LS_ToddEdwards2It’s always great to live in a city where the artistic or musical vision of is celebrated, and more so, that it continues to survive.  So, with that in mind, we’re giving out a pair of tickets to celebrate the 11th Anniversary of Learning Secrets…the party-throwing, dance aficionados of our fair city.  Like they always do, they’re throwing a huge shindig with legendary Todd Edwards DJing.  You might know Todd from his work with little known acts like Daft Punk; this is a dance party you don’t want to miss. It’s being held at Kingdom, and you can win tickets by leaving a comment with your favorite beverage (and an email). I’ll pick the winner when the contest closes at 11:59 PM Thursday. Good luck!

AMBA 2014 Photo BannerIt was a great event. We were proud to be a part of it.

I have a list of winners and so many photos. Orthy sounded great, buoyed by Ian and Jeramy’s win for best DJs as Learning Secrets. Shivery Shakes ripped after their win for “Sidewalk Talk”. Jess was charming and haunting as ever, congrats. A Giant Dog stole the show with their set, while Mirror Travel may have given some voters buyer’s remorse. Magna Carda is hip-hop in Austin; go see them.

Contest: Ticket Giveaway for Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsytem

1149650_600371506701037_1279571646_oAlright all you dance-ateria types, we’ve got a great deal for you courtesy of our friends at Learning Secrets.  They’re putting on an incredible dance party this Saturday night at Kingdom featuring Pat Mahoney as Museum of Love; he’s one of the founding members of LCD Soundsytem.  You can definitely hear how the beats were constructed for the old group, though Mahoney has a different spin on the vocal take than James Murphy (deeper).  Plus, not only do you get to hear Mahoney and his friends throw down, but the boys in Learning Secrets will be opening up the night too, taking on a two hour set starting at 10.  Tickets are $15 HERE, or you can pay $20 at the door.  Your best option is to leave us a comment telling us why you deserve to go to this; it’s that simple. Learning SecretsYeah, we were treated to some sweet jams. I went to eleven when Simian Mobile Disco‘s “Hustler” filled my ears. And thanks for reminding me how great Hot Chip sounds at club volume.

Learning Secrets turned ten years old. You should read the interview if you missed it, it explains things pretty good. Since so many friends were going to be in attendance, I had to bring the camera and a flash. That is right, I got all photo-tech on the people. We had bloggers, photogs, Transmissioners, DELOREAN, Until the Ribbon Breaks and most importantly plenty of people to dance.

Given that the guys behind Learning Secrets, Jeramy Neugent and Ian Orth, are in one of our local favorite bands, Orthy, we see these gents on a regular basis DJing to fill the pre and post-show earspace. Show Review: Snowden @ Red7 (6/7)

Six years ago, that was the last time I saw this band. Snowden is back after checking out for little bit with Jordan bringing along new people for the live setting, tightening the belt to a three piece. The show had a reunion feeling to it; fans listening to the jams flowing for the Learning Secrets‘ wheels of steel were trying to one up each other on stories how Anti-Anti helped them through a tough time or how it was a soundtrack to an epic road trip. Some had seen the band before, some hadn’t. It was a family and friends crowd at Red7 because of the long gap between albums and Jordan’s recent move to Austin.

Insanely busy weekend.

It has been six years since I saw Snowden at SXSW play tracks off of the excellent Anti-Anti album with the woxy.com people at Emo’s Annex tent during a day party. I guess that South-By was one of the first to really flip things upside down, making the day parties how you discover music. Jordan Jeffares finally brings some sound back to Austin to play Red7 tonight with Learning Secrets along for the preshow lounging. Come dance and then gaze.

Show Review: !!! @ The Mohawk (5/25)

Dance party…

The rain, ever looming, ever threatening avoided unleashing a drenching flood on The Mohawk last Saturday. To make up for it, !!! front man Nic Offer did his best work to make it rain, rain sweat. Twerk. Put it in. There was flailing and gyrating and a few trips into the crowd to spread the love. Meanwhile, the stage was full of music to back him as the dance punk disco pros put down the thick funk at the perfect BPM.

Shockwave Riderz opened with Learning Secrets DJ sets filling the gaps with the hits you should know. Pics and a few more words after the break…

Show Review: Tanlines @ Red7 (8/30)

Last week featured back to back nights at Red7, outside to inside. Wild Nothing was fantastic. I had relatively light expectations for Tanlines. When I found out it had sold out, even given the smaller capacity of the inside venue, I was quite surprised. I think the band was, too.

Tanlines is Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm. They throw down calypso-electro dance jams. They asked Love Inks to open. Learning Secrets spun between sets.
