Babe Rainbow – The Organic Band

Rating: ★★★★☆

Turn your gaze up. The naked stars are out. The boombox is cranked to 11, salty air on the fresh breeze, and cool sand squeezes between your toes. You enjoy friendly conversation at length and share some laughs. It is “Smile Time”…so much so that your jaws hurt. Find the cooler covered in wet sand and grab some cold beers. Time to wax up the Hobie longboard for tomorrow A.M.’s rally, and gather ’round a warm fire dug into the sand. After a long sunny Saturday in the surf, that sounds epic to me. Now picture this vibe in album form. That is the newest effort from Babe Rainbow, The Organic Band, wrapped in a tight wetsuit. It is Saturday Night.

Woods Are Back Already

woodPerhaps it’s a bit early to look at Levitation Fest, with that other big festival right around the corner, but one thing is for sure, Woods will be high on my list of bands to see. They always seem to be at work on something, and this time around they’re turning their psychedelic Cali pop into something a tad bit different. There’s horns and jamming moments, which have been present here and there in the past, but this time around they’ve stripped away some of the pop sensibility in favor of just experimental psych jams. City Sun Eater in the River of Light is their new effort, and it will be interesting to see how this all comes to head on what you can assume will be a cohesive collection of beautiful tracks; it comes out at the beginning of April.

More New DIIV Music

DIIV

If anyone is judging by soundcloud plays, and you shouldn’t, then this new DIIV record already has a lot of excitement behind, having reached over 10K streams in less than 24 hours. Personally, I was excited by their newer songs at this past Levitation Fest…more so than I was by their earlier work. This new track definitely has my interest piqued further, using a lot of great guitar work to fill out the space behind Cole’s voice. For my two cents, it’s one of the strongest things they’ve done; it’s got a really dark feeling to it, furthered by the way the vocals calmly hang in the air. Their new album, Is the Is Are Now will be released by Captured Tracks on February 5th.

ATH @ Austin Psych Fest’s Levitation 2015

Time to reflect on Levitation 2015. I liked the name change away from Austin Psych Fest when it was announced as there are several bands that that may meander towards that genre, fans of the genre may love, but just aren’t “Psych” bands. I hope they continue to expand the diversity of the lineup. With that, let’s talk about this year and then you can gander a whole mess of photos taken at the fest.
