Bats & Mice Return!

If the band name Bats & Mice doesn’t immediately ring a bell, I’m not sure anyone (including the band) would blame you as they’ve dormant for going on 12+ years. What was a promising career, with the high point being their last EP Back in Bat from 2010, halted shortly after with the band pausing all creative output to focus on life and other projects. Luckily for all of us fans, the Chapel Hill lads got back together late last year, made some tunes together again, and have a full album of material ready for release later this year. Of course an album announcement wouldn’t be fit without some new tunes to check out, so treat your ear holes to this new track “Buried Just Beyond.” This was well worth the wait.

The new album from Bats & Mice, PS: Seriously, is due out on May 31st via Lovitt Records.

Premiere: Committee(s) Read (Final) Flares

Committee(s) have been working for a few years now, with Sean Husick organizing the group’s debut around various other projects by the members. What began as an after-show conversation between friends has completely evolved into the band’s first full-length, (Final) Flares. Members of the band have performed in acts such as Milemarker, Bats & Mice, as well as Sleepytime Trio, so it would suffice to say that noise and certain indie rock tendencies would be present. That said, the band take that history and spin it into this spinning piece of calming shoegaze. Guitar chords ring in the distance, but there’s this subtle harmony that works throughout the song’s six minutes. Boiled down, it’s a pop song, informed by the history of its members who’ve been working playing music longer than most of us have been reading about it (online, at least), crafting a style wholly their own at the moment. Their debut LP will be released by Lovitt Records on May 18th.

Check the Video Premiere of Light Beams Desiring Creatures

Not too long ago, I was raving about the work of Light Beams, and they’re back with a new hit single to go feature on their split with Ian Svenonious new solo project, Escapism. I love the flash video work done on this new track; it seems to step right in long with the groove-laden track, pulsing as the vocals are released. I’m continuously impressed by the band’s minimalism, working with synth loops, bass and drums; it also encapsulates an evolving sound for those familiar with the band’s hometown of Washington DC (and singer Moyer’s other band, Puff Pieces). The split 7″ with Svenonious will be released on September 22nd via Lovitt Records…you can grab yourself a copy right HERE.

Puff Pieces – Bland in DC

puffpiecesRating: ★★★½☆

Puff Pieces are anything but what their band name might lead you to believe. They’ve compiled 11 songs for their latest release, Bland in DC, with each providing listeners with a message. You needn’t look further than some of the titles like “March of the Idiots” or “Money” to see where they take aim. But, in order for the record and the message to completely endear itself to the audience, the band has to supply the musicality to make it last…and boy do they.

“Wanna No” kicks off the album in a jittery, proto-punk fashion while the vocals are drawn out across the tune, seemingly working against the heart of the track. Emphasis is given by backing vocals sporadically shouted from the distance. Staying long isn’t the band’s cup of tea on Bland in DC, as they bounce right into the next track, and so on and so forth until the end. At times, it almost feels like you’re falling off the tracks or racing towards the finish line, such as on tracks like “Wondrous Flowers;” it’s remarkable how quickly and flawlessly the rhythm section moves throughout.

Yet while the group definitely has a signature sound they’re pushing, they also open up the chords for a more traditional approach on tracks like “Pointless People,” which again takes on a furious pace that would likely have normal humans rushing to catch their breath.

I think my favorite track is “Goths and Vandals;” there seems to be a dark sense of humor that lurks in the track, if not a slight bit of sarcasm. My favorite lyric comes via “Y” where the band proclaims “the future’s like a big locked door.”

All in all, I found the record really enjoyable, but I can see detractors proclaiming that it’s too one-note. On the surface, sure, but those of you looking for energetic, yet artful, punk with a message will find a happy home with Puff Pieces.

Really Liking Puff Pieces

puffLately there’s been a rush of all these people looking back on the old emo sounds, but what’s interesting is that that actually makes the work of a band like Puff Pieces seem utterly refreshing, even though their sound might hint at days that are even further back. It’s a steadying bit of jittery punk, mixing great bass work with a stabbing guitar chord that doesn’t move much throughout the track. Still, I like the feeling of it all, like a grittier version of Talking Heads, maybe. Anyways, they’re releasing their album, Bland in DC on April 1st via Lovitt Records.

Proto Punk from Puff Pieces

puffOff kilter chords matched with a propulsive rhythm section capture your ear almost immediately on this new tune from Puff Pieces. The vocals almost set the whole song off the rails, seeming to work in an odd way against the song’s structure. But, soon the song’s over, and you’re left thinking “what the fuck was that,” and “was it as good as I thought?” It was my friends, which is why the group’s new album, Bland in DC should be on your radar, not only for it’s musicality, but also for the political bent it’s proposing in both album and song titles; it’s out via Lovitt Records on March 25th.

New Music from Auxes (sort of)

auxI used to jam to Milemarker quite a bit back in the day, so it’s good to see Dave Laney writing new tunes, though he’s been working on his Auxes project for some time.  I dig the band’s newest single; it’s got a blend of post-rock surrounded by some more melodic guitar playing.  Lacey’s vocals still have a slightly harsh sound, but it’s not an off-putting one, just rather a touch that gives an extra punch to the band. Their latest album Boys in My Head is getting a release stateside via Lovitt Records, so whether you’ve heard it or not, it’s a jam for you to enjoy this afternoon.

Have You Listened to Wedding Dress

wedBeen posting a lot of that rock and roll stuff lately, so it’s nice to have something light-hearted that I think you will all enjoy.  The band’s name is Wedding Dress, and it began as a side-project for Erin Elders, while he had some downtime from his other group, Maps & Atlases. There’s still some quirky song structures in place here, which makes sense considering Elders’ past, but just indulge yourself in some of the melodies that are lurking elsewhere in the song. You can see for yourself when the group releases Desperate Glow on November 18th via Lovitt Records.

Puff Pieces Offer Up New Single

puffpiecesI feel like yesterday I sort of went in one-direction, musically.  But, today I aim to mix it up a bit, so this little number offers up a little bit of art-rock from Puff Pieces.  The song’s short, with this steady stabbing  bounce that propels the song forward.  There’s little yelps accenting the vocals every step of the way, making things emphatic, yet fun at the same time.  The three piece is releasing a brand new 7″ titled  4 Songs next week via Lovitt Records; it’s mean to hold us over a little bit while we wait for a full-length to be recorded.
