat, on February 15th via Kanine Records.  If this single below is any indicator of things to come, we expect more exceptional tunes to be coming our way in the very near future.  Oh, and you can also check out another track over at Spinner.

New Music From Braids

It seems like the music world is really getting behind this new pop band from Montreal Braids.  I have to admit that I was a little reluctant to jump on the hype machine at first, but their sweet tunes have turned the tide on me.  Below you can find the song “Plath Heart” that put me on the Braids team.  The track will appear on the band’s upcoming debut LP Native Speaker due out January 18th on Kanine Records.
