Last Week’s Jams (4.17 – 4.20)

If there is one song I want you to listen to it has to be the absolute smash hit from Maine’s Big Blood; I think I’ve listened to that track 1000 times since I’ve heard it, if not more. Of course, there’s other great tunes to enjoy as well, like that pop ditty from Tough Age, or Rama Lama’s new signing, Echo Ladies. Plus, Austin held its own again with new stuff from Dress Warm and RF Shannon. And, if you’re looking for something with some legs, there’s at least a handful of tunes stretching beyond the 4 minute mark, so indulge as you must.

Low Praise Share Time is Calling

I love the way that the guitars on this new Low Praise track kind of crawl right into the picture, sort of prowling for listeners. Suddenly the sticks hit and the drums provide this insatiable rhythm that gets your body right into the groove. Once the vocals join the rest of the party, they seem like they’re trying to keep up, working with a bit of a syllabic curl not unlike many of their post-punk brethren. Where I got hooked was the anti-chorus that hits at the 1:20 mark; it’s a place where others would sell me this boisterous hook that I’d gobble up with joy. That’s the easy way out, which Low Praise didn’t offer me immediately, so I appreciate their willingness to go beyond the genre’s formulaic nature. Take a risk with me and grab a copy of Dressing, which drops on May 19th.

Last Week’s Jams (3.27 – 3.31)

For some reason I felt like we were nursing a SXSW hangover, just a week later than normal. But, in all that, still found tons of great tunes to write about and share. Good to see personal faves like Lachlan Denton and Greg Mendez popping up (with that Greg tune getting tons of love), plus some videos from the likes of Low Praise and 7ebra gave us a chance to revisit some singles we’d been keeping an eye on. Also, some local love for Troller and Houston’s Alien Eyelid, so trying to keep it Texas ya’ll. Stream on!

Low Praise Share Forget That Its Summer

It only took me a few seconds to latch onto this new track from Oakland’s Low Praise; I love the jagged guitar vibe that cuts through this one, and that bob-and-weave bass line doesn’t hurt one single bit. Once the song takes off after the maneuvering mantra, the track begins to really unfold into this post-punk bit of trance; I definitely hear some Wire tendencies in the way the vocals get delivered. But, for all the nods to their forefathers, the group also are willing to bang out some heavy grooves, which you get a glimpse of when they deliver their pseudo-chorus, crashing through the speakers as opposed to bobbing up and down. If you dig on it, the group are releasing Dressing on May 19th!
